Soldier. Pilot. Father.
In honor of May the 4th, I’m posting a little something of Tech and Racer. I like to think Tech and Phee bring their son everywhere, even on missions. Tech is usually the one who carries him. Racer enjoys every minute of their adventures :)
I kind of gave up on the shading after awhile, but I still like how this turned out.
OMG QKCOQMDIWKOCWLKXLAKX
TBB spoilers under the cut:
I think that it’s really interesting to look at Hunter’s personality in TCW vs TBB because it really drives home the fact that he’s a perfectionist who does best in familiar situations and who does not like change. In TCW, we see Hunter in his element as the sergeant of a (complete and intact) squad known for its 100% success rate. The mission to retrieve Echo is a fairly routine one that Hunter (correctly) assumes will be successful, so he shows off and acts cocky and playful the entire time.
Now let’s fast-forward to TBB. The Clone Wars are over, the fascist Empire has replaced the Republic, Crosshair has left the squad, and the rest of them have decided to desert with a child in their care. Hunter is now completely and utterly out of his element, and it’s clear that a lot of his confidence is gone. He no longer acts so much like a playful, cocky, frat boy so much as he does a tired, middle-aged father. He’s no longer in the routine of going on missions assigned by the GAR, succeeding, returning home, and doing it all over again. His routine has been disrupted, and he has been made aware of very real danger that his squad and daughter can face at the hands of the Empire. Hunter avoids tackling any problem that he is not confident he can solve and is hyper-aware of any and all risks. With every failure, Hunter shuts down more and retreats further.
I have no doubt that Hunter’s sense of self-worth hinges on his ability to successfully command his squad and complete missions. His status as a “freak” and outsider growing up likely made him obsessed with proving himself worthy so that he had a record of all of his successful missions to rub in the faces of of his nay-sayers. Hunter is basically a walking, talking personification of Gifted Kid Burnout and I love him so much.
TBB 1x2 and 1x3 Random Thoughts
Finally got round to watching some more episodes of TBB!
(I know it's been like a month...)
I have a couple of points that I think I can dig into though! Exams are gonna get in the way of things, but if the analysis isn't up tomorrow, it will be up by the end of the week.
Until then, enjoy some random notes I took watching 1x2 and 1x3 ❤️

...my zoology brain kicked in
Also, I thought @saturn-sends-hugs would appreciate this one I had jotted down 👇
Feeling some emotions regarding them
Tech: You’re the love of my life and my best friend, I would do anything for you.
Phee: I want you to eat three meals a day and have a decent sleep schedule.
Tech: Absolutely not.
Had to draw this one out quickly
I just found out that the rest of my family (besides my sister, who's as big a fan as I am) has just started watching The Bad Batch, and I'm just like.
Yes.
Good.
Join us at the space dads and emotional devastation table. Mwahaha.
I'm trying so hard to get my sister into it! She convinced me to watch Mando, and I know she would love The Bad Batch if she only gave it a chance.
If she likes Mando she probably would! It's a different kind of show, but the space dad vibes are still there and there are more of them.
I've been trying to get my family to watch since about episode one, and my dad and brother have been more or less interested the whole time, but my mom, who's the biggest Star Wars fan I have ever met, just couldn't be bothered. And since they tend to watch tv together, none of them ever got past episode one. But I guess she's giving it another chance!
That's great you whole family is starting to watch it now! I hope they love it. Is your mom's resistance because it is animated?
My sister has never seen Clone Wars, and I think that is the biggest barrier for her. She has no idea who the clones are any why their story matters. I got her to watch two episodes and she liked it, but I'm not sure if she will continue.
Tech walking into the kitchen: Is something burning?
Phee, leaning seductively against the table: Just my love for you, brown eyes
Tech: the oven is on fire
Weird ass Tech is alive theory I'd not considered until now: he might be wanting everyone to think he's dead so he can successfully infiltrate Mt. Tantiss in some way which wouldn't be possible if anyone thought he was alive. In other words, he Plan 99'd in a way that would leave everyone, even his family, thinking he was dead, on purpose.
At the point in the episode when he opts to shoot out the railcar, they've already blown their chance to track Hemlock. They've also tipped their hand about being alive, about poking around whatever the Empire is up to, etc. In other words they have NOTHING going for them now.
But if Tech is presumed 'dead', he can skulk around on Eriadu, use Tarkin's base as a route into Tantiss. He can't do this with anyone thinking he's alive. Hemlock is probably suspicious; Tarkin has been so dismissive of clone capabilities I expect he's not. So if Tech can pretend to be dead and infiltrate the base in a more legit fashion, he can possibly get himself to Tantiss from the inside, and THEN signal everyone.
I don't know if this works in a general sense but I do like it for bonus points of everyone losing their fucking minds at him when this happens:
'of course I wasn't dead. but I needed you to think I was.'
'you...what.'
'you needed to all think I was dead so the Empire would. Sorry about that.'
'we're gonna need to mourn you all over again when we kill you for real WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO US??????????'
which would be fun! and zany enough it could be a show thing. Anyways, there is another comedy idea to roll with: tech takes the opportunity to fake his own death in true Ludicrous Tech Plan fashion so he can find Mt. Tantiss.
