theo van gogh was the one who suggested that his older brother vincent start seriously painting. as soon as theo was gainfully employed he gave vincent around 15% of his own yearly salary for art supplies, lodging, and food. about 2/3rds of vincent's surviving letters were to theo (including vincent's earliest and last letters), all of which were found stored in theo's desk. theo's child, vincent willem, was born on january 31st, 1890, and vincent was so delighted by his nephew that he painted almond blossoms for him. vincent shot himself half a year later on july 29th, 1890. theo's distress at his brother's death worsened his syphilis symptoms and he died half a year after his brother on january 25th, 1891 (four days before vincent willem's first birthday). theo was reburied next to vincent in auvers-sur-oise at the request of theo's wife johanna.
Almond Blossoms, 1890, Vincent van Gogh
And that love lived on Theo's wife, Johanna, who was the one who pushed for the preservation of Vincent's paintings. Johanna who made sure that her husband's beloved brother would not be forgotten. Johanna who fought tooth and nail so that Theo and Vincent would never be forgotten. Johanna who carried the family legacy, who made sure that the works of Vincent would be kept in her possession. And then Vincent Willem, named for a uncle so loved, carried this legacy and founded the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam.
The van Gogh family history is deeply interwoven with love. It was the love of a brother that gave a young man the courage to paint and the resources to do so. It was the love of a woman for her husband and her husband's beloved brother that made that story known. And it was the love of a nephew, who was so deeply loved even if for such a short time, that made it possible for the world to know Vincent van Gogh.
Here's my personal summary of Obi-Wan and Anakins dynamic haha Obi Wan tries so hard.. but also.. he kinda doesnt :'D
Obi Wan loves Anakin because he can say the things he can't.
Just finished re-reading the Jedi Apprentice series, and I’m having so many feelings about it.
Obi-wan Kenobi is the sum of a man who resolved to survive in order to help others. If his survival did not help others, then he was willing to give his life if that would help.
He always was willing to give himself if required for the survival of others, but he understood deeply the need for defenders to actually survive to defend the defenseless.
He gives no purchase to fear, because it is not important. It is merely an obstacle to vault over. He has had much experience with fear and pushing through it.
He literally went, “I will not die if people are depending on me.” And so he did whatever needed to be done.
Qui-gon Jinn died with two people dependent on him, and Obi-wan literally went, “Wellp, I’ll not be doing that.”
He dedicated the rest of his life to not dying until the galaxy had no further use from him being alive. Obi-wan Kenobi died when it was actually more expedient for him to be a ghost.
The sum of his life was the choice to serve.
Like in The Threat Within where Qui-gon is training with a sixteen-maybe-seventeen-year-old Obi-wan and he realizes that Obi-wan is subtly directing the spar, giving ground, allowing Qui-gon to press him… it rings with the later quote in the Revenge of the Sith novelization I think, about his style as a grown man. Obi-wan gave ground because it was his way. One who watched and waited. One who cultivated patience.
Even though he was learning Ataru, an aggressive and offensive form of combat, he was still smart and strategic about how he fought. He gave ground. The groundwork for the solid Soresu he would later build was already there. From specializing in Atari for the first half of his life to dedicating himself to Soresu for the rest of it, he was not afraid to start completely over in this important part of his life.
Obi-wan was not too proud to start over.
Obi-wan was not too proud to learn lessons.
Obi-wan’s way was to give ground. To step back. To watch and to listen to the will of the force. To be patient. Not prefect, but willing to learn.

Before the computing era, ILM was the master of oil matte painting, making audiences believe that some of the sets in the original Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogy were real when they weren’t. They were the work of geniuses like Chris Evans, Michael Pangrazio, Frank Ordaz, Harrison Ellenshaw and Ralph McQuarrie ! Forever thank you, to their handmade art and the work of their colleagues, that made us dream of impossible worlds and fantastic places across Earth and the Universe.
There are more background paintings on this article, featuring comments by the masters/artists themselves !
Some of the following pieces were made by other artists 2:
exCUSE ME?!?!!??!??! TheYRE PAINTINGS?!??!!?!
SHUT UP I thought they were miniatures!!!!
It’s too beautiful. I could cry.
I love this because I’ll be watching a movie and think “how did they do that? Is that a building they built for this movie? Was it there beforehand? Is it cardboard or CGI? Is that actually some place on Earth that they’re filming?” And the answer to all of these now is “nope, that’s a painting”. I can’t believe some of the most iconic, familiar shots were paintings!

