HC Discussion Time: Turian Flirting

So I rewatched the Garrus romance yesterday and the „your waist looks very supportive“ kinda got me this time. In most fics, Garrus gets mesmerized by Shep‘s narrow waist, but if he compliments her waist for being supportive, that would mean that turian females with less narrow/ sturdier waists would be considered sexy… right?

Then I went on to watch a BBC documentary about birds of paradise (narrated by Sir David Attenborough because he‘s the best) and got incredibly amused by the colourful ways the male birds strut their stuff, and suddenly I was like „Hey, let‘s write myself a HC about turian flirting and mating displays!“

Most of these won‘t appear sexy to the average human, but hey, not everything has to be anthropocentric ;)

Attracting Attention:

males:

- Tilting head left and right, showing off length and shape of fringe (maybe accompanied by chirps or the like, to draw attention to themselves)

- Bobbing the head, making light reflect off plates at various angles

- mandibles held low to show off tooth gap (also to intimidate other males)

- staring down prospective mate

- stalking/strutting around, showing off flashy clothes

- posing, lingering in certain poses a little too long

- puffing up to appear bigger

- showing off width of shoulders, curve of carapace and narrowness of waist by rotating torso

- bracing hands on hip to guide line of sight to hip spurs

- standing with legs apart to show off thigh gap

females:

- flaunting length of neck by turning head left and right, or arching neck down

- displaying throat (submissive? depends on individual)

- showing off length of mandibles

- dressing in straight-cut clothes („supportive waist“ = less narrow is supposed to be sexy)

- slow movements, checking out the males

- puffing up to appear bigger

- staring down prospective mate

- bracing hands on hips to guide line of sight to hip spurs

- standing with legs apart to show off thigh gap

Both genders show extensive use of subvocals to tease each other and show interest, accompanied by low growls or similar noises, this may sound aggressive or intimidating to other species

During talk/ when flirting:

- continuation of showing off attractive features (neck, fringe, teeth)

- fleeting touches to waist

- nuzzles to shoulder/ neck

- clicking/ tapping of talons on counter or arm plates

- mandible clacking/ twitching

- rubbing of leg spurs agains other‘s leg

Stellar parallax

In astronomy, parallax is the difference in the apparent position of an object seen by observers in different places. Stellar parallax is used to measure the distance of stars using the motion of the Earth in its orbit. Created by the different orbital positions of Earth, the extremely small observed shift is largest at time intervals of about six months, when Earth arrives at exactly opposite sides of the Sun in its orbit, giving a baseline distance of about two astronomical units between observations. The parallax itself is considered to be half of this maximum, about equivalent to the observational shift that would occur due to the different positions of Earth and the Sun, a baseline of one astronomical unit (AU).

Stellar parallax is so difficult to detect that its existence was the subject of much debate in astronomy for thousands of years. It was first observed by Giuseppe Calandrelli who reported parallax in α-Lyrae in his work “Osservazione e riflessione sulla parallasse annua dall’alfa della Lira”. Then in 1838 Friedrich Bessel made the first successful parallax measurement ever, for the star 61 Cygni, using a Fraunhofer heliometer at Königsberg Observatory. 

Once a star’s parallax is known, its distance from Earth can be computed trigonometrically. But the more distant an object is, the smaller its parallax. Even with 21st-century techniques in astrometry, the limits of accurate measurement make distances farther away than about 100 parsecs (roughly 326 light years) too approximate to be useful when obtained by this technique. This limits the applicability of parallax as a measurement of distance to objects that are relatively close on a galactic scale. Other techniques, such as spectral red-shift, are required to measure the distance of more remote objects.
