Finally the exams for the twins end today - we can finally play boardgames without guilt! This was more than a week ago. Big bro was at a church camp, and we were out half the day for Ash's best friend's birthday party. We took a nap after coming home, and woke up to Shn saying:" Can you guys wake up so we can play Charterstone, please?!" We did promise her we'd play it after our nap, and so we decided to start a game at about 6pm, as we were all not hungry yet. Also, Shn has a history of NOT wanting to play this game (as she hardly won the game), so we were inclined to oblige her. She surprised us all! She could recall all the obscure rules and promptly reminded us of them throughout the game. She employed different strategies and tactics in order to earn money and convert it to points. She did not cry nor throw any tantrums when she her plans were thwarted by others. And she won by a hair's breadth! Well played, lil miss! Charterstone Game 5 ! We are really enjoying the game and everyone is taking their preferred route to victory. I played hard and won this game! My last four victory points came from the Cloud Port where I gave two resources for the extra point. The moment I did that, Asher groaned out loud - coz that was exactly what he wanted to do. I hesitated, wondering if I should retract my move and allow him to do instead. The indulgent munmy side of me wanted to do that, as I wanted to see him happy. But the tough love mummy side of me knew that this is a good teachable moment for him - for every choice has an opportunity cost, he must prioritise his moves and decide what to do bearing in mind that anyone else can "take away" or block the opportunity. In the end, I did not retract my move as it would not have won him the game even if he had that extra one point. He was very down after that... And only cheered up when reading a card whose story had it that his companion had fallen in love with him. He was embarrased by the story and so he started laughing as he read the story out loud. I am glad I didn't give in to temptation and take away his learning opportunity. Our current family favourite board game - Charterstone! A legacy style board game, the game evolves through the campaign! Our first time playing a legacy game. Been an awesome experience so far! Our first game lasted three hours, subsequent two games were about two hours per game. Kids enjoyed it so much they wanted to play too games in a row last night! We are going nuts over donuts! Nah! Mummy only allows us to have donuts at most once a week for breakfast. It's this new game we started playing recently in between revising for exams - Go Nuts For Donuts (we were going nuts over exams, actually). It's really easy to learn (we watched a YouTube video) and easy to play. But it isn't always easy to win. Mummy scores very badly in this game hehehehehe but that's not why we like the game. We recently tried a new game about donuts, and we love it! Go Nuts For Donuts has you collecting donuts, different ones give you different points, or special actions. It's kinda like Sushi Go, but different. Go Nuts For Donuts also has that whole meta game thing going where you're trying to guess what other people are gonna choose - coz if you choose the same one as someone else - you both don't get to collect it! Awesome game! Cry warning though as there are some opportunities to take away other people's donuts (cards - points!) but all the more sore losers need to play so that they can learn to deal with it! The twins played Survive Escape From Atlantis on their own while I did some work. Then Asher challenged me to a Duel! 7 Wonders Duel, that is 😂 It was a close fight where I'd almost lost to him by military defeat. But I salvaged my army to hold out towards the end, so we had to count victory points to decide the Victor. I won by just one point!!! Thanks to the three coins I had at the end! So we had a quick dinner after church and rushed home so we could play a board game! Machi Koro got to the table! By the end of the game, only the Asher the winner was smiling and energetic. The other two were disappointed that they didn't do well, and went on to bed. Yes, despite lots of playing of board games, the kids can still "show black face" or throw tantrums when they don't win. It's normal! Who wouldn't want to win? Who likes to lose? And after all they are children who are still learning to control their emotions, controlling their temper. Our body clocks are so used to waking up early that the twins and I woke up at 6 plus on a Saturday morning. Asher requested to play Splendor, so we started playing at 6.30am 😂 They even caught the remnants of a sunrise. 🌅 The original rules of this game says that first to 15 points win, but the kids enjoy the game so much they usually request to extend it to first to 30 points! But today, I told them that they need to improve on their strategy and gameplay to be more efficient in gaining their points so am to be the fastest to gain the most points. So we first agreed on first to 20 points - and Shawna won! We decided to score and record her as 1st Winner, and then continue the game to first to 25 points for 2nd Winner. But Shawna still won! Gracious and she is, she added the two scores together, and Asher became 2nd Winner! We played Agricola again, though this time only three of us were playing. S went to bed early, and the hubbs was working. First time playing three player Agricola for us - not easy at all! Thanks to a last minute decision to give birth to another family member, I won by the skin of my teeth - by 1 point!
