Was rewatching the 4x31 Obrimus Manor section for, you know. Reasons. And I just love how these three daisy-chain themselves back into danger.
Julien wouldn't have gone back in for Cyd, Teor, or Thimble, but he will for Occtis. Literally with no hesitation. Plenty of annoyance, but once it's obvious that Occtis isn't leaving yet, he immediately follows.
Occtis wouldn't have gone back in for Cyd or Teor, but he will for Thimble. Neither of them care about getting Mara out the way that Thimble does, so they're both willing to cart her right back into danger.
And Thimble isn't going to leave Teor and Cyd behind as long as there's a chance she might be able to save them (especially Teor).
So one PC making a strong character choice leads to two other PCs putting themselves into danger (and Laura is SO stressed by this).
The argument between Occtis and Julien is delicious. The way Julien pauses, like, ten full seconds before he comes up with an excuse for why he cares so much about trying to keep Occtis out of the manor. The way Julien smiles when Occtis says he's tired of pretending that he cares about Julien. Literally tension that you could cut with a knife.
It's wild. I mean, I've shipped Knightingale since the Overture, but I didn't really think it had any chance of happening in canon. After 4x31, I feel like Julien and Occtis are officially Being Weird About Each Other and there's maybe a genuine possibility here (Occtis saying in an earlier episode that "Julien is confusing" also kinda slots into the Weird About Each Other category).
I do think back to Julien, at one point, calling out Occtis's 'soft boy persona', so I wonder if part of what's going on here is that he feels like Occtis losing his temper at him is the 'real' Occtis behind the soft persona, and that makes him feel like he knows Occtis better now.
And then he sees Occtis lock up out of fear of his father, which is another thing that Julien can relate to on some level -- Raimond wasn't as awful as Primus and it's clear that there are some good memories in their past, but he did almost hit Julien in the Overture and only refrained because he was wearing his gauntlet. But that moment of panic would be another piece of the 'real Occtis' that Julien might add to his list that makes him feel like he understands Occtis better.
no one is happy about this situation

[ID: A digital illustration of Thimble and Occtis Tachonis from Critical Role. Big Thimble!! Strong Thimble!!
thimble and julien I will always be obsessed with your dynamic. Weâre 31 episodes in, only like 9 of those feature them at the same table but oh my god. like the fact that they both clearly donât really like each other but are so deeply similar. Theyâre both lethal and sarcastic and vengeful and very shallowly beneath all that theyâre so hurt and so lost in the world left in the wake of some of the worst things that couldâve happened to both of them. And the fact of that both of them share the loss of and desire to save the Golden Orchard. Like sure you hate each other but when you imagine your childhood you run through the same gardens.Â
And the part that makes me the most buckwild is probably that theyâve also been uncommonly kind to one another at points. Like Julien spitting on the body of her best friend, grabbing her wings, and then also telling her that Twigâs okay. And Thimble shitting on julien every chance she gets, reminding him he isnât her better and is a piece of shit, and then bringing him his fatherâs blade. Also thimble thanking julien and him yelling FUCK like itâs the worst thing thatâs ever happened to him. Oh seekers table v2 Iâm so excited to see how their dynamic evolves more.Â
Love how Occtis, Thimble, and Julien have essentially become a package deal at this point.
Like, Occtis and Thimble are obviously inseparable now.
Julien doesnât want to let Occtis out of his sight for uhhh strategic reasons (definitely only that)
And now Thimble wants to be around Julien just to keep pestering him about his shadow.
Sprinkle in a little bit of Occtis being like âGo away Julienâ and Julien being like âGo away Thimbleâ and itâs a very interesting group dynamic lol
whatever is going in between all the different relationships between Thimble, Occtis, and Julien, I am putting all of them in my pockets--
"I'm sick of you trying to kill me," Occtis says, as Julien continues to try to convince him to get away from Obrimus Manor so that Occtis survives.
"I'm tired of pretending that I give a shit about you," Occtis says, as Julien continues to put his hand on Occtis's back and his arms around Occtis's shoulders to comfort him.
"There's only two people in the world who care about me," Occtis says, as Julien is softer and gentler with Occtis than he's been with anyone but Aranessa so far.
"Just leave me here and go," Occtis says, as Julien stays.
occtis and julien will out loud confirm 'we don't care about each other' and then proceed to care about each other's survival. this too is the seekers bond.
I was pretty ambivalent about shipping in this campaign so far, but the emotional stalemate that Julien and Occtis are locked into is so juicy. Guy who obfuscates his caring for other people behind several layers of strategy and indifference bc he can't afford to care about anyone new right now vs Guy who is so used to being treated with indifference that he needs to be told explicitly and repeatedly that someone cares about him to believe it. Delicious.

it is SUCH a druid flex for Thaisha to call down lightning to strike right next to her when she's got a METAL staff and METAL beads in her hair and a METAL spine like that lightning is fully 100% concierge on tap on call on demand direct delivery to your FACE if you keep pissing her off even if you're under a forest of church steeples and weather vanes
It's all good, just let in box, just wants to get in box, box is good and nice, please let in box
