Feeling lightheaded, Raphael steadied himself by holding onto Caz. Not at forcefully as before, he was dizzy but not still concerned about the nurse fleeing.

“It should have , it takes seconds to kick in. Maybe minutes for a chunk out of my torso like this.” The pain wasn’t easy to ignore but he was doing his best. “Nothing makes sense. Sometimes it’s slower to fully heal if the damage is bad but it’s never just not even started.” Raphael was scared an that fear came out as frustration.

He grabbed the bags of blood before reminding himself that he was actively trying to not scare his helper. “Thank you, Caz.” Raphael managed to say hurriedly before sinking his teeth in. He didn’t drink so viciously or messily this time, the hunger and need were great but he had better control of himself this time.

“I…I think…I need. I need to call a warlock. Meanwhile, can you…treatment me like a human? It probably wont fix but worth trying til magic can be used. Just. Just. Try to stop the bleed, stitch me up or whatever you do here now? Not seen a doctor for a lifetime, literally.” He was still light headed, he had to be to be to laugh about doctors.

He drank from the second bag now, drinking more greedily. He was still bleeding profusely, losing blood even as he drank. Raphael was so fucking scared and had nothing but a stranger mundane to hold on to.

Caz nodded at Raphael’s answer. It made sense, that was what he had expected from a vampire. That was what the stories said anyway. It wasn’t like he knew so much about all the legends and there were so many… but all vampires were immortal and practically unstoppable, right?

The nurse still didn’t feel safe with this man, but he hoped that as long as he was trying to help, Raphael wouldn’t hurt him. The vampire still looked as if he came straight out of a horror movie, luckily Caz didn’t mind seeing blood. He glanced up towards Raphael. “Of course there are warlocks.” He sighed then as he nodded and started working.

“I don’t think there is much stopping to the bleeding honestly.” He managed to say then as he glanced up towards the vampire. “I’m sorry but… maybe you should ask your friend to come here instead of you going there. It’s late, there aren’t many people wandering the halls. I can go and get them at the doors and bring them here.”

Raphael swayed as he tried to stay sat up, loosely holding onto the nurse. He felt sick, a nasty sensation he hadn't felt since the last time he'd come down from the high of Isabelle's blood.

"If Catarina works here, she's the best healer. Catarina Loss, can you find out?" His body was starting to tremble now so, worried that he might lose consciousness, Raphael spoke quicker. "There's a cell phone in my jacket. If I can't, you'll have to call her or Magnus Bane. They have the best chance at knowing what this is." For a moment he forgot to control his strength as he gripped the nurse's bicep. "Please do this, I don't..I don't want to die." He hated that he sounded like a sacred child but, in a way, perhaps he still was one even after 80 years. "And thank you."

The trembling getting worse, the release the intense grip on Caz's arm and flopped back heavily onto the examination table

“That would be lovely,” Cassandra smiled brightly at him, though her smile falter somewhat at the reference to her clothing. She really was reasonably covered by modern standards, the colours and patterns were cute and made her synesthesia react in beautiful and happy ways.

Wrapping her arms around herself self-consciously, she said “The ambush story certainly explains my lack of clothes to change in to as well.” Mostly her shift of focus back onto the details of her cover story was to avoid wondering what Tristan thought of her for the way she was dressed. He was a chivalrous knight, all the stories said so, which meant she was sure he wouldn’t voice any judgements but it was human nature to make them…

“You’re being very kind.” She settled for saying as she tried to hide her embarrassmet. As they journeyed to where suitable guest quarters could be found, all the while Cassandra had tried to see if anything else modern or out of place was in the castle but no such luck.

Cassandra’s clothes were clearly not what was worn in Camelot, or in the realm for that matter. While Tristan understood magic a little more than the average inhabitant of Camelot and surrounding villagers, it wouldn’t do Cassandra much good to insist on it to him. He would tell Arthur about her when the king had returned. He would know what to do. Until then he would keep the young woman safe, like was his duty.

