In August 1952, actress Marilyn Monroe was officially crowned "Miss Cheesecake of 1952" by the US military newspaper Stars and Stripes at a promotional event in a Los Angeles bakery. 

The term "cheesecake" was a popular slang term used in the 1950s to describe a smiling, attractive pin-up model posing for photos. Monroe was a popular pin-up with servicemen at the time, receiving thousands of fan letters a week. 

During the photo opportunity, a highly publicised event attended by the press, Monroe was photographed wearing a crown and symbolically slicing a large cheesecake with a sword. The mutually beneficial event generated significant publicity for both the rising star and the magazine.
