Over the weekend, people asked me, "why are you selling this beautiful collection??" Collecting is my passion, and it's a very personal one. The vast majority of the things I've been showing are "rescues" from charity thrift shops like Goodwill and Salvation Army. Step one is scouring through all the crap until I find a thing that speaks to me, and that thing is often disguised by a layer of dirt. I look for signs of quality in its shape and heft and detail. Second step is taking it home to clean and restore, using an arsenal of products and tools and techniques I've gathered over the years. Third is researching if I'm not already familiar. The detective work is so much fun, and I love to learn about designers and makers and styles. The last step is putting it back out in the world, renewed, and into hands that will love it. I do that partly because I don't have the space, but mainly because I don't really need to hold onto it for so long. The real pleasure for me is giving it new life and then letting it go. And that's why I'm selling this beautiful collection. #thewellbegunhome