“Indeed. Some people will ask you questions about it. I will vouche for you.” Tristan answered. Once they were in a more quiet part of the castle he began to look about the doors and then finally opened a smaller one. “This is one of the rooms always prepared for guests.” He said as he gestured for Cassandra to go in.

“Of course, lady Cassandra. Please consider yourself as Arthur’s guest until we know how to find a way for you to go back home. Shall I send for some of the women to help you?”

Women to help her would be a good idea, yes. She wasn't exactly up to date on Camelot fashion or historical dress. That intersection of history and art was Jake's domain not hers.

"Please, I need all the help I can get." Cassie agreed, in the doorway of the room. Once again she was filled with gratitude that she had literally fallen into the arms of the kindest knight.

Impulsively, Cassandra came forward and hugged Tristan. She was a hugger, it was a thing but it was only as she was doing it that she remembered the time period they were in.

Pulling back immediately, she was mortified and her face flushing pink as she apologised "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cross a line. So sorry. I'll just go wait quietly in here.

Hurrying into the room she sad once more "Sorry." and then "Thank you." Before closing the door between them hastily

Christopher agreed with Jason about the rebuilding

“That’s why I took them, so maybe if I dream bout it again then I can remember how things are now.”

Eddie found himself staring for a moment, startled, before inclining his head towards Jason and half joking, half admitting “I have no idea how I’m managing to raise such an open and emotionally healthy child.”

He loved how Christopher would share every thought and feeling, recently he’d been keeping things from Eddie and afraid to hurt Eddie. It had been breaking his heart but, they’d been working together and with a therapist to help coax back the bubbly boy who was in front of them now.

Pizza in mouth, Christopher then claimed “Tsunamis aren’t that big of a deal really.” Making Eddie choke with laughter at his son’s statement.

“Kid’s say the darnedest things.” He managed to say to Jason as Christopher brightly told them it was because Buck had been there to save him. That Buck was his second favourite hero to Robin.

Eddie looked around happily. He’d needed this, sure it wasn’t exactly like when he and Christopher had pizza time with Buck but to have time out from stresses and worries and see his kid laughing? Pushing that little car he’d been given around the table and just, well, being a happy kid? Christopher was the light of his fucking life and he wouldn’t be surprised if it was written all over him for Jason to see.

Jason grinned as he watched Eddie and Christopher interact. It was clear that the two of them had a strong bond, and it was heartwarming to see. He had never really been around kids before, but he found himself enjoying Christopher’s company more and more.

“He’s a smart kid,” Jason said with a chuckle as Christopher made his comment about tsunamis. “And brave too, to have a hero like Buck to look up to.”

He took a sip of his drink and looked around the room, feeling a sense of contentment. It was rare for him to feel this relaxed and at ease, but being around Eddie and Christopher seemed to have that effect on him. It was a nice change of pace from the usual chaos of his life.

“I’m glad we could all hang out like this,” he said sincerely. “It’s been a while since I’ve had a good pizza night.” Jason listened to Eddie and Christopher with a smile, happy to see them enjoying themselves. It reminded him of simpler times, before he became a vigilante and got caught up in the craziness of the superhero world.

He was content with just being a regular guy, without all the attention and expectations that came with being a member of the Bat-family. Bruce and Dick were always in the spotlight, but Jason preferred to stay out of it. He enjoyed spending time with people like Eddie and Christopher, who were just living their lives and trying to be happy. It was a nice change of pace from the usual chaos of his own life.

Eddie was watching how many slices he had and what he drank, he wanted to be at his best for tonight's fight with so much money riding on him.

Listening to his kid happily recount stories to Jason, who was playing the rapt audience better than most did with young kids, had his heart feeling full. Since the car accident, the bombing and everything else he'd found it hard to smile and laugh but seeing his kid thriving and being so open with every thought in his head again, that was good. Christopher was nothing like him, that was even better.

