Hi! What do you think about the "if you can picture yourself doing something else than medicine, then you are in the wrong field" mentality? Do you think that all physician should view the field of medicine as their one and only calling?
I don’t like that mentality! I can definitely picture myself doing other things than medicine, because I have a life outside of medicine and other things I enjoy. I love art and music, and I’m sure I would have also been happy going down one of those routes. I love reading, and often think how lovely it would be to run a bookshop and cafe.
Plus, medicine is a very long and tiring path, so I think it’s pretty normal to think ‘ugh if I’d done this other career I wouldn’t have to be revising right now’.
I hate the mentality that medicine is some higher calling, and that doctors are basically martyrs who sacrifice their lives to medicine - ew. As the years go by the more I realise medicine is a job, and that the whole ‘passion and sacrifice’ mentality is what leads to doctors being expected to work insane hours and have basically no life outside of work, which I don’t think is right. Doctors are people and should be well-rounded, and should also be properly awake and not burned-out when seeing patients. I’m very, very glad that the UK has changed its attitude on medicine hours and that doctors, even juniors, can lead somewhat normal lives now. I honestly wouldn’t do it if not, because I value other things in my life than just medicine.
But even so, medicine can be gruelling and I’m even having some doubts at the moment now I’m getting near to the start day - especially seeing how much unpaid overtime the juniors on gastro do, and the strain the NHS is under. So yeah there’s days where I wonder what life would be like if I chose something more chilled and glamorous. But at the same time, I’m happy I’ve picked medicine and I’m excited to start. So basically I’m not 100% sure medicine is the best career (it’s hard to know when you haven’t really experienced anything else!), but that doesn’t mean I’ll be a bad doctor! x
13 May 2019 | It’s almost summer. I have absolutely loved my courses this semester, but I will definitely be happy when this week is finished. I just submitted my final paper for my seminar course and now I’m on to studying for my church history exam. After that, all that remains is my Greek final and then I can put all my time into reading the towering pile of *other* books I’ve accumulated over the past few weeks.
Maybe some of you are in a place where you need to hear these things. Trust me, it does turn out okay. 💛

23•04•19,
i found a really peaceful study space in the university library that overlooks the harbour (as you can see above).
imagine owning an independent bookstore with a cafe and bakery with a cat that sleeps on the windowsills and people like to pet her while they browse the shelves
