Nyx Week 2026 :: Day Two :: Whimsy in Dark Places

Getting new recruits into the Glaive is far from unexpected. Nyx had seen a number of people wet behind the ears enroll into the Glaive once they came of age only to quit and forfeit the safety of the Wall as little as a day later. These recruits, however...now these ones were definitely not the usual gamut. While he and the other Glaive can only speculate as to why they're here, he does find an opportunity to get introduced to one of them at the very least.

Noble blood had entered into the Kingsglaive. That was the news that spread quick like wildfire among those who were sworn into service. It was unusual. Nobility were typically turned into Crownsguard; those who were in a higher, more cushier station than those of the Glaive. The biggest question was why would they have done it willingly knowing that the Glaive were expected to go past the Walls — New and Old — in order to put their lives on the line against any daemonic or Empire attack set upon the Crown City? Glaive lives were more disposable than that of the Guard.

Surely it was far from the 'noble goodness' of their hearts…

While Nyx believed in King Regis — perhaps more than any Glaive should have — there were plenty of valid criticisms that the royal and even noble families had earned over time. Especially when it came to the general disregard to the lands and people that resided outside the Wall. Hell, especially even when it came to those serving in the Kingsglaive in general.

But that latter part was why it was intriguing. Maybe even a little concerning.

Then Nyx saw who they were, and he had a moment where his stomach did an uncomfortable flip. They were practically still children fresh out of school with the way they looked and carried themselves. They were the twins of House Chorus — Arm of the King as their official title that the public knew.

Neither of them looked particularly proud to be there. No, the taller twin had his brow set in this furious knit, and Nyx could tell his jaw was clenched tight enough to crack diamonds. The sister, on the other hand, looked as if she had been crying — the area around her eyes were mildly swollen and shone with that tearful residue while her nose and cheeks retained this rosy hue to them. Nyx was familiar with that when he used to steal away into his room when the memories of losing Selena became too much to bear in the moment.

This was not their choice. Far from it. Whatever the case was, it seemed like one thing was certain: this was a punishment of some sort. It must have been. There was no other explanation.

So what did they do?

"Guess being born with a silver spoon in your maw doesn't shield you from the ire of the royal family…" Luche commented at one point while a handful of the Glaive were out at training. Nyx lolled his head over in Luche's direction, a frown deepening on his face. Luche was leaned against a pillar, arms folded over his chest as he gazed out toward the warping spire — the structure used for practicing aiming one's warp strikes.

"They're just kids…they probably didn't even do anything," Nyx replied, throwing up a hand briefly. "Even if they had, no doubt we'd be hearing all about it in the news, or something."

Nyx then nodded his head in the direction of the twins; they had been clearly holding back from showing off too much in the presence of the rest of the Glaive. There was just something about how both of them clearly had different levels of training under their belts…not to mention the fact that nobility were born with the King's Magic versus them, who were only granted the King's Magic once they were sworn into service. Even if they were younger than all of them there, having more of an innate sense of how to use magic versus having a late start to using it made them more formidable than they looked.

"Those two were always with the prince, weren't they?" Nyx asked in rhetorical fashion. "If it was serious, I'd bet anything the news would have been eating it up the moment they did anything that would have landed them here."

"So then what do you think?" Luche drawled, looking at Nyx with an incredulous stare.

A beat passed, and Nyx shrugged.

"I don't know what to think," Nyx replied. "It just seems weird. You get two nobles born into a noble family, grew up being conditioned for their role as nobility… Kinda feels out of place. Kinda feels sudden."

"Hn…" Luche hummed, returning his attention toward the twins. The girl had warped to the top of the spire, her hand gripping the hilt of a sword as she dangled easily thirty or forty feet up in the air. That was when a question was posited by Luche: "You don't think they're here to make an example of us, do you? They caught several of us Glaive slacking, so they send in noble whelps like them to show us that even those wet behind the ears can utilize the King's Magic better than we can?"

"Seems a little counterintuitive…" Nyx scratched his jaw and then sighed. "I don't know, though. Could be."