When Jason said he was enjoying himself, Chris responded before Eddie could "We could do it more! Our place isn't fancy like this but we have abuela's tamales and those are the best. Do you like tamales?"

Eddie was pretty sure he looked panicked as Christopher offered the invite without permission. After all, there was still a chance Jason was waiting out his time to mess with things later. Try to beat up Eddie himself or something. Or, he was a bored rich kid and this was a fun way to kill an evening.

"I'm sure Jason is very busy Chris, and remember Dad makes invites to dinner not you. You're not the one cooking."

"But Dad, if you cook he'll never want to come again anyway."

There is was again, out-sassed by his own child. "That wasn't nice or funny, Chris." He then glance at Jason, smile somewhat sheepish "Sorry about that, man."

Eddie let Christopher take his phone, to take photos and play with. Christopher was pretty responsible so he barely thought twice about it.

Smiling to himself, he half listened as Christopher enthused about the apartment, the parts of the city they could now see and everything else.

Eddie chuckled at Jason’s reply, this was the reason why the 118 rew had taken to him. Plenty of out of touch rich pricks in the world, at least Todd gave back with his time and seemed more grounded than most. For the most part.

“You don’t have to.” Was his automatic response as Chris was offered to pick one, though he smiled with pride that Chris thanked Jason twice. Yeah, his kid was a good one. Chris picked a small red one, red to match his sticks he told them before starting to enthuse about the make and model.

“Such a boy.” Eddie grinned fondly, ruffling Christopher’s hair. Jason was surprisingly good with Christopher, something that wasn’t always the case. So many became awkward trying to have a conversation with the average 8 year old, after all.

“Thanks for this.” A free toy, a free meal, it was all probably nothing to Jason but to a paycheck to paycheck family it was a kindness. One he hadn’t expected after the way Jason had gone off at him over tonight’s fight.

Pizza was good carb for him ahead of the fight, nothing too heavy for him, and a cool activity to get Chris involved with. Chris, who was already saying that pepperoni was the BEST of the pizzas and what job could he have in the making?

Eddie took a seat at the island to watch, swiping his phone screen to check out the photos Chris had taken. His smile faltered. “Why you take these?”

Photos of the pier and surrounding area which was still in the rebuilding phase “Christopher was on the pier when that tsunami hit a few months back.” Because this was Gotham there had been plenty of rumours that it hadn’t been a naturally occurring one. Eddie hadn’t cared, he’d been focusing on his kid having watery nightmares.

Jason couldn’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction as he watched Christopher pick out a toy car from the selection. The boy’s enthusiasm was contagious, and Jason was glad he could make even a small difference in someone’s day.

As they settled in to eat their pizza, Jason found himself enjoying the simple pleasure of spending time with a family. Eddie seemed like a decent guy, and Christopher was a bright, curious kid. Jason couldn’t help but feel a twinge of envy. He’d never had that kind of stability growing up.

But when Eddie showed him the photos that Christopher had taken, Jason’s mood shifted. The pier and surrounding area were still in the rebuilding phase after the tsunami that had hit a few months back. Eddie explained that Christopher had been there when it happened, and Jason felt a pang of sadness for the boy. He couldn’t imagine the trauma that must have caused.

“Man, that’s rough,” Jason said, shaking his head. “But hey, at least the pier’s getting rebuilt, right? Maybe it’ll be even better than before.” He tried to sound optimistic, but he knew that things were never that simple in Gotham. The city had a way of tearing things down just as quickly as they were built up.

Despite the dark turn the conversation had taken, Jason found himself enjoying the company of Eddie and Christopher. It was nice to be around people who weren’t criminals or vigilantes for once. As they finished their pizza and headed out, Jason couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the simple pleasures in life.

As Eddie had helped Christopher out of the car, he’d quietly said in Spanish “Best behaviour, ok?” Not because he doubted his son, just a parental reminder. Rich buildings tended to make Eddie tense, guys like him only ever usually entered on the job.

