Dominican Rite Requiem: Third Mass of All Souls

Once a semester the friars at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington DC celebrate a ‘Missa Maior’ with three ranks of sacred ministers - priest, deacon, sub-deacon, and two acolytes.

As the Epistle is chanted by the sub-deacon, the deacon unfolds the corporal on the Altar

Back in the 14th century, St. Catherine of Siena wrote something that seems particularly relevant to our 21st century lifestyles. I certainly want to search out the way (to peace), because we have fallen into such danger and harm both spiritually and physically. And I don’t see any other way but one…I mean the holy way! The “holy way” is to make Sunday Mass a priority no matter what. It is one hour a week in which you can join with other disciples in accepting Jesus’s invitation: Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile. There is nothing unreasonable about insisting on one hour of PERFECT PEACE in a week filled with demands and stress. If you’re reading this reflection, you probably have made Eucharist a priority in your life…so why not extend the invitation to someone who hasn’t. Invite a friend to Come away to a deserted place and rest awhile.

Religion Judges

It’s not against my religion to hate. But it is against yours. So why is it that I’m a more accepting person than you? Why is it that someone’s gender or sexuality or race doesn’t bother me that way it bothers you? It’s your duty as a christian to not be a judgemental asshole yet that’s all you seem to be doing, meanwhile the only thing I’m hating on is religion for hating on other people.

well, there are a lot of answers to this being an atheist (I assume) means you make the rules for yourself and believe whatever makes sense to you that day. being a catholic means I follow the rules made by The One who made the truth, meaning all of my rules are divinely assigned and in accord with absolute truth. also, not approving of certain actions doesn’t mean you hate someone for doing them. a close family member of mine is a drug addict, but I certainly don’t hate her. drugs are bad, duh, but this person is still absolutely central in my life and I love her. similarly, I love everyone while knowing that some of the things they do are wrong. that’s okay, because I love people enough to try and gently guide them to the truth. things like sexual orientation, gender identity, etc, don’t actually bother me because I realize that people are still PEOPLE and not just their characteristics. I try to get to know souls, not genitals. of course being judgmental is wrong, but we are literally supposed to discern right from wrong. when i realize that what someone is doing is wrong, I don’t think that i’m better than them, but I try to help them. that’s love.

But it’s not helping, and it is hate. The truth can be good it doesn’t have to be hate. You said it’s about discerning right from wrong. What’s wrong with being gay aside from religion says its bad? Absolutely nothing, it’s not about judgment or right and wrong it is hate and it’s rude. Getting your rules from a book someone claims to be from the word of God means nothing to me, religion has no value because it only seems to have caused bad.

I really don’t feel like addressing the “I disagree with what you say so it’s bad!!! it’s hate!!!!!!!” sentences but:

-the Catholic Church kept records of books and writing after the Roman Empire fell apart so that all of the displaced people wouldn’t be left alone. that’s why we have the Roman alphabet still. -Catholics (namely st. Camilus) invented the modern hospital systems of nurse rotation, changing the patients sheets without moving them, and many more things -the Catholic Church was the biggest patron of the arts during the baroque and classical music periods and also the idea of notated music came from the monasteries -the church is one of the largest charitable organizations in the world -the Big Bang theory was created by a Jesuit priest -the Catholic Church is responsible for the college system -creation of optics (by Francis bacon at the request of pope clement vii) -uplifting the status of women by veneration of Mary and the other hundreds of female saints

and that’s just some stuff off the top of my head. please actually look things up before you make accusations. do you know any actual religious people?

"Maybe we need to ask as a nation again do we really believe that (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness)? Let's start with some basic things: How about a child at 20 weeks that we know scientifically can feel pain, cannot have their limbs ripped apart in abortion. There are only seven countries in the world that do that. We are in a prime group like North Korea and China that still allow abortions that late. Maybe we need to ask the question again, is that who we really are as America? Maybe we need to ask the question again with Planned Parenthood who we gave half a billion in funding to that maybe this isn't a good idea."
