Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai. Filmmakers:Â Alan Dater, Lisa Merton, 2008.
The documentary tells the inspiring story of the Green Belt Movement of Kenya and its founder Wangari Maathai, the first environmentalist and first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
The U.S.- educated Professor Maathai discovered her lifeâs work by reconnecting with the rural women with whom she had grown up. Their lives had become intolerable: they were walking longer distances for firewood, clean water was scarce, the soil was disappearing from their farms, and their children were suffering from malnutrition. Maathai thought to herself, âWell, why not plant trees?â She soon discovered that tree planting had a ripple effect of empowering change. Countering the devastating cultural effects of colonialism, Maathai began teaching communities about self-knowledge as a path to change and community action. The women worked successively against deforestation, poverty, ignorance, embedded economic interests, and violent political oppression. They became a national political force that helped to bring down Kenyaâs 24-year dictatorship -Kanopy.

i know gays joke about the intimacy of hand touching and eye contact and whatever all the time and i love those jokes dearly but i think weâre all obsessed with these small barely visible gestures of love & closeness because bigger gestures ultimately make us targets for homophobiaâŠlike we want stories where gays gently touch hands at the train station or gaze at each other longingly or hug just a little too long etc because they reflect our real life experiences & usually those are the only kinds of public transgressions gay people are able to safely engage in. and sometimes not even that. sometimes a glance is enough to make you a target. sometimes you walk into a room and youâre a target. you know what i mean. gay intimacy is relegated to these infinitesimal moments because it is not allowed to exist otherwise. anyways im in a mood
âI wanted to challenge politically the kissing scene, which traditionally either has the surprise kiss scene thanks to a rain shower for instance, or the obvious kiss scene thanks to mustard on the corner of the lips, for instance, and it is generally carefully scripted as âThey kiss.â Or âThey passionately kiss.â And then itâs on the actorsâ shoulders. It seems to rely a lot on them because itâs their bodies and fluids and interaction, but it shouldnât be. Itâs fake. Itâs not about finding the magic. Actors should always be part of the elaboration of an idea, especially with intimate scenes. So I wanted to craft a scene that would embody the sexiness of consent. People who are questioning the idea of asking for consent in France, they do exist. They are brave fighters for the culture of French gallantry who say that asking for consent would not be sexy, it will break the mood. Some of the French critics thought the film lacked flesh, precisely because to them eroticism is about conflict. [âŠ] At some point I came up with the idea of them having to unveil their mouths like they would undress themselves. So I put a scarf, justified by a strong wind, pressed on their lips and thinking you would see their heavy breathing through the moving cloth.â

If grandmothers around the world had a rallying cry, it would probably sound something like âYou need to eat!â
Photographer Gabriele Galimbertiâs grandmother said something similar to him before one of his many globetrotting work trips. To ensure he had at least one good meal, she prepared for him a dish of ravioli before he departed on one of his adventures. Â
âIn that occasion I said to my grandma âYou know, Grandma, there are many other grandmas around the world and most of them are really good cooks,â Galimberti wrote via email. âIâm going to meet them and ask them to cook for me so I can show you that you donât have to be worried for me and the food that I will eat!â This is the way my project was born!â
The project, âDelicatessen With Loveâ, took Galimberti to 58 countries where he photographed grandmothers with both the ingredients and finished signature dishes.
He acted as photographer and stylist during each shoot with the grandmothers, taking a portrait of both the women and the food they made for him.