Chris agreed brightly, clearly bursting at the seams with excitement at the prospect of going to “Robin”’s house for dinner. Christopher walked ahead of them with his sticks, maybe a pace and a half ahead. As interested in the building as he seemed he was also clearly listening in as he followed Jason’s directions to the letter and fell behind him when prompted.

The view they were greeted with was impressive but Christopher’s response was as open and ready to be shared with the world as every other part of his wonderful kid. He shot across to the huge window, pointing out this or that building excitedly.

Eddie was impressed, sure it was a damn nice view in the late afternoon sun but he also found himself wondering how many children’s medical debt could be covered by the extravagant waste of cash.

“You certainly know how to spend your father’s money,” It could have been a bitchy comment but it was paired with a grin and a tone that was a lot more ‘shit talking with the guys over a beer’

Jason watched as Eddie and Christopher arrived, noticing the apprehension in Eddie’s eyes as he scanned the opulent building. He could relate, having spent most of his childhood homeless and used to having nothing. He greeted them with a warm smile, happy to see Christopher’s excitement at being in “Robin’s” house for dinner.

As Christopher explored the impressive view, Jason couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt at the extravagant waste of cash that surrounded them. He knew what it was like to struggle to make ends meet, and he hated that he was a part of that world now.

Eddie’s comment about spending his father’s money could have been taken as a dig, but the playful tone made it clear that he was just teasing. “I prefer to think of it as putting it to good use,” Jason replied with a smirk, gesturing towards his small collection he knew Eddie would love, his eyes flickering towards the miniature motorcycles and cars that decorated the walls and cases. He had collected them over the years from happy meal boxes, cereal boxes, and the internet, a small reminder of the simpler things in life

“Take one, buddy. Which one do you like the most?” He invite dthe kid.

He led them into the kitchen, where he was getting ready to bake a homemade pizza. The room was spacious and modern, with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. There was a large island in the center of the room, where Jason had laid out all the ingredients for the pizza.“I hope you like pepperoni,” Jason said with a grin as he started to spread the tomato sauce over the pizza dough. He had always enjoyed cooking, finding it to be a relaxing and creative outlet. And he had to admit, it was nice to be able to share his love of food with others.

Eliot, for his part, had been looking out in the club where Sophie was with their mark. Ever ready to intervene if and when necessary.

He kept his eyes on her as he replied, "Still can, think I'd let anyone else come up like that?" Eliot did his best to know his surroundings and exits, know when people were approaching him. If he didn't, he'd have been long dead.

Hearing Finn's voice again, yeah it still did things to him even after all this time. Time that had changed Eliot over and over. He'd gotten his hands dirty in the army but he'd sunk his lowest after it. The things he was trying to atone for, those things hadn't tainted the Eliot that Finn knew. To be that man again, the one Finn had loved...

But he was dead. Eliot had killed him along with so many others.

In a move that looked like he was brushing his hair back, he removed the two way earbud and then slipped it into his pocket. The others didn't need to hear this.

"Ain't my kinda place and you know it. Gimme good food, good beer and a poker game any night of the week." It wasn't to say he hadn't gone clubbing, for fun as well as for work, but Eliot was happy in the good ol' southern boy stereotype too.

Finally, he turned to look Finn square in the face. Shit, he looked good. That just wasn't playing fair. "Security. Get to use that right hook of yours much?"

Finn wondered if Eliot was working, since he didn't take his eyes off someone else in the room. It would just be something for the other man too, coming into a club just for work. It would suit him best, Finn thought. When their eyes met after a few more minutes, the ex soldier let out a soft breath. While a few years might have passed, Eliot's eyes were still that same beautiful hue. Damn him.

"Right. That hasn't changed then." He answered in what he hoped was a neutral voice. He didn't want to ask why Eliot was here because he knew that he wouldn't get the truth. A small smile found its way to Finn's lips at the question.

