I was wondering if you're studying to be a midwife do you have to learn about/ how to carry out abortions? I really want become a midwife but I don't think I can morally put myself through something like that.
Nope! Midwives are not required to perform abortions, and CPMs are not trained on how to do them. If that’s not something you’re comfortable with, it’s not something you have to participate in.

What it’s like to be slut-shamed when buying birth control
Even when pharmacists do let people access contraception, whether emergency contraception or condoms or prescription birth control pills, the process isn’t always free of judgment. In a series of recent online discussions, people across the country have begun to share stories of the stigma they’ve experienced. As many have pointed out, this can be especially damaging to teens.
DO YOU SEE THIS? PHARMACY EMPLOYEES IN THE U.S. ARE NOT LEGALLY ALLOWED TO DO THIS. THAT GOES FOR THE PEOPLE AT THE FRONT AS WELL AS PEOPLE IN WHITE COATS BEHIND THE CAGE.
If an employee in a pharmacy makes a snide comment - Front store workers, pharmacists, or Pharmacy Techs give you shit? Gently (Or not so gently) remind them that the waiver they signed upon being hired legally binds them from commenting on your purchase, as it is a violation of privacy laws. Doing so is grounds for INSTANT termination and hefty fines.
Pharmacy workers (white coats) are legally obligated to ASK if you need an explanation of how medication works and any side effects, any medication conflicts etc. If you decline, THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED AT ALL TO MAKE SNIDE REMARKS OR FARTHER COMMENT ON YOUR PURCHASE. FRONT STORE EMPLOYEES CAN NOT AT ALL COMMENT IN ANY WAY, IN ANY STORE WITH A PHARMACY IN IT.
Know your rights. If this shit happens? Call them the fuck out and ask to speak to a manager. Get worked up. Cause a scene. Threaten a Lawsuit. If you see this happening to someone else, and they seem to be struggling, speak up for them.
As a Pharmacy worker, you bet your ass I’ll protect you and your privacy. IT’S MY JOB.
HIPAA is no joke. When making comments about your purchases to you, they are actually making it possible for other people to become aware of your medical needs, which is a high crime in the medical field. Don’t even say anything about a waiver, etc, I’ve found that if you don’t use specific terminology with people like this that they will try to bluff.
Outright state “That’s a HIPAA violation” in response to their comment. No more or less than that– they’ll shut up VERY quickly, and you still have the right to actually call the district manager of whatever company it is and make them aware of a HIPAA violation.
HIPAA is taken extremely seriously. Extremely. Violating HIPAA is grounds for immediate termination. In hospitals, if you walk away from your computer, even if it’s in a restricted area where only nurses and doctors can see, while leaving patient information up on the screen, it’s a HIPAA violation.

What happens when you take the abortion pill?
Someone asked us:
What is the effects of the abortion pill like? How much blood is there supposed to be? How much does it hurt? How long does it last?
Here’s what it’s like to take the abortion pill.
The abortion pill (AKA medication abortion) is really a two-part process — not just one pill. First, you take a pill called mifepristone. Often, this step happens at the health center or at your doctor’s office, but in some cases they may give you instructions for taking it at home. After the first pill, you may feel a little nauseated or start bleeding, but most likely you won’t feel anything. Your doctor or nurse will give you antibiotics to take to prevent infection.
Next, you’ll take a second medicine, called misoprostol, up to 48 hours after you take the first pill. You’ll want to be somewhere comfy for this, and make sure you have some over-the-counter pain relievers and pads, tampons, or a menstrual cup on deck, because this second medicine causes cramping and bleeding. Usually, the cramping and bleeding starts 1-4 hours after taking the misoprostol.
Exactly how much bleeding you’ll experience is hard to say, but lots of people compare it to having a really heavy, crampy period. It’s normal to see some large blood clots (up to the size of a lemon) or clumps of tissue when this part of your abortion is happening.
The cramping and bleeding can last for 4-5 hours, but it may take longer. You may have a little cramping on and off for the next couple of days, but overall you should be good to go back to most of your regularly scheduled life the next day if you feel up to it.
At your appointment, your doctor or nurse will talk with you about following up in the weeks after you take the abortion pill.

