"in my defense, they didn't have a smaller teddy bear in stock. hope you have some space in your bedroom" - Kitty
The white screen on Meister's glasses displayed floating red and pink hearts that seemed to match the blush on his cheeks. "Kitty! That's so sweet of you. I'll cherish it always. But first," he produced a book from behind his back, "I have something for you, as well."
It was a first-edition copy of the first book in the Nancy Drew series, The Secret of the Old Clock. He had purchased it for Kitty at an auction months before, and even though the book was a valuable collector's item and over ninety years old, it could still be read.

Music Meister chuckled at the womanโs discourteous response.ย โGoodness me,โ he said with a smug little grin,ย โwhat did I do to earn such contempt?โ He was much more used to this kind of banter from Gothamโs insufferable do-gooders, although their retorts were often less vulgar.
โIโm not sure exactly what it is youโre doing, but perhaps, if you let me in on it, we can collaborate? With your unparalleled skills in thievery and my hypnotic abilities, we could make quite a power couple.โ Meisterโs face turned a little red when he realized what heโd just said.ย โI mean, not like...in that sense...like, professionally speaking, of course.โ He could feel some of his confidence deflating now, and in the presence of one of Gothamโs most well-known criminals, no less.
Music Meisterโs eyes widened behind his custom glasses. He almost asked the man if he was sure, even though it was obvious that Meister had his full attention.
โW-well, I have this idea, and itโs a little nebulous right now. But in my debut with the chiropteran crusader, I was almost successful in broadcasting my psychic powers all over the world, using some tech that I was able to upload into a satellite receiver.โ He scratched the back of his neck, feeling the embarrassment of that defeat at the hands of the Bat and bird (no, not that bird, the cute blonde in all black with amazing lung capacity) all over again. He began to pace.
โI need something just as effective, but more discrete. Less conspicuous. Radio signals can only travel so far, and taking over a single city or county is too modest of a start for me. I need to go big if Iโm going to defeat that spandex-wearing rat with wings. And with your brilliant mind, Iโm sure we can think of something.โย
Then he stopped mid-stride with a cheeky little grin. โAnd Iโd be willing to pay top dollar, too. This project is much to clandestine for my usual suppliers.โ
"I might know something that could work, but it would lean more into magi than mechanics.. If that's something you're comfortable dabbling in." Edgar was a master of many things. Technology, Psychiatry, but one that many forgot was the occult. He'd held in his hands artifats that could alter the lens of reality, used psychic amplifiers to overwhelm the greatest minds. This? Was gonna be cake.
The Meister nodded eagerly.ย โYes! I mean, I donโt know all that much about the mystical arts, but I trust you know what youโre doing in that regard.โ
The prospect of a novel avenue by which to extend his own power and influence greatly excited him. Technology may not have been Meisterโs wheelhouse, but perhaps magic would be different. He was willing to do just about anything to remain one step ahead of the Bat--and any of Gothamโs goody-two-shoes, for that matter.
โAnd Iโd be more than happy to learn a thing or two.โ
โOh, youโre too kind.โ Music Meister replied with a cheeky grin, feeling a little more like his old self, even if he didnโt exactly look the part.ย โThat sounds like quite an intense experience for a child to have to endure. I hope everything turned out okay in the end.โ Meister wondered if that encounter made Echoline want to become a criminal herself, but he wasnโt sure if he was on friendly enough terms to ask a personal question like that. At least, not yet.

Music Meister happily nodded when Echoline said that he could eat at the couch. Even eating at a proper dining table seemed like a luxury after either eating alone in his cell or in a disgusting mess hall, sharing the dinner table with other fellowย โpatientsโ at the asylum. But eating on a couch? Well, that was going to be heaven. He ladled out a portion of the impromptu noodle soup for himself and joined his housemate on the couch.ย
โIโm not picky myself,โ he said before slurping his meal a little louder than he had intended,ย โah, sorry about the noise.โ He turned his attention to the television set, which displayed a celebrity chef in a large, impossibly immaculate kitchen.ย
โI actually like cooking and baking shows. They, well, they helped me learn how to make food when I was a kid, so I owe a lot of television chefs my thanks.โ He paused, recalling some of those fonder memories of his childhood.ย โBut Iโm fine with anything so long as itโs not too scary or too loud. Although, maybe we could find a movie to watch? Itโs been so long since Iโve seen one of those.โ

โTo the water Father Finlee walks- Hardly bothered by the ten-pound lock โRound his ankles, every step he takes, Heavenโs angels tremble in his wakeโฆโ
The sound of piano and the sweet medly of an alto mingled tenderly in the Gotham night air. Bouncing, boistrous through the darkened skies. The Narrows were alive, in a way rarely seen by the rest of the city.ย This small little corner where the broken were left behind.
Dancing and revelry painted the walls as she, her voice like a bell, moved among her men and her friends. The rhythm of their feet on the ground, every step shaking in air.

