when I was in high school I had a literature teacher who had a policy of unlimited extra credit. All you had to do was read a book by a notable author (his discretion) and have a little chat with him after school to prove that you read it. No limits, no need for variety (one month I decided I really loved Kurt Vonnegut and just read everything of his I could get my hands on).

Yes, I was tearing through books constantly, and talking to this teacher at least weekly. Because even though I always loved reading as a kid, literature was always a very weak subject for me in terms of a teaching-to-standardized-test school setting (I just do awful on "what color were the curtains" type multiple choice questions. Those details don't stick in my memory THEY JUST DON'T). But that didn't matter for this class. I could just read my way out of any bad test score. I have always had fond memories of how I "fudged" my way through that class and "abused' the extra credit policy.

I was thinking about it again today, and only just now realized that he absolutely tricked me into being well-read, while my teenage self thought I was totally getting away with something. THAT MOTHERFUCKER. I hope he's doing well.

also I don't think parents "these days" are uniquely terrible, I just think neglect is showing up in new ways as technology progresses. today's ipad kid would've been wandering around in a ditch alone all day and night before. parents not wanting to have to deal with children is not a new phenomenon.

And the ways children react are different. Not only do they dismiss social interaction, but they use technology to replace it. Their screentime is tied to their regulation much more than their time alone. That’s why they lash out when the tech is taken away. It also doesn’t help that these parents have no idea how to handle their child’s big emotions. They will either succumb to the outburst and give the tablet back, or threaten to hit or do hit their child, both of which will only reenforce their behavior and will teach their child to throw tantrums to get what they want, or be sneakier than their parent. And if their parents do not set boundaries, or aren’t even around enough to regulate what their child does on their tech and for how long, you get people like me who learned a lot from a young age about things I probably shouldn’t have. People who isolate themselves despite longing for connection. People who are susceptible to porn addiction, AI addiction, doom scrolling. People who use the tools now designed to fuck them over as a coping mechanism.

Parents need to, FOR THE LOVE OF FUCK, pay attention to their kids emotionally just as much as they do physically. That is best for their development, that is part of your job, and it doesn’t have to be insanely hard. If you give them a thing to do and some rules, both of which need to be developmentally appropriate, they will more than likely be content. If they get upset, ask what’s wrong, listen, affirm their feelings, and then provide a solution. Have compassion, have patience, and try to be rational. It sounds easier said than done, but the more you practice, the easier it gets.