tbc i dont like when some ppl want to chalk down all of anakin's flaws on being groomed and being manipulated, because first, well, that's very boring and flattening, actually. And second, because flaws are necesary for a good character.
But also, Anakin as a character is so mentally ill that it is hard to tell what's just literal war ptsd intrusive thoughts, literal sithly manipulations, or just him having a jerk moment, lol. Anakin's main flaw is and will always be violence, and we all know from where that violence comes (his upbringing and also being put into a literal war), I can't not imagine Anakin not having violent thoughts at least half of the time, and is interesting to me because discussion about intrusive thoughts in fandom is rarely ever brought up, because a lot of the time Anakin seems to be partaking in really, really disturbing imagery or thoughts (and doesn't act on them) and a lot of these sound like intrusive thoughts to me, and Anakin's capacity to understand when a thoguht is or not his is very low lmao.
See, as someone that deals with intrusive thoughts, these suck bad, they suck a lot, I had a panic attack over an intrusive thought once. I need to avoid certain type of media or things to avoid intrusive thoughts, I still get very vivid imagery and intrusive thoughts from some dumb gore creepypasta I read when I was like 16; the thing with them is that to deal with these you need to be aware that brains are weird and sometimes They Will do That.
Now, case on point, Anakin who at the tender age of 9 years old already had seen so many slaves' heads exploding that he's capable of joking about it, was taught that his lightsaber (a weapon) is his life, lost his mom in the most violent way possible, then murdered a whole village over it, and then went to war for more countless pointless deaths, and who also very clearly shows traits of bpd (one of the symptoms being going from extreme idolization to contempt, and very extreme mood swings), is honestly going to have at least some very disgusting and disturbing ideas from time to time and not all of those can be blamed on Palpatine, at least not directly.
Like sure, ol' Palps takes advantage of those and makes them worse, and yes, of course some of the worst things you can find in Anakin are in fact, because of the grooming; but like, not all of it. And it really takes nuance and some good understanding of these things to not end in the far end of either side of the argument.
So like, yeah, the negative traits can't be downplayed, and the grooming can't be downplayed either, but the mental illness' symptoms shouldn't be downplayed as well, because seriously some of you all will go "Anakin is so bad on the head <3" and then when he does show the Actual Ugly Side of being Mentally Unwell, the reaction is either: "omg that's so crazy american psycho vibes wtf wtf that's not good why no one talks about how evil he is oml" or "that's just because Palpatine".
(and to be clear, I already said it, but gonna say it again, Palpatine IS to blame for a lot of it lmao, just,,,is very complicated, alright, a lot of Anakin's personality was molded both by Palpatine but also Obi-Wan/The Order.
Also, since is technically talked about in the post: Thoughts=/=Actions, not the point but just mentioning it because this is The Internet)
Yeah and to couple that, he has Force visions & Palpatine planting wacky stuff through the Force

Sketch Page Commission! <3
[tip jar!] || [commissions are closed]
theres this thing about palpatine that people often leave out and its that hes not only clever, the cast of PT and OT is populated with clever characters who struggle to get anywhere, but somehow in a world ravaged by the plague of emotional incompetence, hes somehow the only one who has ever glimpsed the dreaded feelings wheel. he understands the power of a growth mindset, he understands affirmations, hes the only one making connections such as bad childhood -> struggling to be a stable adult. never forget that the jedi council could literally hear anakin say "i burn like a sun on the inside and also if i dont recklessly endanger my own life the demons will get me" and theyre like hmm sounds like someone is a little bored, sounds like something to do would sort you out. you wanna have a mission??? you wanna have a mission?? here, have a mission! good boy, enjoy your first kill! and then 10 years later the grand entrance of darth vader is a fucking m night shyamalan plot twist to them. meanwhile palpatine zeroed in on the cause and effect of every vulnerability and intrusive thought anakin has ever had from the beginning. people say all the time the jedi practice [insert therapy practice] but really, its palpatine. the key to palpatine tho is that he uses this for evil. hes doing evil cbt out there. "i am capable of choosing evil" "my master 100% hates me for real" "the judgemental eye of my superiors is upon me at all times" "every attempt at surpassing the circle of violence & death i was born into will crumble to dust in my hands" "people cannot be reasoned with and are inherently selfish" are a few select s. palpatine approved affirmations you can practice by yourself!! each time he and anakin had a meeting (a session if you will) he immediately made him talk about whats going on in his life and how that makes him feel and then skillfully made it worse. he had anakin doing sithium when he should have been doing lithium but you gotta account that even doing this kinda twisting on purpose still means he needed a good understanding of how people work to begin with. in the PT everyone is trying to ignore the small, petty day to day issues they have because not being strongly affected is the easiest way to be lawfully good while palpatine remains the one singular person comprehending that those things can build up and thats why he wins. hes better at building distrust than the jedi are at building trust precisely because he works WITH feelings not against them. and THEN once hes consistently validated those feelings his advice will be to kill some kids about it
I feel like it's not addressed enough that Obi-Wan was so not ready for Anakin at the end of TPM. He wasn't quite ready to be a Knight, let alone take a Padawan, let alone Anakin.