"It's a job, pays the bills." He shrugged in answer. "Usually the clients are good enough. You're out on a job too, aren't you?" He shook his head before Eliot could say something. "It's fine, I don't need to know. I have to get back to it... don't be a stranger if you stay in town for a while, ok?"

Being...dismissed like that unsettled Eliot. What did Finn know, or think he knew, about Eliot to pull away so fast.

"It ain't." He started and then stopped, this wasn't what he wanted to be talking to Finn about. Finn was a piece of him, of his past, that had remained largely untouched by what had followed. Or so he'd thought.

"I'm just looking out for a friend." He said simply, it wasn't a lie and it was the closest thing to the truth that he could get.

Glancing over the room again, Sophie was holding her own as usual. Brianna was using the role of DJ as a cover to hack into devices an gather info. It all looked, so far, according to plan.

He made a point to look back to Finn and lock eyes with him. Vulnerability didn't come naturally to him, not anymore, but it was important for him to show Finn that he meant this. "If I can swing by, I will." I want to, I shouldn't and I don't deserve it but my God do I want to. "And if you need someone to have your back tonight, you can still count on me." Somehow, the idea of trading blows with Finn fighting as his side like old times was a bigger pull to him than anything else.

Eddie had been just about to turn into the diner when Jason blindsided him again with the offer. Somehow Eddie buying a rich dude dinner as a thank you was now the rich dude offering to cook. Not really knowing Jason beyond shooting the breeze and being cautious by nature did mean Eddie gave a barely noticeable pause but, this was someone Bobby and Hen had introduced to him. If they trusted Jason, Eddie would too until he gave reason not to. “Sure, sounds fun. Right Chris?” Chris was more than a little excited at the idea of have dinner cooked by Robin. “Well, you can’t back out now.” Eddie flashed a grin at Jason as his son chatted away happily. Motioning to the GPS, he silently invited Jason to put his address in.

“So, do you get the urge to cook for all the firefighters or just the dumbass ones?” He joked

“It’s always nice to have someone to talk to,” Jason stated with a small smile as he deftly entered his address into the GPS. The sleek device beeped obediently, calculating the quickest route to his destination. His loft was nestled in the heart of the bustling business district, where the hum of the city’s daily grind drowned out any notion of peace and quiet. Yet, despite the constant buzz of activity, Jason’s building was devoid of any other residences.

A muted sense of privacy enveloped the area, as if the chaotic energy of the city was repelled by the simplicity of his abode. People passed him by with robotic focus, their minds consumed with the singular goal of reaching their destination on time. No one seemed to take notice of Jason as he slipped in and out of his sanctuary. It was perfect.

As he pulled up to his building, Jason pressed a discreet button, and the garage door slid open soundlessly. He deftly maneuvered his car inside and parked it with ease. He led his guests, Chris and Eddie, to a private elevator and hit the button for the top floor.

“I promise you’ll love the view,” Jason said, a sense of anticipation in his voice as he gestured towards the doors of the elevator. As they slid open, he looked at Chris and Eddie, eager to see their reaction to the breathtaking sight that awaited them.

“So, perhaps I didn’t travel alone but some trouble happened and I arrived alone and without drawing attention. To explain why no one say your relative arriving.” Cassandra nodded a little, continuing on from his thought. “I’ll try to not seem too smart in conversation with others.” Which, she wasn’t sure quite how to temper. She’d never fully managed it at school after all, one of the many reasons she’d been an outsider that never actually completed high school. Before the Library, being smart and having a broken brain had been desperately hard. Now, she had seemingly time traveled and whilst uncertain, she wasn’t afraid. She wasn’t the same girl as back then.

Picking up the cup, she stood to take the arm that Tristan’s offered arm graciously. Cassndra certainly wasn’t used to this sort of chivalry but liked it all the same.