You’re too old to have kids.” Clearly that is not the case, but it did give us a good laugh. A lot of people told us we were crazy for starting over but I’m so glad we did. Having a child in my late thirties has made me appreciate things so much more. Especially when the epidural failed and I got to feel what childbirth really is like. Wow, what an experience. Also, successfully breastfeeding my third child because I’m not hung up on stigmas. A Change of Plans
Hello all!
This last few months has brought a lot of changes. I’m not even quite sure where to begin.
One of the changes that brought about all of the crazy was that my preceptor that I loved dearly decided to move out of state to practice midwifery with a former colleague of hers. This left me without a preceptor to finish my apprenticeship, and kind of scrambling. I miss her a ton, but I know she’s super happy, so that helps.
Another change that occured, as a result of the first change, (and the insane practice rules and regulations in my state) was that I decided no longer to pursue my midwifery certification through NARM or licensure through my state. I have decided instead to go back to nursing school, and will graduate with my BSN in July of 2020. It was just getting to be too easy to lose a midwifery license to our department of health, that has said on record that it hopes to eradicate homebirth midwifery. I can’t adequately care for and fight for my clients’ rights if I’m struggling at a basic level just to stay licensed.
I’m honestly not sure if I will pursue midwifery as a CNM when I finish my BSN. I am certainly planning further education, but I will have to see where life takes me. I love midwifery so much, but it’s a really tough path. I’m not sure if CNM work in a hospital would be good for my heart, and the last three years have proven that being on call 24/7 is not compatible with all of my health issues and the family I want for myself someday.
I don’t know yet where this life of mine is taking me, but for now, my birth work journey has come to a stop, and my nursing journey is just beginning. I’m excited, nervous, cautious, mournful. I will never forget all of the beautiful people I’ve worked with, and the way midwifery has changed me, on a fundamental level.

As long as you advocate for your patients it won’t matter the title you have. Do you best and your patients will love you.

all i have to say on breastfeeding is that the fact that it is even slightly controversial is just one of the many symptoms of a lecherous, sex-obsessed society. it’s an insult to the dignity of women.
How dare society be concerned about public decency?!

Nobody is stopping you from breastfeeding in private.
But in public, where it could be seen by children, trauma-stricken war veterans, or the elderly?
There is a case to be made that they should be able to go about their lawful business without being exposed to the areolas of strange women with nefarious agendas.

Life update
Hey guys!! I really didn’t mean to abandon you all there for a sec. Things have just been crazy around here.
For one, my physical health has been up and down these last few months, making it harder to be a consistently good student. I’m still attending births and will actually be heading back to the birth center I was at before in May to finish up my numbers, but I slowed down for a minute to take care of myself.
The other stuff I’ve been working through has all been emotional. For those of you who have followed me for a while, you know that I’ve had several clients/friends experiences losses now, including late-full term stillbirths. These are people I’ve been very close to during their pregnancies, and while I would never claim to have experienced the pain of these losses the way these parents have, I have been affected in my own way. The emotions around these events have made it difficult to stay mentally present during other births when things begin to creep out of the realm of normal, so I’ve sought out counseling to help me release some of the fear that’s developed around all of this.
I have several birth stories now to write through, and plan to do so soon, so stay tuned!

Breastfeeding being a contraceptive method makes sense and we see it in a lot of animals. If you don't bf, your body won't know that you have a child to care for and assumes you are ready for another (we see this with lions for example and it's a big reason why cubs are killed when a new male takes over). If you bf your body will be like "Alright can't take care of both and fight off illnesses and mountain lions better stop one!" It's one of those things that are logical but we never think about
it is extremely interesting. I’ve never heard of breastfeeding as birth control before that post so I’d love to read more into the reasons behind why it works.
This is true. Breastfeeding as birth control, also called lactation amenorrhea method (LAM) is about 98% effective.
HOWEVER!!!!!
There are some very very VERY important rules to follow if you are using this contraception method.
1) Baby can only be fed from the breast/chest. No bottles at all, not even with pumped breast milk. No pacifiers or artificial nipples of any kind whatsoever!
2) Baby must feed from breast on demand, even at night. Baby must eat about every 4 hours at least. If baby starts sleeping through the night, bf is no longer effective as birth control.
3) Breastfeeding as contraception only works when baby is exclusively feeding from the breast. Once baby is introduced to solids (around 6 months), even if you are still breastfeeding, you can become pregnant. At that point you need to find another form of birth control.
4) When your menses return, even if still bf exclusively, you can become pregnant.
