they didn't “demonize” the darkling for the show, he is horrible, evil, and a manipulator in the books too. they didn't make mal more “likable” for the show, he is as sweet, caring, loving, and self-sacrificing as he is in the books.

Alina and Mal are the blueprint. They are all of the purest tropes we salivate over in fiction. They are:

- Childhood best friends who remained best friends for life - Best friends to lovers - Each others homes - Lonely orphans who found love and warmth and home in each other and strove to never let that go - Above all choose each other time and time and time again - Would go to the very ends of the earth for each other (and have) - Would literally die for the other one (and uh… I mean… have) - Are both chosen ones with powerful blood coursing through both their veins, both of whom are required to save the world - Both have the ‘moment of realisation’ they love the other and the entire world shifts under their feet - The ‘cuddling for warmth in the snow under blankets while eating hard cheese’ fantasy trope - “YOU have to be the one to kill me if it comes to that because I don’t trust anybody else like I love and trust you” - Angst and miscommunication and insecurity thrown in, just to cause a little tension at points - Are constantly pushed and pulled apart by forces beyond their power, yet overcome every single obstacle to choose each other - HEIGHT DIFFERENCE - Strong, handsome, tough guy with a heart of gold meets small, unknowingly beautiful, powerful girl who could kill you - Bickering paired with handholding - “If this is the last night we’ll both be alive I want to spend it with you” trope - Survivors of war who rebuild and recover by choosing a life together - The orphans who choose to run an orphanage, and give children the joyful childhood they were robbed of as children of war - Young MARRIED couple living a life full of love and safety after all the obstacles they’ve gone through

i cannot even begin to contemplate how horrendously painful it must be for leigh, who wrote alina escaping the darkling’s clutches as a way of coping with her own need to escape a toxic relationship… and then witness people time and time again ship those two characters together.

i truly cannot imagine how painful it must be for leigh seeing this. and so do i blame her for really upping the ante with anti-darkling rhetoric in recent years? no. if you created a relationship specifically to mirror your experience of abuse and your relief in escaping, and your readers responded by going on and on about how perfect that relationship is… god i cannot even imagine
