DEATH NOTE INFECTED AU
ā GOD IS IN MY SKIN, ā
The Death Note is a cursed object that slowly bonds to and infects its user, altering and eventually consuming their body and mind the longer they are in contact with it. This creates an alternate self (think symbiote/venom-esque, but in the same body) ā in Lightās case, Kira. Light found the Death Note, and with every name he writes, he appears less and less human, developing an uncanny valley quality as the power of the a god quite literally writhes under his skin.
As of current, Light looks relatively normal, if not sickly. Thereās a slightly off-putting aspect about his appearance, though itās not prominent enough to pinpoint.
cw: mycophobia, description of something āunder oneās skinā, potentially slight body horror.
The Death Note has this effect because of how it extends the lifespans of shinigami; it physically binds itself to the shinigamiās internal organs and life force via mycelium-like extensions, and extends shinigami lifeforce into them. - - However, because Light is a human, his body and mind is not meant to accomodate this. So rather than extending his lifespan, it takes on a virus-like form, making him look more undead and uncanny valley and corrupts his mind with the perceived power of this ability to kill. Light appears to have black veins crawling up his neck, though he hides them with turtlenecks. Theyāre more prominent on his wrists, and appear especially clear right after or while using the death note. As time goes on, he becomes sensitive to bright lights. Takes place relatively early on in the timeline of the story, where Light is not as corrupt as he would become later on. Sometime before the Yotsuba arc. For later on in the story - It will, eventually, reach the point where he becomes difficult to kill (not immortal). The Death Note will eventually become his main life source, like a shinigami, and he will be able to survive even if his vital organs are damaged (albeit, not thrive, but he could hypothetically survive), so long as the āheartā of the infection is not removed (a black, tangled mass condensed in the centre of his ribcage). Though this also comes with a loss of self, coherence and sanity, similar to a prion disease. Extra: Ryuk did not intentionally deceive Light about the Death Note physically bonding to his body (though he only said heād āfeel the power of a shinigami in his veinsā, hence the misunderstanding), nor did he know the effect it would have on a human, but he finds Lightās slow deterioration and transformation very interesting.