What I like in this theory too is that it could bring us back to the Crossing in an interesting way - Omega and Tech gained a little more understanding of each other but the gulf between their understandings of the world can't be completely bridged in one conversation. He's still thinking strategically and with the assumption that the batch can adapt in his absence and will understand his logic when he comes back.
And for the most part they do! The batch is A LITTLE mad but they accept it. Omega though is going to see him, have a breakdown, find out he did it on purpose and hit the biggest rage point she has ever felt in her life because SHE THOUGHT HE UNDERSTOOD THAT SHE COULDN'T LOSE HER FAMILY LIKE THAT.
Plus it is a recurring issue that they make decisions and don't tell her - they didn't tell her when they tried to send her away with Cut, they didn't tell her that Echo was going to leave until it happened. And now Tech full on PRETENDED TO DIE and didn't tell her.
It seems like one of the longshot options but it DOES have some narrative precedence.
You know I hadn't thought of that and like, now I feel like this is more of a legit possibility. Another thing is, being severely injured somehow will help him hide; he'll get overlooked. So his life as a soldier can't continue, but he can still be a spy.
Which as you said is a thread from the word go: Tech just Makes Decisions, doesn't always bother to actually check with anyone. They're usually good and correct ones, so they cope with their elevated blood pressure. And in this case he's the only one in real risk of dying from the decision in question and has no time to explain it anyways so why wouldn't he just do it?
And the squad would get it, they'd be angry and give him shit about it for like 20 years but you know, that's not new. I'll be honest, I think even Phee would be like 'ugh and I like him on purpose, this is what being into men gets you'; she's an adult, she's been around.
But Omega?? She would be maaaaaad as heeeeeeeeeeeeeeell and it'd be such a wake up call the conversation that ensues.
Not sure I *want* this but I wouldn't mind if they went that way. Extra credit if he shows back up by like, shooting down a bunch of ships chasing them and says, 'Are you letting Wrecker fly the ship? Hunter that's ridiculous it should be you.'
Tech: she will understand that it was for the best of course, she has adapted before.
Omega, who just spent two months with nobody but a clinically depressed Crosshair for company: *is literally inventing new curse words as he speaks for the epic breakdown she is about to have*
Also I love tech just showing up to save their asses and lecture them on their flying without even a hi 😭 man has priorities.
I love the visual of Omega coming to a rapid boil.
Crosshair is in line to scream about it next.
Hunter is watching, satisfied that they can handle most of the 'how fucking dare yous'.
Okay, I love all of this, especially because it is in character and because Omega would be so angry, and rightfully so. But it could also be interesting if Tech didn't decide he was going to use being dead as cover until after he'd shot the connection hinge and started falling. He would have had to fake getting knocked off the car by the explosion, hooking his rappelling line into the window slats, and then somewhat purposefully put the rest of his family in a situation where they almost died and just barely escaped at the last second because he let himself fall for that to have been his plan the whole time, and even though I think he absolutely could do that, I'm not sure he would. Once he's falling, though? I could absolutely see him thinking that since everyone's going to think he's dead anyway, he may as well use it to his advantage. And then he just doesn't comm them to let them know he survived, because that way he can sneak around doing exactly what you've both said.
(Or, wild crack theory that just occurred to me--he did comm them, as badly injured as he probably is, while Omega was blacked out, and told Hunter at least that he's alive but needs to be presumed dead for what he wants to do next to work. And Hunter just kind of has to play along with it.)
I just found out that the rest of my family (besides my sister, who's as big a fan as I am) has just started watching The Bad Batch, and I'm just like.
Yes.

Me six months ago: *reaction to seeing romantic couples in either canon or canon is typically, "Aw, they're cute!" and moving on, actively disinterested in active shipping, interprets relationships as platonic first and romantic third or fourth* What, Milo and Kida? Nah, they're not romantically together at the end of the Atlantis movie; they have a really profound friendship. Its very sweet.
Me now: *giggling and kicking my feet every time I see cute Pheetech fanart* Listen, Tech and Phee WILL see each other again, they NEED to be space married by the end of the show, the Han/Leia parallels are there and they're both sort of Han and both sort of Leia and they're weirdly perfect for each other, I need them to have romantic pirate adventures. Yeah, I'm still trying to work out how I got here.
I’m rewatching certain scenes of the TBB arc in TCW for gif purposes and absolutely losing my mind
Hunter was such a frat boy 😂😂😂
I’m still convinced that at least half of their collective behavior in that arc is an act–they’re not used to working with regs, so they’re going to put on a show and make it seem like they’re so much cooler than they are.
But I also love the idea that they’re relatively young, especially compared to Rex.
AND the idea that adopting Omega immediately aged all of them at least ten years.
how dare you hide this in the tags
But also yes?? I rewatched those episodes recently and Hunter is so unnecessarily extra in that introductory scene, you just know he was telling them to ‘play it cool’ before they got off the ship because he doesn’t want to embarrass himself in front of Cody’s friends.
If you’re a younger sibling you know that feeling perfectly.
I will make it my life’s work to dig up the tags from now on…
And yes this did happen XD
y’all are making me sad we didn’t get more of the boys during the war 😩 I NEED to see their shenanigans, especially after Echo joined. just Echo sloooowly realizing he ended up joining a squad somehow more chaotic than the 501st LOL
All of this 🤣
