Every now and again someone asks me what it is I actually do day-to-day as a #scientist. I thought I'd share a (very small) sample. The weird thing you're seeing in these photos is a 96-well plate designed for #pcr. PCR, in its simplest form, is a way for us to pick a region of DNA, and make lots of copies of it so that we can examine it further. The liquid you can see there amounts to 25 microlitres - that's 200 times smaller than a teaspoon, about the size of a drop of water. I have to mix about 5 (clear) reagents to get to this stage, and not cross contaminate any of the samples. Which sample was I up to again? #funtimes #immunology #research #biology #medicalresearch #phd #DNA #academia #rsi
