Type spotting & why it's so tricky

Hello, everyone!

If you've been around the MBTI block, you know that typing can be hard, full of guess work, and be downright confusing. Have you noticed that cognitive functions can throw off someone's perception of an overall type depending on which ones they're paired with? Or two types that you'd never think could be confused can make you double-take if they happen to share some functions or are the shadow/mirror image of each other?

For example, I've been noticing that Fe/Si (Extroverted Feeling/Introverted Sensing) can seem a lot like Fi/Se (Introverted Feeling/Extroverted Sensing) in certain ways. Depending on our own type, that can also color how we see the cognitive functions showing up in others because it subconsciously looks familiar/foreign to us, so we're more likely to lean towards or away from certain conclusions more than others. It can make your brain hurt sometimes, but it's fascinating to see the deeper details of how this all works together, isn't it?

I personally believe it's impossible to know for sure 100% what someone else's type is, and unless you're the author who wrote a character with a certain type in mind, typing fictional characters will always be speculation. People can mistype themselves & others for all kinds of reasons:

lack of knowledge

stereotyping

misattribution of a cause

lack of data

personal bias

fictional vs. real

Everyone is unique, humans are complex, and there's always more hiding under the surface than meets the eye. I'll be sharing some resources that I think do an excellent job of explaining these blind spots while also going into the differences of the intorverted/extroverted versions of the cognitive functions: intuition, sensing, feeling, thinking, judging & perceiving.

I love MXTX and talking about what we love/admire/wonder about these complex characters--MBTI is just my vehicle to open that conversation. I've been thinking over the last week about how to approach this blog & how to better format it for talking openly about the possibilities of a typing & how these characters might be operating under the surface, so I might be changing my first few posts while also leaving some open questions for you all & sharing some other resources to help us talk about the cognitive functions & how they work.

(For example, a future post might be: Wei Wuxian: Introverted Sensor or Extroverted Sensor? or Luo Binghe: Introverted Feeler or Extroverted Feeler? I'd then go and find examples for both options & have you guys guess which one you think is more likely)

I'm always open to the possibilities, so let's explore them together! :)

Hello, MXTX fans!

Over the last few days I've been exploring some new possibilities for my SVSSS typings--not only have I been rereading the novel for the first time in a while & updating my notes documents, but after it was brought to my attention that different types could be a better fit for each of them, I've been fascinated with exploring these alternatives & how/why their cognitive functions could be interpreted differently depending on how you see them working together in the stack, which I'd absolutely be happy to go over here. After doing some investigating, I do think I agree with one of the suggested alternatives & will be adjusting my previous posts accordingly :)

I know that these characters mean a lot to many people, and even if they're fictional characters, it's important to many people that they're portrayed accurately. There will always be some debate just due to the complexity of these characters & their many changes throughout the novels, but if you ever feel that one of the typings here is off the mark, I invite you to reach out to me respectfully & with an open mind to discuss your interpretations. I genuinely do love talking about this stuff! Having an open mind will always be more important to me than being "right."

This blog is ultimately for fun & connecting with other MXTX fans to discuss our insights about why these fictional characters are the way they are, but I do believe in the importance of keeping an open mind to re-think a typing because of new insights or information (if people can mistype themselves & not even realize until years later, you can imagine the debate over fictional characters who aren't even real people!)

Everything in typology should be taken with a grain of salt because, at the end of the day, it's a theory & humans are all complex individuals. We all have our own opinions, reasoning & ego biases that will color our interpretation of someone else's personality traits.

The beautiful duality of Shen Yuan is that despite doing what he did in svsss he'd probably call mxtx a shitty or lazy author if he was reading his own story specifically how he died 3 times just to end up with the protagonist at the end of it all he would hate it so much

So I'll be doing the main cast's typings in order, which means that after Shen Qingqui I'll be doing MDZS (and yes, Wei Wuxian!) He's actually been one of my favorites to take notes on and look into, especially because his type was kind of unexpected from what I originally suspected before starting the novel!

Sorry that October has been super busy for me and I haven't had the time to keep up with this blog the way I wanted to, but I should have a lot more time coming up this month. My goal is to post about once a week!

I'll be going through the novels & characters in chronological order:

SVSSS

MDZS

TGCF

I'll be doing my best to cover the basics of their personality types, explaining how they use their cognitive function stack, how they behave when in what's called "grip stress" and what happens when they get stuck in their "loop."

Afterwards, I'll also touch on their potential Enneagram type & how this can affect their character when paired with their particular MBTI type. If you have any questions, always feel free to send me a message!

DISCLAIMER: This blog is simply for fun as a way for us to take a deeper dive into the MXTX characters & pairings we love so much! It's not a platform for debates, stereotypes, or arguments with no intention to understand others.

I firmly believe that no one type is "better" or "worse" than any other--every type has the potential to be healthy/unhealthy, but these are always phases as we learn more and grow towards our true potential. Everyone is an individual, and (believe it or not) there are often far more differences between people of the same type than what our 4 letters stand for!

Responsible for keeping your inner world logically consistent

Helps you set meaningful goals & then reach them

Helps you observe the mind itself & notice patterns within your own psyche

Experiencing/Experiencer

In MBTI, everyone has a four (4) cognitive functions stack:

Jung’s cognitive function “stack” describes the priority or order in which a person uses their cognitive functions, with Primary being the most natural and commonly used and the Inferior being the least-commonly used.

Primary → Most natural (and comfortable) function; the internal “mother tongue”; the one you use without any conscious effort because it just comes to you that naturally

Auxiliary → Supporting function, usually connected with a person's presence in the world & how they appear to others; it might be the first thing people notice about the person, but it's actually assisting the Primary function

Tertiary → Function where individual often takes action steps to improve upon; you're not the best at using this one, but you're proud of yourself when you are! It might show up in how you seek comfort or how you find equilibrium again when your usual way of dealing with things isn't working

Inferior → Activates under extreme stress, generally avoided out of self-protection; works in direct opposition to the Primary & is there to provide balance; no one can use their Inferior Function for very long (or very well) without burning themselves out because it comes so un-naturally to them, but it's important to learn when to use it!

Hello, fellow MXTX fans!

Do you ever wonder what makes the MXTX characters seem so fleshed out, believable & relatable sometimes? What makes Lan Wangji hoard every little thing Wei Wuxian ever gave him, why Luo Binghe can remember even the smallest details about Qing Jing Peak years later without being back once, or why Xie Lian can seem so perceptive but still miss so much of the big picture? What do LWJ & LBH have in common, and why does LBH's type technically never change whether he's black or white lotus?

Do you see parts of yourself in them or the people close to you & wonder why certain people just seem to click despite seeming like opposites?

Do you gush about how the couples seem to balance one another out but can't quite put your finger on WHY their dynamic works the way they do?

Or maybe you think you have a pretty good guess on a character's type but aren't 100% sure if you have it right because WHAT ARE EVEN THE COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS??

Well then, it's my pleasure to meet you! I'm an aspiring MBTI & personality coach working towards my certification after years of studying each type in depth, & I'm here to give you a deeper dive into each of these characters, their relationships, & their growth throughout the novels!

That being said, MBTI is a theory that has any number of variations & exceptions between--and among--each type! It's not meant to put anyone into a box or tell them how to be/not be...personality theories are simply a language that give us the tools to learn about ourselves & the people around us in ways we might have been unaware of previously & been unable to communicate if we hadn't taken a deeper look.

I'm here to help you learn through specific MXTX examples once & for all how to recognize the cognitive functions, how the types use them all differently, & how adding an Enneagram with its wing to the equation can help clarify a person's key characteristics even more.