“I’m not too tired but I understand, I’m sure you’re a busy man. I’ll make sure I keep our cover story and don’t, you know, shame your family name or anything.” A joke but a joke that reveal a tiny piece of her own family dramas. “Thank you again, you are a true gentleman Tristan. Just as Galahad always has been to me.”

“That is a very good way to explain how you’ve come to be here.” Tristan nodded with a smile, happy that Cassandra understood so quickly and she could keep herself safe. “Just try to be interested in what other women do around here and if you would like to help them out, just ask them. They’ll need some time to get to know you but I’m sure you’ll fit in.”

Tristan of course didn’t know much about Cassandra yet but she seemed more than friendly enough to get along well with others. The women working here at the castle were hard working but they weren’t unfriendly. They might need to warm up to Cassandra but when they noticed Tristan was her cousin, they’d be ok with her.

He walked with her through the large castle halls. “At the moment I’m not so busy since Arthur is away. Would you like a walk through the castle and the gardens instead? I’ll show you your room first… and I think a change of clothes will serve you regardless.”

Mostly her shift of focus back onto the details of her cover story was to avoid wondering what Tristan thought of her for the way she was dressed. He was a chivalrous knight, all the stories said so, which meant she was sure he wouldn't voice any judgements but it was human nature to make them...

Eddie’s eyes flicked from the road and he frown slightly, surprised by his son. Gently, not scolding but guiding, Eddie said “Chris, how do you feel when people push questions on you and touch your sticks?”

Christopher was silent for a moment before saying “Sorry Jason, I got too excited.”

Eddie smiled a little, his son was a good kid overall. Flicking his eyes to the passenger seat, he was appreciative that Jason seemed good with kids enough to not seem too bothered. Or that’s how it seemed, the guy wasn’t an easy read. Flicking the indicator, Eddie kept his eyes on traffic ready to turn into the parking lot of the diner. “Well, the engine’s running better than it has in months.” He commented to Jason, “So I guess you’ve earned you dinner.”

“It’s okay, Eddie,” Jason said reassuringly, brushing off the young boy’s innocent curiosity. “I’m okay with the questions. Just make sure you are familiar enough with someone before asking them, Chris, okay?” He tried to make the situation lighter, aware of the child’s innocence. Jason knew that his scar on his skull was intimidating, especially for a kid who had probably never seen anything like it before.

With his buzz cut, the scar was visible, something he usually hid under his hair. It was a hot summer in Gotham, and Jason didn’t mind showing it off.

“Did I earn my dinner?” he joked, turning to Eddie with a mischievous grin. “I fix the vehicles of your daddy and your friends at work so they can help people.” Jason paused to explain how he and Eddie’s father knew each other, making small talk to ease the tension.

Looking into Chris’ curious eyes, Jason decided to offer something more. “I don’t mind cooking for you guys. That’s one of my hobbies, you know?” he said, flashing a smile as they waited for Eddie to take them to their destination.

As they drove through the city, Jason couldn’t help but feel grateful for the kindness of Eddie’s family. Despite his past, he had found a community that accepted him, scars and all. And if cooking dinner for them was one way he could show his appreciation, he was more than happy to do it.

Eddie had been just about to turn into the diner when Jason blindsided him again with the offer. Somehow Eddie buying a rich dude dinner as a thank you was now the rich dude offering to cook. Not really knowing Jason beyond shooting the breeze and being cautious by nature did mean Eddie gave a barely noticeable pause but, this was someone Bobby and Hen had introduced to him. If they trusted Jason, Eddie would too until he gave reason not to. "Sure, sounds fun. Right Chris?" Chris was more than a little excited at the idea of have dinner cooked by Robin. "Well, you can't back out now." Eddie flashed a grin at Jason as his son chatted away happily. Motioning to the GPS, he silently invited Jason to put his address in.

