the worst part of summer is that people get sooo comfortable expressing their disgust at having to see other people’s bodies. they’re always complaining about wrinkly old men at the nude hot springs or fat women in bikinis at the beach. ig since this is getting some amount of attention i'll also use this post to educate about the problem to the best of my ability (if anyone wants to chip in about it be my guest im certainly not the most qualified). and yes i get yall are upset about the porn bots but this isn't about bots this is about our sisters being harassed and threatened and having their accounts wrongly terminated. 2 years ago The CEO of Tumblr continuously terminated a trans woman and her alts and then continued to harass her on Twitter, threatening to call the cops if she continued to dispute the wrongful terminations of her blogs. Threatened to call A Person With A Gun to her home over an "explode him with hammers" type post. Trans women have been a continuous target for unjust termination by Tumblr's moderation staff regardless of their blog's content for years, and have failed to step in against users who harass trans women for a long ass time.

I don't know if I will ever feel comfortable coming out as aroace, despite being comfortably aroace. The other day someone asked me if I was queer and I felt so uncomfortable saying yes, because even if it is true, I knew it was still painting the wrong picture in this persons mind. And throughout the rest of the evening it was obvious they thought I was bi but I couldn't correct them because it's not an easy "oh I'm not X I'm Y", it's a whole new conversation: opening yourself up to uncomfortable and invasive questions, opening yourself up to the other persons astonishment and bafflement which just makes you feel more othered, opening yourself up to being hurt by casual assumptions and dismissive comments or just plain awkward silence. and usually it ends with the feeling that you didn't do enough to paint the right picture, to explain everything in a way that leaves no false impressions, that you didn't find the right words to make them truly understand you. despite such understanding taking years and years of work. It's so frustrating!

I’m so tired of the “why do people hate aspecs, they aren’t doing anything?” argument. I know that it is an attempt to support us, but it fails so spectacularly to understand aromanticism, asexuality, and any other aspec identity that it’s actively frustrating.

We are doing something. We’re rejecting allonormative ideals and that’s a massive thing to do. We’re actively fighting not just to help other aspecs, but to help everyone, because amatonormativity (and allonormativity as a whole) hurt everyone. Single people who want to find a partner but can’t also deserve to be able to exist.

There are so many issues with the expectation of marriage, including:

A single income isn't enough to get by anymore

Having a spouse is almost necessary under the current medical system

Society shames and pressures people who are single to get into relationships constantly

Rejecting allonormativity means fighting against these things that hurt everyone.

So, no, aces and aros and other aspecs aren't "doing nothing." We're doing quite a lot.