Music Meister tapped his foot impatiently on the worn concrete as he waited for his confidant. Meister was intensely focused on learning more about (and possibly infiltrating) the legendary Court of Owls. To many, the Court was nothing more than an urban legend; a fictitious cabal on which people placed their social and economic insecurities, and their growing fears of surveillance in an age of rapidly developing technology.ย
But Meister was convinced that the organization was real, and the person that he was meeting claimed to know far more about them than she could discuss in a public meeting place. She was unfashionably late, but he continued to wait on a sad little section of sidewalk, just out of sight of one of the few streetlights around, gently prodding a dandelion that had grown through a crack in the pavement with the toe of his shoe.ย
How do rpers do that thing where the font is smaller?
Next one up in my redraw of the BTMAS is literally one of my favorite DC characters of all time. Mr. Freeze. Love the doc so much he needed a full page.
โOh,โ Meister said, somewhat crestfallen. Though he had great technical skill when it came to working with fabrics and textiles, he lacked the technological abilities needed to create most of his own gadgets (he secretly contracted one of LexCorpโs tech companies to make most of his equipment for him).
โCould you maybe...re-install it? Or replace it?โ He was really grasping at straws, but his desire to be helpful outweighed his fear that he would sound like an idiot to a man who would have absolutely no problem pointing that out.
โOr, if you really need the money, maybe I could give you a new job to work on instead.โย
He sat down the soldering iron, eyes meeting Meister with curiosity. He wasn't a moron. Meister was clever, intelligent, and had some rather peculiar tastes. He went toe to toe with the Bat, not just anyone could get away with that. He might not have been a technical genius, or a master mage- but he was a threat. And a threat you made friends with, was an ally in all but name. Working with him could benefit the psychic. Business connections, similar powersets- it was too perfect to dismiss.
"If you have an idea, I'm listening."
Then he stopped mid-stride with a cheeky little grin. โAnd Iโd be willing to pay top dollar, too. This project is much too clandestine for my usual suppliers.โ
โOh, thereโs more than enough here to make a meal from.โ Music Meister replied. During his childhood, he had to learn how to cook relatively young. His parents werenโt exactly the child-rearing type, but, in retrospect, he assumed that they kept him to prop themselves up as successful in their work lives and their home lives. Of course, they were lacking in the latter.ย
While they were out working on sets or making connections in the entertainment industry, little Meister was left home alone to make dinner out of whatever he could find, and he got pretty good at it once he learned the basics of cooking from television shows.
Now that the water was boiling, he added a bouillon cube to the pot. As soon as the broth was ready, he would throw in the ramen on top of that. The veggies were cooked, so he turned off the gas and placed a lid over the pan to keep them warm.
โGlad to be in the company of a fellow tea connoisseur,โ he said as he perused her collection. He settled on ginseng. Then he grabbed a mug and prepared his tea.ย โIโve heard that Mad Hatter is also a big fan of tea, butโฆwell, Iโm not sure if Iโd want to be a guest at one of hisย โtea parties.โโ He returned to the pot to check on the broth.ย โAlthough,โ he added, rubbing his scraggly beard in thought, โit would certainly be interesting to see whoโs the better hypnotist. Who would you place your bets on?โ He turned to Echoline, pointing a wooden spoon at her.ย โAnd you can be honest, you wonโt hurt my feelings.โ

At least, not yet.
Even if he was a better hypnotist than Jervis--at least, in the eyes of his companion--the Meister had his limits. He had no qualms about putting adults in harmโs way while they were under his influence--especially so-called heroes and vigilantes, and hell, even other villains he wasnโt fond of or didnโt care for--but roping children into oneโs schemes, with the threat of real,ย intentional harm and not just pretense for leverage, seemed excessive to him. He hoped that Hatter was only joking at the time, but he really didnโt know enough about the one-brilliant neuroscientist and Lewis Carroll fanatic to be sure.
While his tea was still brewing in the steaming mug, Meister went back to the stove to check on the broth. The cube was fully dissolved and the liquid close enough to boiling that he decided to add the ramen a little prematurely. He was getting too hungry to wait much longer.

Music Meister nodded.ย โOkay, Iโll see what I can find and whip something up for the both of us.โ He still felt that he should pay Echoline back in some way, so making a hot meal was the least he could do.
Meister jumped a little when she patted his shoulder. It had been a while since heโd had physical contact, let alone of a friendly sort. But he quickly relaxed as he watched her ascend the staircase. Then he scoured the fridge, the freezer, and the pantry for ingredients. Among the various food items he found, there were canned corn and beans, bouillon cubes, ramen noodles, and some frozen mixed vegetables. Okay, he thought to himself, I can work with this.ย

Then he grabbed a mug and prepared his tea.ย โIโve heard that Mad Hatter is also a big fan of tea, but...well, Iโm not sure if Iโd want to be a guest at one of hisย โtea parties.โโ He returned to the pot to check on the broth.ย โAlthough,โ he added, rubbing his scraggly beard in thought, โit would certainly be interesting to see whoโs the better hypnotist. Who would you place your bets on?โ He turned to Echoline, pointing a wooden spoon at her.ย โAnd you can be honest, you wonโt hurt my feelings.โ
Happy Christmas Eve everyone!!! A little wip of Music Meister and Black Canary as a treat
I honestly want to play around with some Music Meister headcanons when I have some spare time. He feels like a blank slate which is pretty fun and he's just another pathetic weirdo to add to my blorbo roster

Squatting in an abandoned theater makes Music Meister feel like a certain specter from the Broadway stage, who he based a decent chunk of his roguish identity off of (I think we all know the one). Sometimes, the feeling is almost literal. Walking around such an unloved place with no one else around can sometimes make him feel like a ghostly shell of himself. Like all his vivaciousness is sucked dry by the theater itself, as if it were an entity consuming his zest for life to relive its glory days.
๐ธ - Scent associated with or general smell of the place.
Thereโs a mustiness that hangs in the air of an abandoned theater on a run-down side of town. It used to be a frequent locale for Gothamโs elite, way back when, but now, only skeletons of its previous grandeur remain. Music Meister has tried to keep the damp, smothering scent out of the areas of the building that he inhabits--the only areas that are structurally sound--with scented candles, oils, and incense. Itโs only a temporary respite from the near-constant reminder of decay and dilapidation.ย