Like, imagine you're 25 years old, already dealing with plenty of issues from your shitshow of a teen-to-young-adult experience when your Master - your father, your friend, your teacher, your guardian of 12 years, who you didn't always have the best relationship with but goddamn it you tried so hard and overcame so much to get to where you are - is literally murdered in front of you by a fucking demon, the ancient bogeymen of all your childhood stories who are suddenly very real and killing the people you love. Everyone looks at you now with so much awe and fear because, in a haze of grief and panic, you managed to become the first to kill a demon in a millennium - which is somehow that's enough of a qualification to immediately graduate your apprenticeship with full honours even though you never actually got the chance to finish it. Five minutes of pure terror turned your life upside down, and now you have to shoulder the burdens of a knighthood that you know you're not ready for, and find some way to live with the crushing expectations that come with your newfound, accidental and very unwanted semi-legendary status. And, if that wasn't enough already, within 24 hours of all this going down, you're also legally responsibly for raising a hyperactive 9 year old ex-slave Child of Prophesy with crippling CPTSD and more power than god. You somehow, somehow have to raise this boy to be both a good Knight - which you haven't had a chance to figure out how to be yourself yet - and a functional person - which was never and easy thing for you to be but is getting harder by the day. You desperately want to do right by your new Padawan and honour your Master's dying wish but you're not ready for any of this, you didn't ask for it, and you're trying so hard to not repeat Qui-Gon's mistakes whilst also being painfully aware that you can never live up to what he could have been. Then there's homework and missions and nightmares and you worry that Anakin isn't making friends and you haven't slept more than 3 hours a night in weeks and the President of the Galaxy is pressuring you for some Private Alone Time with your child -
How the fuck is anyone supposed to handle that?
I added a bunch of comments bc big LOVE to this post but also wanna add that when Obi-wan finally wanted to live for himself more and redo some of his mistakes, a war was happening and he overtrusted Anakin as well as the Jedi Council.
Obi-wan being the youngest Council member while also starting out as a low M-count kid and an unwanted initiates to a lot of successful friends and a pretty neglected padawan at first to a black sheep of a mentor is also it's own flavor of issue. Like EVEN if he wanted to stand against most members of the Council (which he did, all the times, especially to protect Anakin & Ahsoka behind their views), he could only do so much before he lost the influence he so diligently built as "the Golden Boy" and then he couldn't protect his people and give his opinions anymore.
Like my man was trying to do so much and he always had to make the hard choice and forced to mature overnight. The prequels/TCW direction sometimes makes him look stupid in his choices but he's like. Doing his best and he did really well. Anakin said that Obi-wan was hard on him but even Anakin knew that Obi-wan was harder on himself.

AND THIS
DO YOU SEE THE VISION
Yeah Mr. Darcy’s proposal was a complete turd and a half but you gotta understand. You got your life together. A good career, stable income, retirement plan, all that shit together. And you meet this girl. And she’s everything. Clever, outspoken, funny, calls you on your bullshit. Grade A cutie, right? And she doesn’t go out of her way to spend time with you but she’s nice, and sometimes you catch her looking your way in a way that makes you think you might have a shot.
But her family. Holy shit.
First off, it’s p much ALL women, and mostly UNMARRIED women, which at this time means of something happens to her dad then you’re financially responsible for like. Four grown ass adults, potentially forever
Because mom in law is DEFINITELY gonna need someone to take care of her when dad in law kicks it, and they have like. NO money. So already you’re accepting that if all goes well, you’re gonna be one random old bag’s retirement home. That’s expensive and exhausting, yeah? Imagine asking someone on a first date knowing that if they say yes and things go good her high-strung chihuahua mother is gonna move in with you. IMAGINE.
