Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream Gripes
I made a general post about my disappointment with TLLTD, but I have a few more specific complaints.
Parent/Child relationships
Aside from not being able to actually experience the child growing up--the parent and child relationship are pretty much the same as a "close friends" or "roomate" kind of relationship. The way that the parents interact with their kid(s) is the same as any other Mii, and it's really weird to me. One of my Miis, Zucas, lives with her parents and the event "what roomate gives off the most ______?" showed up. And it used that EXACT WORDING, "roomate." Like, Zucas, you are living with your mom and dad, and you're calling them roommates?? I feel like the developers didn't bother to make any of the family relationships specifically unique to relatives. They just kinda keep it the same as any other Mii and it's pretty disappointing.
It's absolutely BAFFLING to me that there are no other pre-made house exteriors. It's only the base one and then you can customize. But the custom houses don't even look good either! The textures are just flat on the object. If the exterior house decoration was like in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, I'd be fine with that. No different house shapes or anything was really a bummer to see.
Not to be The Woker but, come on Nintendo. No wheelchairs, crutches, hijabs, prosthetics... I mean, adding pronouns already got them hounded from online grifters so I GUESS I can get why they didn't, but it still sucks.
I love making my Miis fall in love with each other and making my headcanons come true, but the romance feels very unromantic. Now, I'm not asking Miis to break the bed, but your Miis can't even hug other Miis. Like, if a little quirk was hug when greeting, that would add SO MUCH characterization. I keep thinking of this tweet when it comes to Miis kissing:
HOW CUTE WOULD THAT BE???? A part of me wants to say it's because of homophobia that this isn't in the game. I mean, people are pissed about there even being DATING OPTIONS FOR QUEER PEOPLE, imagine if you could make your gay little Miis kiss. They'd claim some crap like "brainwashing the kids" or exposing them to p*rn in some way... Right-wing grifters suck the fun out of EVERYTHING, I SWEAR. And the closest thing we get to romantic physical affection in the game is the one cutscene where your Mii tries to hold their crushes hand. Everytime that cutscene comes up, it pisses me off. I know how it's gonna end, I know they're not gonna even HOLD HANDS. The people yearn for romance in there cozy games. It would add so much to the relationships between Miis to add physical affection, romantic AND platonic.
Now, cozy games don't necessarily have an end goal, but I constitute the end of a cozy game when the credits roll. And when I unlocked the space tour, I was SHOCKED when the credits rolled. I was thinking "this is the end goal of this game? That took me, like, 1-2 weeks to complete? What??" I finished getting stuff from the wishing fountain so quickly that now I don't even really bother to drop off all the warm fuzzies. It's really lackluster.
I fucking LOVE the little quirks, however, there isn't NEARLY enough of them. I got so bored after I got all of them... I was sad that there wasn't more, because now they just feel repetitive... I hate to sound like an ungrateful fan, but if I'm dropping 60 dollars on a game, I'm expecting 60 dollars worth of content.
I feel like this game was made to have DLC content. I can just SMELL the DLC packs of little quirks that come out in the future. And the worst part about it, is that they are almost GUARANTEED to drop maybe one or two for both Switch 1 and Switch 2, but then they're gonna only release updates for the Switch 2 edition. Also, I'm surprised that this game didn't release with a Nintendo Switch 2 addition. Not only would they have made even more bank, but the consumers would be happier because they have a bunch of more content. But of course, big company sells a product that is NOT AT ALL worth how much it's being sold for.... Bleh.
Maybe I'm just incredibly unemployed, but all the little friendship or romantic events are just incredibly repetitive ATP--even with the lingo! It's the same "fill in the blank" that gets boring.
"Do you feel like talking about.... *close up* drugs?"
"If someone came up to you and was like 'you wanna do drug?' would you say yes?"
"Yes! I'm always down for drugs."
LIKE, THERE ARE ONLY SO MANY TIMES WHERE YOU CAN MAKE YOUR MIIS TALK ABOUT ANAL BEADS UNTIL YOU GET BORED.
Truely, your vote is in your dollar, or however that saying goes. I wish I didn't buy it so quickly, but also--despite all my complaints--I'm still having fun with this game. I get weirdly detailed with the album covers on the vinyls and I love making Jonathan Sims and Martin Blackwood have a baby. But do I think it was a waste of money? Yes. Is it still pretty fun? Yeah, that too! I just hope that Nintendo listens to its fans.
I might make a video about it.... I dunno.