Night had fallen, and Nyx had forgotten about the noble kids that were in the Glaive for the most part. There were far more pressing matters to have tended to throughout the day after a time, and tending to them was just what he was finishing up doing. Now, it was really just a case of packing up his gear and making his way home. Making his way there meant going through the veranda that lined the Glaive HQ, and making his way through that, he was stopped. Not by anyone physically, but instead by the sound of someone whispering who sounded like they were on the verge of tears.

Nyx slowed his gait until he was stopped. It was far from him to sit and eavesdrop, but he also didn't want to spook the person. It was clearer than crystal that whoever it was, she had stuff to get off her chest, and so he lingered close, and he lingered quietly.

"—uess I won't be going with you guys to Altissia…" The royal accent hung loose upon the young woman's words, only a whisper compared to the grief that laid more thick within her hushed tone. "But…I hope you all have fun."

She was trying to be upbeat for whoever it was on the other end.

"Y-You, Iggy, and Gladio…you should all give Noct a hard time for both Tandem and I," the young woman continued, a forced laugh pushing past her lips before stuttering and turning into a poorly concealed hiccup. Nyx could hear the faint murmurings of someone on the other end — not enough to make out whatever it was they were saying.

"Mm-mm…" The woman sighed, and Nyx heard her shift. "We don't know anything about the decision. Not in full."

Another pause in this one-sided eavesdropping.

"… Yeah…" The woman took in a breath, and then let out a long, quiet sigh. "I don't know… I wish I did. But…I'll let you go. I'm just glad I could call before the trip preparations. Mm…yeah. Good night, Prompto. Take lots of pictures, alright?"

A small, forced giggle.

"Of course. Sleep well yourself…"

And that was that. Nyx debated whether or not he should have carried on his way. Again, there was little in him that desired spooking the poor thing. She sounded like she had a lot just nagging away at her and chewing at her from the inside out. Nyx could relate to having to try and stay positive in the face of all the soul crushing things that weighed at him.

Nyx heard the woman sniffle before she muttered something to psyche herself up. She rounded the corner after a time, and then the next thing Nyx knew was having her yelp ring through his head while both seeing and feeling this icy gust hit him like opening the door to a blizzard. The jolt of adrenaline saved him from the worst of it until it died down — then he just felt his arms and legs sting with that sensation of being so cold it felt like being on fire.

"Oh—sh-shit, I'm sorry—!" the woman quickly stammered over herself, lifting a hand. Flames danced between her fingers, and the ice began to thaw.

"You, uh…always give people you don't know such a cold reception?" Nyx joked with a lopsided smirk to hide the fact he had also been startled. He hardly expected the young woman to have let slip a cuss of one kind or another. Then, he took a page from the woman's book and conjured flame within his own palms to hurry the process of freeing himself along.

"Sorry…" she muttered again.

"Don't be…" Nyx said, pulling his arm loose of the ice. He was grateful it wasn't thick. "Shouldn't have snuck up on you like that."

"You didn't…"

Well…Nyx supposed that was true. In a sense. Still, he wouldn't say anything to the contrary. He didn't need her mad at him as well — even if she would have been well within her right to be.

"You, uh…" Nyx began, taking a split second to debate whether or not to scratch at the scab that was obviously there for her. "You alright?"

The part of him that did actually care won out.

"Mm…" the young woman nodded, her eyes pointed ever downward.

"… If you're sure…" Nyx shook off some loose shards of ice from him, the pieces clacking against the concrete. He mulled over "Well…I'm Nyx. If you need anything, you can come to me."

"… That's kind of you," was the response. Though she still kept her gaze largely pointed downward for a while longer, the young woman finally looked up at Nyx. Her lashes were still wet and clung together with tears recently shed. Her lips parted, then she pursed them. Parted again. Nyx was silent all the while as she struggled with whatever it was that fought to come out.

"I'm, um…I'm Primam. Most people just call me 'Prim'… I usually prefer it that way…" Primam's voice quieted the more she spoke.

So there was an exchange of names; that was a good and positive step. It was, however, hard to tell if Prim was just shy, or if she was trying not to be too emotional in the face of a stranger. It could have been a combination of the two.

