Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Ok, I just finished the final episode and I’m honestly shocked by how well the psychological manipulation worked. Harsh wake up call.
I - like Carol - started feeling hopeful. I trusted the development of a possible connection derived from their previous history and the fact that Zosia changed. I believed Zosia’s individuality was finally peeking through. And then comes the snap back to reality, and I’m just as shocked, pained, and disappointed as Carol is.
It’s brilliant how we get played along with her. No matter how much we know, how aware we think we are, we still cling to that hope - exactly like she does. That belief that this time it’s different.
That helicopter scene broke me. Zosia leaving her behind, then immediately going back to business, full-on hivemind mode, not even giving her a second glimpse, while Carol is clearly devastated… brutal. No pause. No rupture. Just function over feeling. Hard times.
And the frozen eggs detail is interesting because the show doesn’t frame it as a maybe. Zosia calls them “induced frozen stem cells,” says they’re very fragile, but treats the outcome as a certainty if the process is followed correctly. Scientifically, that’s still not how it works - stem cells don’t come straight from unfertilized eggs without creating an embryo-like state - but the point isn’t realism I guess. It’s control. A system that works, provided you submit to it, handle it carefully, don’t rush, don’t deviate.
And that’s exactly the same logic applied to Carol. Trust the process. Be patient. Don’t disrupt the system.
Until you’re left behind, and the system keeps moving without you.
Good luck next season, Carol. 🙂
The 'escapist honeymoon that ends in the illusion shattering' of it all...
still thinking about raban. and how even though carol could do whatever she wanted with wycaro now and face zero backlash, she hasn’t retconned anything. she’s found a way for the story to move forward and bring raban with it, changed but not undone. especially with zosia being a representation of raban, i feel like this is telegraphing how the ‘cure’ will function. not a reversal, but separating the hive and moving forward, everyone having been changed by it. nothing is going to be “set right” as carol said but things will be set differently and the challenge will be navigating the consequences of that
Once again the blue vs. yellow/orange contrast goes hard.
Blue, the color of peace/obedience that is associated with the hivemind.
Carol wore yellow in 1.01 because she stood out (while Helen wore green, the color of neutrality).
When Manousos begins his journey he has his yellow car and scarf with him.
Yellow, the color of resistance and individuality.
The moment he ditches that car and tries to cross the Gap on his own? He gets injured.
So blue-ish.
A loss of his autonomy. He needs the hive's help, after all.
Carol tries to have her moments of rebellion:
But it doesn't last for long.
She cracks. Humans aren't build for that level of isolation. More than a month completely alone.
In this episode, both heroes that oppose the hivemind were defeated and salvation seemed more distant than ever.
They both get saved by the blue: the helicopter, Zosia's car.
But here's the crux.
This is the first (other than that time with Diabate in 1.02 and while she was hospitalized ofc) that Zosia is not wearing blue. At all.
i love how the manual labour carol puts into loving helen (digging her grave by hand, covering it with stone tiles, etc.) contrasts so starkly with the mechanized convenience that the hivemind (which supposedly adores her) offers
carol & manuosos are soulmates they need to meet NOW before i kms

Hacks Episode 4.10 Thoughts
Alright, so I’m mostly keeping this to the episode-specific post, rather than taking up the entire season bc I want to be able to watch the season start to finish to really think about it as a cohesive whole.
