Prompt 4. âI know you didnât ask for this.â
âI know you didnât ask for this,â she told him as he opened the door, âbut everyone needs someone when theyâre sick.â
âWhat are you doing here, Lindsay?â Asked Drautos tiredly while standing in the doorway of his quarters at the citadel.
âI made some chicken noodle for you,â she said lifting the large container as if to prove her point, and proceeded to brush past him into his quarters before he could block her way.
âWhat?â he started and stared after her as she disappeared around the corner into his kitchen. There was a moment of silence before the sounds of cupboards being opened and closed met his ears, followed by her voice. âWhere the heck are your bowls?â
Sighing in defeat, Captain Drautos closed the door and made his way into the kitchen, stopping to rest his hands on the island. âThis is kind of you, but entirely unnecessary.â
Closing yet another cabinet in disappointment, Lindsay turned to him. âOh, but it is, Captain. If youâre not feeling well, then you need someone to look after you. Thatâs just the way it is.â
âItâs a cold. Iâm not dying,â he said matter-of-factly and trying hard not to sniffle.
Lindsay had returned to opening cupboards and finally found the bowls next to the refrigerator. Â Pulling one out and setting it on the counter she spoke over her shoulder. âWell tough. Iâm going to take care of you anyways. Canât have it known our Captain is human after all, you know. It would ruin the glaivesâ image as a unstoppable catastrophic force.â
Drautos fought the urge to smile at her words, and mostly succeeded before a violent sneeze forced its way out. âDonât even say it,â he said.
Turning around Lindsay raised her eyebrows at him and gave him a look that said âtold-you-so.â âBless you.â
âWhy donât you go blow your nose, and then find a comfy spot to sit and have your soup,â she suggested as she returned to rummaging around his kitchen for utensils and preparing his meal.
âFine,â was all he said and disappeared into the depths of his apartment sniffling to himself. Moments later, he returned to find a place set at his dining table complete with a steaming bowl of chicken noodle soup. Lindsay was seated at the table next to the place setting.
âWell go on,â she said gesturing to his seat.
Drautos dropped onto his chair and scooted closer before reaching for the spoon then pausing. âYou arenât going to sit there and watch me eat, are you?â he asked.
Lindsay laughed. âI figured I could keep you company for a little while.â
He grunted in reply as he took the first spoonful of soup.
âNot bad, eh?â she asked watching him with a hopeful expression.
âNot bad,â he agreed with a nod.
She looked pleased with herself. âThereâs more in the fridge, just heat it up later when you get hungry. If you want I can go get you a baguette, too, since your cupboards appear to be empty.â
âYou donât have to mother me,â he said more harshly than he intended before taking another spoonful of the soup.
âI just want to take care of you,â she replied brushing off his brusqueness with a wave of her hand. âSomebody has to.â
âAnd here I thought you were just trying to get out of guard duty. As I recall, shouldnât you be on the Princeâs detail this afternoon?â
Lindsay looked away guiltily. âNyx has it handled. Besides, I got Tredd to cover me.â
Drautos looked surprised. âAnd what did that cost you?â
âYou donât want to know,â she said with a wince and not making eye contact with him.
His mouth dropped open and he stared at her for a moment before recovering and returning to his soup. âThatâs none of my business.â
âWhat?! No! Its not like that!â she squealed at him embarrassed. âHell no! Not Tredd! Yuck! I just agreed to help set him up with a girl on the ninth floor. But honestly, it isnât going to work out. Heâs barking up the wrong tree, but Iâm not gonna tell him that. Heh, Crowe would have a better shot with her, than him!â she chuckled and launched into details about her plan.
Drautos shook his head and continued to eat his soup while Lindsay proceeded to chatter away about everything and anything that came to mind. He decided her company was a pleasant distraction, and the soup wasnât half bad either.