"A nice 'prim and proper' name," Nyx commented, unable to resist injecting his own little whimsy to see if he could lighten the mood. He wasn't always good at it, but it wasn't for a lack of trying.

Again, another forced sound of amusement left Primam. She was being polite — or trying to. Given the assumed predicament she must have been under, Nyx couldn't blame her. Though, honestly, he kind of just wanted to bring a smile to her face to cheer her up in some capacity.

"Ah, you must've heard that a hundred times before, though, huh?" Nyx went on when Prim said nothing further.

"Something like that…" Prim replied, another halfhearted giggle following her words. This time it sounded less forced. Thankfully.

"There's a laugh. I'll take that as a win."

Primam laced her fingers around her phone and held her hands at rest. She scoffed this time, but at least it still seemed amused. She nodded, conceding this, and went on to say, "Well, it's been a pleasure, Nyx. Though, I fear I must return to the women's barracks. Also, I imagine you're also on your own way to…some nightly arrangement."

The way she said that was rather…open-ended, but Nyx tried not to think about that too hard.

"You want me to escort you?" Nyx said it before he could really stop himself.

"It's—" Prim lifted a hand, jabbing a thumb in the direction she would be heading "—just a short distance away. I appreciate the thought, though."

"Right, yeah, sorry." Nyx sidestepped with a start and motioned for Prim to go on ahead without him barring her way through the veranda. "Offer's still on the table, though: if you need anything, let me know. Know the Glaive HQ and things we do inside and out at this point."

"Sure. Would be useful — at least at a time where it's not so late," Primam replied with a half-cocked smile, offering her own polite half-bow when given clearance. Waving to him, she bid him farewell and walked down the pathway.

Nyx looked after her for a time until she disappeared around the corner. With the magic she doled out at him, he wasn't really worried for her well-being. He was sure she would have made it back to the barracks on her own well enough. With that having to be as much of a comfort as he could afford himself, Nyx went along on his way back to the subway that was part of his typical route to and from his apartment.

I love how some folks write Luche and Nyx based on, this idea that Nyx was the leading voice bringing folks to Insomnia, that Nyx has a lot of sway with the community/Is a popular sorta infamous legend in Insomnia So he has a lot of cultural/community sway, but also looks good on Paper for Insomnians That Luche resents Nyx for not doing more with that voice/position and that its like unfair of him but understandable its a juicy dynamic thats not exactly whats usually going on in my AU's a) because in my AU's their closely related, as reveled in "He's the Flower Between The Cracks" I write them as first cousins and b) i like reading that dynamic but i don't necessarily think id be that great at writing it in a satisfying way But in most of my AU's the dynamic is, which i hinted at it in "He's the Flower Between The Cracks"

The three had headed to the store after a mission they’d returned from, feeling too worn and unsettled to just head out into the distinct. Luche had offered to pay for a few cans of drinks and neither Nyx nor him were one to turn down free alcohol. Nor was Nyx one to turn down time with his cousin

Besides, Luche had been... steadily growing distant since coming to insomnia That's why he was Drautos' second in command after all. The man hadn’t been raised in Galahd, didn’t even know the rumors, didn’t seem touched by their magic and for that Libertus would always be wary even if the others weren’t, but he did have eyes. He could see how with every plan laid out, every order given, how eyes would turn to Luche."

"-his thoughts hadn’t been on adapting the local Galahdi lingo for places. - ‘Nyx would probably know.’ The aunties loved Nyx, Libertus was merely tolerated by association.

