So I was talking to a friend and I had a lot of feelings about CACW suddenly (or I should say more feelings than usual because I always have a lot of feelings about CW but whatever) so I want to bring up this possibility (I would also like to point out that this is looking purely at what happens/what we see in the MCU movies, not about what we speculate happened off-screen, in between movies, or in headcanons):

The “So was I” line, to me, is not heartbreaking and tragic because Tony and Steve were once friends and then had a huge fight/falling out and now they aren’t friends anymore.

The “So was I” line is heartbreaking because it’s Tony realizing something very important about his relationship with Steve that he hadn’t considered.

Steve was Tony’s friend.

But Tony was Steve’s teammate. There’s a difference.
