āYou canāt love someone until you love yourselfā is definitely something most people agree isnāt true, but I think we should amend it.
āYou shouldnāt love someone until you love yourselfā is a much better phrase to go by. Can you love someone totally and fully without also loving yourself? Sure. But donāt because it will feel so much better when you are also in love with you. Letās say I asked the guy who Iām dating why he loves me and before he said anything I already had 10 things in my head I thought he might say. Why? Because I LOVE ME. I love the way I dance in the car. I love that my favorite band is Bowling For Soup even though I only like one of their albums. I love that I cry at emotionsal commercials. I love that I skip ahead in books because I enjoy knowing the ending before I read the story. I love the Monroe mole on my face.
And when you love yourself, really love yourself, itās so much harder to have someone take advantage of your worth. Itās harder to sacrifice parts of yourself to be loved, because you are too busy loving all of those parts.
I think the bottom of the thing is, āYou canāt sustain a healthy emotional relationship with someone unless you love yourself.ā
Because if you donāt, you will always question why that other person loves you, since, to yourself, you seem unlovable. And that insecurity will poison any familial or romantic relationship, even friendships.
And thereās also the angle that youāll be taken advantage of, as you said, because youāll be willing to roll over completely for the tiniest scrap of affection - on the other hand, this also means putting the responsibility for your emotional wellbeing on another person - which - also isnāt great.
I also think itās important to remember that everyone is sort of on a path to loving themselves. Itās not black and white, like there are only two options - either you love yourself or you donāt. There will be days where you feel really good about yourself and others where you donāt. There will be days where you might not love yourself, but you are sort of content with yourself, if that makes sense. And there will be times when youāre feeling down about your looks, or your talents, or when you make bad choices. I think the key is to ask whether underneath the day to day feeling of ālovingā yourself there is something else you rely on for your strength. Itās not healthy when you feel unlovable to latch on to the nearest emotional tether, in the form of another human being, and to put all of your self-worth on them. It is healthy to remind yourself that you have inherent worth regardless of how you feel that day, to have experienced loving yourself in the absence of another person so that you can remember that feeling and expect to feel it again, to demand respect from your partner and learn to recognize if they are taking advantage of your temporary self-doubt, to understand that this is a journey and theyāre traveling with you.
