Love You Teacher and DID

When people originally were saying Love You Teacher and DID I kind of dismissed it because the show felt like it was going in a direction of like a combination of tv show unrealistic amnesia and age regression. But episode 7 made it super clear that it’s not tv show fake amnesia. It’s real DID.

He had a lot of childhood trauma and his brain formed into being Sun (the trouble maker child) and Solar (an introject of his mom’s tv show puppet, a lion who is cheerful and helps everyone). And when his mom tried to walk them both into traffic it was so traumatic that his brain locked down Sun and put Solar in charge. So the puppet introject has been running the body for like 20 years now.

Getting hit by the car didn’t “brain damage tv show amnesia” him. It was triggering. It triggered his brain to Sun’s last experience and to the trauma that made him go dormant in the first place and Sun was pushed to the front again for the first time in 20 years.

They keep playing that song for Sun thinking that they are “healing him” by returning him to being Solar, but the song is triggering for him. Hearing the song makes Sun cry, and start to remember his childhood trauma with his mother, and it triggers Solar into coming to the front protectively. It’s not healing him it’s hurting him.

And speaking of hurting him: they all want him to return to being Solar only because Solar is the alter that they know. But both Sun and Solar are him. They’re both real. They both deserve to get to be happy. And if you really wanted to go down the ableist singlet route of arguing that only one of them is real and the other is a coping strategy, this last episode would have proved that it’s Solar who would be the coping strategy, not Sun. Like before you maybe could have tried to argue that Sun is a coping strategy of Solar returning to being 7 years old to try to get the safe, happy, mischief childhood he never got to have. But after episode 7, if you are trying to argue that only one of them is “real” (which again is ableist, in systems all the alters are “real”) you would have to argue that it’s Solar who isn’t real. Solar is an introject of a puppet that was split to protect them from their childhood. His job is to be happy and to help people and to keep them safe.

But this also makes me wonder if there is a third alter who is acting as a trauma holder. Because Solar is an introject of the lion puppet who acts as the protector, who fronts, and who has no access to the childhood memories whatsoever. And it seems like Sun (as we know him now) is a little who also doesn’t hold the trauma. He is the child part who got locked down whose job now is to have the troublemaking happy childhood he didn’t get before. So is there another alter who is the trauma holder? Is there a third alter who took the part that is the kid who throws bottles and doesn’t smile and draws dark crayon drawings and who has to hold onto the memory of his mother walking him into traffic so that Solar and Sun didn’t have to carry that?

And obviously parts of the show’s portrayal are still unrealistic for tv (such as the switching consistently every time they fall asleep etc) in the same way that Jee’s ocd is a bit the stereotypical “perfectionism” type of ocd. But in both cases, it is a far better portayal than I would be expecting. It seems like for both, the show actually tried to take on a more nuanced depiction of mental health.

Like they introduce Jee as a perfectionist character who Pobmek always feels like he is competing with, and then reveal that it’s not perfectionism and his ocd can actually be very hard for him.

And they introduce Pobmek’s mother as being so sweet and understanding to everyone in a way that makes you think Pobmek is the one putting pressure on himself. Like there are so many bls where the kid is running themselves ragged for the parents, or are terrified of telling them that they are queer (or some other secret) and then the parents are so good about it and show that all the stress and worry was so silly. And that not how it goes in real life. So the show gives you that set up where you’re almost ready to laugh at Pobmek for being so irrationally worried about his sweet mom, only to reveal that his anxiety is totally justified. He has real childhood trauma and his mom is not the bl trope of a parent being surprisingly understanding.

And the show sets you up with Solar having a head injury that seems to have caused tv style amnesia, only to reveal that it’s real-life trauma induced dissociative amnesia.

All three of these portrayals aren’t perfect but they introduce them along the lines of tropes so that they can actively depart from the trope to talk about real life issues. Jee may fall into stereotypes of ocd and perfectionism, but his character is also an active choice to twist the “perfect rival” trope to try to make a sympathetic depiction of compulsions. Pobmek’s mom may be another “bl parent who immediately fixes her abusive ways after one conversation” but her character also was a choice to depart from the trope of “you’re so stressed for no reason because parents will love and understand you” and to show how invalidating and tough it is to deal with an abuser who seems so kind and understanding to everyone else. And Sun/Solar may not be the most accurate depiction of how switching works, but the show decided that instead of using fantasy amnesia they were going to make their protagonist and love interest be one of the most empathetic depictions of DID I have ever seen.

Sun and Solar have DID and not only does everyone in their life truly see them as two distinct people, they also all love and support them. The students respect Solar as a teacher, and play and gossip with Sun as their coolest friend. Pobmek is a supportive and loving partner to Solar, and although he isn’t great with kids, he loves Sun so much and tries his best to take care of him.

(Side note, I love how much everyone respects that they are not only two different people but two different ages. My biggest fear with this show was that there would be some weirdness as it’s a romance show where one party becomes a child, but every single character who interacts with Sun understands and respects that despite how he looks, he is 7 years old. The students all play with him like any other kid. He gets “Nong”ed by staff. And the show has NEVER [so far] had any mix ups where Pobmek kisses Sun or is inappropriate or anything. I was terrified that the show would try to do a comedy “oh no I just smooched Sun” thing and I have been beyond relieved with how they have shown that Pobmek’s relationship with Sun and his relationship with Solar are completely different because they are two different people and are different ages.)

TLDR: It’s not perfect, but they made a character with DID who has experienced massive trauma, and everyone in their life now knows they are a system, respects that they are a system, and adores both Sun and Solar. When have you ever seen a character with DID who gets to be a protagonist, gets to be a love interest, and gets to be absolutely adored by their whole community, for all of who they are, even the alters who cause trouble. And I hope that in the coming episodes the other characters come to understand that they don’t need to try to “heal” them because both Solar and Sun are real and are sticking around.

How would I even begin to explain to that woman that I am listening to Freak Like Me by DojaCat in the kitchen, making gnocchi for the love of my life, hoping that when she gets home from work she’ll let me give her a back rub, and I’m truly the happiest I’ve ever been.