And girly’s other sisters. Well, one is a sweetheart, yeah, so she probably won’t be an issue, but that still leaves three more, and two of those ones are INSUFFERABLE. Never went to school, dumb as rocks, spend cash like it’s toilet paper
And while one of the two is young still and might grow out of it the OTHER one is actively torpedo’ing her entire family’s reputation by wandering off with random dudes and chasing ass. She’s never gonna work, she can’t build connections, she’s a fucking sinkhole, and she’s being led on by the same goddamn con man ass leeching tit who’s been bleeding you dry while telling anyone who’ll listen that your family is full of ratty thieving bastards.
And if he dumps her after a week- WHICH YOU KNOW HIS BITCH ASS IS GONNA- you’ve got a SECOND UNMARRIABLE GROWN ASS ADULT TO PROVIDE FOR. And you KNOW she’s gonna be a tantrum-throwing little shit about it, and it’s not like you can lock her in the basement or something, you’re gonna have to bring her fucking. Everywhere. And give her an allowance and shit while she contributes zero, because again, she NEVER GOT EDUCATED AND HAS NO MARKETABLE SKILLS. She’s not even good to TALK to. FUCK
And you’re looking at this girl’s father like “please for the love of fuck get your spawn under control, marry them off, get them working on their résumé, learning to sew or be nursemaids or manage staff or SOMETHING, yall got no money and one foot in the grave” and that old man just laughs like “haha yeah, what can you do. lol”
So you’re looking to the mom and finally it’s making sense how she got that twitch in her eye and as MUCH as she is you’re starting to realize she’s the SMART one, desperately throwing her armloads of girls at random men like they’re a bunch of fucking lifeboats bobbing around a sinking ship, like yes Jesus Christ sweetly that life boat IS old and ugly and kind of boring but for FUCKS SAKE PICK ONE
And you look back at this girl who is ALSO REFUSING THE LIFE BOATS BY THE WAY and god damn it she’s still the most radiant thing you’ve ever seen so fine, fuck it, Christ alive, you’ll do it. You’ll shoot your shot. She’s everything you’ve ever wanted in anybody abut it’s not even just about that anymore, it’s about being her best fucking shot at a future, and even if she doesn’t like you all that much she’s still gonna say yes and that might break your heart a bit knowing it’s about the money but who knows, maybe it will at least be civil, or companionable, and even if she doesn’t LOVE you at least you’ll know she’s well and cared for
And so you’ll do it. You’ll take on the neurotic stress mess mother in law, the absent father, the broke ass wingnut no brain no money no future airhead sisters, the bad mannered relatives and the embarrassing behaviour and the impending future of sharing your entire shit with a clown parade of freeloaders, you’ll risk it all and accept the absolute certainty of financial ruin and emotional exhaustion for the rest of your whole ass life and you’ll make your own family deal with it too, you’ll do it, you’ll fucking DO IT, you stupid lovesick motherfucker
And so you go to this chick like “look. Your whole family’s a shitshow. You’ve got fucking nothing and you’re gonna die on the street. But for some reason- and I don’t get it either- I’ve fallen in love with you, and I wish I didn’t, but I did, so I’m telling you that whether you like me or not, I’ll give you everything. I’ll give you everything even if it’s the dumbest shit I ever done. Fuck my stupid Baka ass, I’ll marry you.”
And she looks at you- having heard or considered absolutely none of your months-long internal debate and monologue- and goes “The fuck did you just say about my family, you son of a bitch?”
And the shock of that is enough to jolt you back into a reality where you are able to actually hear and process what just came out of your damn mouth And yeah
Yeah, I think I kinda get it
saw someone describe Luke Skywalker as the 'bastard son of a sith lord' and i have to say i think Darth Vader would be VERY offended by that. like how DARE you imply Padme wasn't his wife??
I don't think it's fair to call him a deadbeat either. like the man started trying to have a relationship with his son as soon as he found out he existed. he was trying so so hard to have a father son relationship. yes he tortured his son's friends and yes he did also maim him but that's not important right now.
#what about his daughter #did he try to have a father daughter relationship as well?
i think in the approx. 1 hour he knew his daughter existed he did attempt to have a relationship with her to the best of his ability. yes this did mostly amount to plotting to make her evil and yes prior to that he did unknowingly torture her but that's not important right now either.