Luche is the leading voice of the Galahdians in the Kingsglaive but it's Nyx who is most at home in Śaraṇa-Nivās, the Galahdian District, and it's Nyx who most has the ear and eye of the regular galahdian people not in the Glaive So their taking on two differing responsibilities but Luche is not very happy with it? Beyond that, with the way the Lazarus clan works in my AU's usually,, Luche feels isolated from their people, while Nyx seems much more accepted and enveloped in their community, and Luche is growing resentful of that fact, but still tries to make attempts to bridge the gap It dosen't help that their in two very different friend groups and Luche has, people who are also isolated and also angry which is just echo chambering Luche's feelings/thoughts Beyond that, Nyx tries to be considerate of Luche being so busy and therefor accepts hangouts that Luche organizes but doesn't tend to organize them himself, which is making Luche very frustrated - but hes not communicating it Luche is busy, being Drautos second, trying to bridge the cultural divide of the galahdians vs everyone else, his visions (my galahd clan magic system is explained a little in OHAH) and being the lazarus clan head in Insomnia - which he isn't supposed to be anymore, Luche in OHAH has just recently in the past year or so become Drautos' second before this he was clan head but a regular glaive, then Navi Lazarus the old second was injured critically in battle and had to retire from the glaive. Which meant Luche stepped into his role, Navi should have taken over Luche's role with the clan but so far... they haven't Luche feels like Nyx is drifting away from him, Luche wants to be close again, he wants them to hangout even though he's so busy with his responsibilities- Nyx doesn't see that Nyx is trying to be kind, trying to be helpful by not adding more onto Luche's plate but really Luche just,, wants Nyx to reach out and help balance the plate but luche is terrible at communicating that Their relationship has not reached the state its in by Canon but you can see the beginnings of it forming Well until Prompto's going to stumble in and shake things up Luche and Nyx have the best relationship in "Second to Mind" Because for one, Nyx isn't as close to other folk in the district in said AU - his Fae instincts make him slightly possessive of those he sees as his like Luche, meaning nyx does hangout with him more just because of instinct, and two Nyx isn't as well known in the general population of Insomnia because Nyx was sticking heavily to himself and the district on the grounds of being a Fae in another's Fae's territory without their permission Also, Big Factor, Nyx was dying It's kinda hard to be mad at what's like equivalently a terminally ill family member? Like, obviously Nyx wasn't taking on more responsibilities and lightning Luche's burden, half the time his cousin would be about to keel over and NOW Nyx is in a deal with the reigning Fae of insomnia, the Marshal of the Crownsguard, someone they know of but do not truly know and Nyx is in the lesser position of the two in the deal Basically, Cor has both Libertus and Luche reacting to his presence like angrily hissing cats even though he saved Nyx's life Their just protective of him <3 In "Before Tomorrow" the dynamic is almost flipped with Nyx being the jealous one,

jealous luche found a soulmate, jealous that soulmate is galahdian which would have been fucking perfect for nyx (though in fairness while luche's lazarus powers are Not as Strong in this AU he too does kind of need a galahdian partner, to talk to)

jealous luche seems to have founded his own little pack etc

but also is jealous of axis because hes like, slotted into luches life now in a way nyx dosent feel like he can anymore complete flip whereas before luche was upset their not as close - now nyx is of course luche can see it but its very hard to get this version of Nyx to let him, or anyone else in, when Nyx is lying to everyone about how hes actually doing,, beyond that theres the underlying resentment of the fact that Luche alongside Crowe and Lib we're the ones to bring Nyx back to human form after the fall of galahd, Nyx had transformed for a final time to buy time for other's to escape, he managed to get onto one of the boats and when they docked in this version of the au his friends and cousin found him (in the unpublished version they weren't able to before Nyx ran off, in coeurl form.. alone. which changes things significantly.) Okay, i think thats everything - i might come back and add onto this overtime, any questions?

I'm just realising how much of a fucking idiot Luche is. Yeah sure he thinks he's the smartest person in the world but this idiot shoots Crowe and leaves her to die for some random Lucians to find her an indeterminate amount of days later

This absolute idiot leaves Crowe, the best mage the Kingsglaive has ever seen, alone to die without supervision. Crowe, who has access to the fucking Armiger and likely to phoenix downs. Crowe, who can literally probably heal herself through the power of the Crystal's magic

And he just leaves her there and expects her to die

I have no idea how to draw Luche as a cat. I thought maybe I could capture it through his gaze, but nope. I originally wanted to draw him holding his gun with his mouth, but then I decided against it. XD

My headcanon is that Yamachang is a former member of the Kingsglaive.
