Do you have any writing advice? you're really good at it :)

first of all waow thank you anon! complimenting my writing has me kicking my feet and squirming so i really appreciate it waaaah.......

secondly, this is kind of a broad question, but i think the places where i see people trip over the most when i'm reading their writing is actually in sentences. :p plot + characterisation are actually pretty easy; it's the sentence-level stuff that i think people (myself included. btw) need to focus on more

i try to keep these questions in mind when i'm writing, and ideally every sentence should have a 'yes' answer to at least half of the below:

does this sentence propel the narrative? are we one step further along than we were?

does this sentence contain micro-pacing? does the rhythm of the sentence match the mood?

does the sentence tell you something about the narrator?

is there varied sentence architecture?

is there exposition? and, harder question: is it invisible?

is the spatial blocking good? do we actually know where each character is in the room?

i dont mean you should literally read Every sentence in your work and go "hmm... yes or no...." with a pen and paper because you'd never get anything done, but more that it's a good idea to keep the sort of broad strokes of these in your mind when you're writing

i hope that's helpfullll! writing, like most stuff, isn't a talent but a skill you can refine so honestly reading a lot + writing a lot are the two best things you can do to improve <3

concept. grace trying to have his cake (prove to rocky this is not the first time in his entire life he's been close to another person) and eat it too (continue to avoid confessing he did not actually volunteer to be on the hail mary) by talking about stratt, the woman in charge of the whole project, very infrequently. five whole sentences the whole journey back to erid. but he talks about eva a lot. eva is his friend. eva worked on the project with him, eva and him spent a lot of time together, he misses her something awful, sometimes rocky reminds him of her. rocky does not need to know eva and stratt are the same person. grace is in no way hoisting a sword up to hover dangerously above his head.

first of all i am not the arbiter of having fun. other people can do whatever they like with their touys. this is jUST MY OPINIONNNN

however... a species swap doesn't really interest me! keep that guy a rock alien spider for the sake of my imaginery peanits PLEASE.,....

to be more serious i think that to species swap removes some core characterisation from each of them that is kind of load-bearing (har har) for the ship to work in my head. it's why vulcan james t kirk and human spock doesn't work in my head either. it's not that i think it's bad, more that i just can't imagine it in a way that satisfies me

i also think part of it is that i work hard in my fic to ensure rocky stays alien to grace and vice-versa (it's what makes them so fun to write :D) and so to imagine rocky as a human undoes all the alienness

and as with everything i say i can be convinced otherwise if there's a compelling enough reason so never say never

sometimes i re-read my own writing when im distanced enough from it to not see the scaffolding and im like. huh... that's pretty good, actually....

it really does just feel as though so much of writing is learning to see the scaffolding that lies beneath narrative (prose, plot, characterisation, dialogue, etc) while pretending to ignore the scaffolding at the exact same time