"So, do you get the urge to cook for all the firefighters or just the dumbass ones?" He joked

Finn hadn't been working the door of the club that day or he would probably have recognised the man sitting at the bar sooner. The years had changed the both of them, Finn maybe a bit more drastically than Eliot. He'd never had stubble when he was in the army, not even on a mission which had Eliot joking on more than one occasion.

"You used to be able to recognise me from the corner of your eye. Or even without seeing me at all." Finn spoke up at the question as he neared the bar, leaning next to the man. "It's been a while, Eliot." And not the best while either for Finn, but Eliot probably wouldn't be aware of that part. He'd left the army before Finn did, before the hit.

Eliot looked good, he had to admit. "I never thought you'd become a club goer."

Eliot, for his part, had been looking out in the club where Sophie was with their mark. Ever ready to intervene if and when necessary.

But he was dead. Eliot had killed him along with so many others.

In a move that looked like he was brushing his hair back, he removed the two way earbud and then slipped it into his pocket. The others didn't need to hear this.

Finally, he turned to look Finn square in the face. Shit, he looked good. That just wasn't playing fair. "Security. Get to use that right hook of yours much?"

Seeing how good Jason was with Chris was heartwarming. Plenty of guys who didn’t have kids could be clueless with how to interact with them, and even the ones usually great with kids might get too fixated on Chris’s CP. Patronizing or pitying Chris which both the father and the son hated.

“Alright, you guys have your secrets.” Eddie humoured them, gesturing for Chris and Jason to join him in moving towards the car.

Before he moved anywhere, Chris looked to Jason with a solemn expression and raised a hand with his red crutch hanging from his elbow. “I promise I won’t tell anyone.” He told Jason sincerely before they made a move.

“I’m thinking we hit the diner, sound good Chris?” Chris cheered excitedly before telling Jason without hushing for Eddie’s expense. “Dad’s totally garbage at cooking. This is gonna be awesome.” “After, I’m going to be going out so you’ll be spending tonight with Tía Pepa, sound good?” Eddie rarely went out and Christopher knew that so generally got excited about the idea of his dad having a social life.

Christopher surprise him thought as he pulled a face, looking disappointed “Oh. I thought…never mind.”

Guilt flooded Eddie but there was no way he could change things now when everything was already in motion.

“Hey, I’m sorry mijo. Tomorrow we’ll have a special movie night, just you and me. You can pick what we order, how’s that sound?”

Christopher had looked put out and a little pouty but he broke into a brilliant smile easily and suggested excitedly. “Pizza?”

“Yeah, pizza sounds good to me too.” Eddie ruffled his kid’s hair affectionately. He loved Christopher more than anything in the world, sure maybe the fighting was stupid but everything was to try to find a way to stay sane for Chris. Provide for Chris. The anger and rage that had been boiling in him before, the relief from the beatings and the being beaten. The euphoria of winning every fight. He couldn’t take that shit home with him, couldn’t let his fucked-up-ness taint the safe place he’d made their home to be for his kid.

Eddie tried not to look at Jason, sure that the other man was probably judging him harshly again.

Jason quietly observed the exchange between the kid and his father as he sat in the car. A part of him wanted Eddie to be more intelligent because doing stupid things like fighting in an illegal fighting ring would bring stupid results. Yet, it was improbable Eddie understood with words. Eddie was begging to get his ass kicked by him. He restrained himself because of the kid, though. The last thing Jason wanted was for Christopher to see his father in the ER.

As they drove, the kid noticed one of Jason’s scars on his head; one of the remaining ones, Lazarus’ pit, didn’t disappear. He almost jumped from his seat when he felt the kid’s hands caressing it. Jason found it hard to talk about them because people usually asked questions he couldn’t answer. He often blamed contact sports, but the scar showed the injury was too severe. The kind of wounds that would have killed someone.

“Did you get that as Robin?” The kid asked, amused. “I did,” Jason replied, telling the boy the truth, knowing Eddie would think he was playing along with the kid.
