Her sister locked her up "for Nesta's own good," even though that same sister knows full well—after spending so much time complaining herself—what it's like to be in the same situation.

Amren, who claimed to be Nesta's friend, preaches to everyone about "keep reaching out your hand," yet abandoned Nesta the moment Nesta acted as rude as Amren always does to everyone else.

Cassian acted like a predator, badgering her until she was too tired to maintain her boundaries.

Mor thought it was a good idea for Nesta to go to CoN and live there, putting her in the same environment Mor herself knows is cruel and dangerous to women.

Rhysand was consistently cruel to Nesta, so threatened by her that he repeatedly endangered her safety, threatened her life, and insisted she work under his supervision.

Azriel was complicit in many of these scenarios.

The only reason Nesta actually got better was because of her friendship with Gwyn and Emerie. It was them. And I don’t want to hear, “WitHOuT rHYs, NeStA wOUldN’t hAvE mEt GwYn AnD eMErIe” because without Rhysand and Feyre’s stupidity and narcissism (they think they’re the only ones who can prevent the war somehow *gag*), Nesta wouldn’t be traumatized by that damn cauldron in the first place and wouldn’t have been in that war. As if she didn’t already have enough unresolved trauma from her childhood.

SJM is just ignorant and hypocritical, too blind to see how toxic the IC is. If by the end of this, Nesta killed Rhys and wiped the IC off the planet, people would hate Nesta so much—but I would applaud Nesta and SJM, because for once, SJM would have done something right for acotar.

Ironic how they'll write essays about how it's fine that Feyre was a bitch and rude and suspicious in the first book because she was raised to fear the fae after everything they did to humans but then when Nesta and Elain are afraid of the giant illyrian males intruding on their space and being hostile to them, all of a sudden they should be welcoming and help them and grateful that they took them back to the Night court after they were ripped out of their beds and forced to become fae (thanks in part to Feyres loose lips and Rhysand letting the Attor track Feyre to their home) without their sister, where they put them in a house they couldn't leave surrounded by the same males who hate them (or at least Nesta) even though they were raised the same as Feyre. Smh

further Star Wars positivity post: the whole wampa sublot at the beginning of ESB doesn't add anything to the plot but it does serve to convey how close Luke, Han & Leia have all got since the previous movie; we see Han being willing to risk freezing to death to save Luke & Leia's genuine devastation when she's forced to order them locked out of the base overnight. this is all very important given that they're about the spend the rest of the movie split up into separate plot threads but w their friendship being absolutely vital to the climax.

AITA for striking my (M43) son (M20) when he rejected me as his father?

I understand that the title might have you thinking the worst, but please hear me out.

I didn't have a relationship with my son for basically all his life. This was due to my circumstances at the time: I went through a major personal tragedy and was severely injured, to the point of being on life support. To this day I have a lot of issues with my health.

I recently reconnected with my son. I immediately invited him to meet my boss (M92), in hopes that I could set him up with a job opportunity. I feel that this is significant. As far as I know, my son has been working in menial jobs in agriculture, but then apparently chose to leave that life and - to my shock - join a criminal syndicate.

I felt as if getting a good government job would be a way to turn over a new leaf in his life, especially given his past. However, he immediately became combative. I attempted to give him some guidance in managing his emotions, but he rejected that as well.

I'm sad to say that the argument became physical. Some blows were exchanged, but in the end, I was angry enough to strike him. I immediately felt very bad, and decided to offer him the government job on the spot. He rejected me again, and chose to leave very abruptly. I haven't had any contact with him since.

So, AITA?

Edit: Yes, I admit that to call it striking him was an understatement. To clarify, I cut off his hand.

Edit: However, I feel like it should be stated that I myself am a quadruple amputee and we have excellent healthcare.

Edit: I did not immediately identify myself as his father when we met. I think this was my mistake. I think he would have been much more receptive of my message had I done so. As it stands I only told him of our relationship after I had struck him.

I think the way Sarah J Maas depicts Tamlin’s abusive traits are indicative of the simplistic understanding she has when it comes to depictions of abuse. Even when the text views Tamlin as irredeemable for his actions, it still strangely gives him an out by bringing magic into it. By having his magical outbursts be involuntary (and have little evidence to challenge that notion) she makes abuse seem like the accidental result of uncontrollable emotion as opposed to deliberate tactics of control.

This is why she can’t clock the irony of Rhysand presenting a compelling case of covert abuse, because she doesn’t have the imagination to consciously write an emotionally abusive or controlling dynamic.

The dissonance between era inspiration in ACoTaR is one of the more brushed over flaws in the book series. Looking at the Inner Circle's fashion alone, we jump between "literal scraps of fabric" (Under the Mountain, Court of Nightmares) to "orientalist painter's imaginings of the Ottoman Harem" (clothing described during Feyre's first few visits to the Night Court) to "modern 'corset' dress" (Feyre's Starfall dress, majority of Mor's clothing, most of the clothes drawn in fan art) to "modern -- almost sci-fi style -- skin-tight leather armor" to "sweater and leggings combo".

Then, between courts, we have Helion wearing Spirit Halloween's take on the ancient Grecian tunic; Feyre's Spring Court wedding dress looking like an 1830s fashion plate; and Dawn heavily implied to have traditional East Asain clothing (e.g. kimono, hanfu, hanbok).

On top of all of that, some of the Dawn Court's small cities ". . . specialized in tinkering and clockwork and clever things. . ." which -- combined with Lucien's metal eye and Nuan's mechanical hand -- implies a sort of post-industrial revolution time period. However, a decent chunk of the fandom says that ACoTaR is medieval; which, yeah, it's medieval themed in the first book -- sans the "dress" Rhysand forces Feyre to wear UTM.

The wild inconsistencies in ACoTaR's inspiration leads, not to a rich and diverse world, but a world that seems ramshackle and haphazard -- like it's creator simply threw together a board on Pinterest and called it a day. This is a major part of why the world building is so abysmal, it relies on convenience to the plot and whatever pleases the aesthetic whims of the author. Cultures deemed "pretty" or "badass" are thrown together, irregardless of how far apart they actually are. This is not only disrespectful to the narrative, but to the readers and the cultures used as inspiration.

All of this to say: Sarah J Maas is a bad author, not just because of the way she handles serious topics like power dynamics and abuse, but also because she cannot put together a world that is even the slightest bit cohesive.

Let's review the things Nesta went through for the illiterate ones who jump at any chance to dismiss a woman's trauma, shall we?

had her palms beaten raw by her grandmother at the age of seven for missteps in her dancing lessons

groomed by her mother as a child to seduce elder men and was led to believe she was only as worthy as the title she married

was almost raped by Tomas Mandray and physically assaulted when she attempted to fight back.

neglected by her father, the man who was supposed to take care of them and bring food to the table

was put in a position where she wanted to starve to death just so her father would get up and provide for them

was shoved into the cauldron against her will (which she described as having molten ore poured into her veins and her human blood boiling) had her bodily autonomy stripped from her, and died as a human

watched her father's neck being snapped right after he told her he loved her

she became depressed and reclusive, "feeling nothing" after the war ended

she couldn't take baths from her trauma of the cauldron, she had to wash herself using buckets

she couldn't endure small spaces due to the cauldron

had to endure the cold in her apartment because the sound of cracking logs reminded her of her father's neck being snapped

was locked up in the HoW because men once again think they know what's best for women against her will

was SAed by the kelpie, monsters known for raping women before they eat them
