DARE YOU TO DEATH | EP 2
Hanahaki disease is a psychosomatic illness. It's a thing that your body does in response to stress over constantly repressing/concealing your feelings in settings with high background magic. It's like you've been ignoring pain for a long time and suddenly your vision starts going dark, because your affected body is just YANKING on random alerts trying to get you to PAY ATTENTION there is a PROBLEM. Yes the flowers do really exist. So do non-magical psychosomatic symptoms. The flowers aren't special.
This does of course open up the trope to options for non-romantic concealed feelings. Which I think is great. There is something viscerally satisfying about the person who seems so outwardly chipper coughing and hacking and spitting up Depression Flowers so now everyone has to know they're hurting. Isn't there?
Hanahaki, but it's a child that feels neglected by their parents.
Hanahaki, but it's someone whose friends have started ghosting them.
Hanahaki, someone's wife is cheating on them.
Hanahaki, the disease that gives you three options: confront your feelings, destroy the love you hold for someone or perish choking on roses.
He's suddenly questioning why they started dating if this is what it means. If growing up means growing apart and growing apart means moving forward then why are they doing any of this? And you can feel it in every moment. He's questioning growing up because growing up means losing all the things he's come to care about. And that's terrifying. He just fell in love, he just decided they were boyfriends and now life is saying 'move away, separate, go your own ways and stop worrying about staying together' and everyone is telling him that's the only way to be.
He feels like he's being rejected. He's being left behind in everyone's dreams of the future but even more in their needs right at the moment. The studying that tore them apart other times as well and just all the ways he's falling away from his friends and their dreams and their futures because his future doesn't feel the same as theirs and they promise again and again that things will go back to normal but they never can because this is the future.
They tell him they're not leaving him behind and that he still has a place but everyone is moving away and everyone is planning and how can he not be worried so far beyond the moment?
THE LINE BETWEEN THEM! Auuugh. It's exactly everything to be feared. They do cross it, slowly, but even then... oof. The lines! They're there.
Ah the worry of moving on and growing up and growing apart. The eternal challenge of young love developing into an adult relationship
Of course Ko Neung simply leaves when he finds out Ko Song is leaving without telling him. Of course he doesn't just want to talk it out. The future seems to be running away from him and this isn't the first time that he simply chose not to tell him he was going somewhere else.
Ko Nueng was already feeling abandoned during the exams and just recovering from that feeling and now he found out that his boyfriend is moving away and not from his boyfriend.
It did not seem uncertain when his father was selling things before the exam results came out.
What a beautiful fight, honestly. Because it's so perfect for their ages and for Ko Song trying so hard to just be logical about it and Ko Neung just throwing that all out the window because he isn't feeling very logical right now. And that 'logic over emotion' leaving him feeling even more hurt because it feels like an accusation.
So this is what you want. Like... I get it, it makes sense, it's the right thing to do. But if you do it, you need to own it. And trying to tell him that you don't want this but that it's the future you planned and wanted is... more than a bit disingenuous to me.
You can say that all you want but moving away, especially without telling him anything or warning him at all... isn't changing nothing.
Oh, boys. Just... oh, boys.
Tiny, tiny boys. Lashing out and hurting and aching and finding nothing else to do but lash at the one person who seems to be choosing anything but you and the relationship you built... Ugh. And it's even harder when no one is right or wrong, when both the hurts are real hurts and the abandonment is real on both sides.
I mean, it's a bit more than that but it's also not. But like... this is the kind of communication that they need to learn at this age.
I love when the show acknowledges that both people can be wrong and that's okay and that everyone can come back from being wrong and still be happy.
The worst part of this episode is no one is wrong. Ko Song SHOULD follow his dream and go to the school he wants. Ko Nueng can be upset that he's leaving. And I think Ko Song should have been more honest that he might be leaving but he's young! He's going to mess up and not know how to handle things. I do kinda agree with Achi more than Augar because sports isn't the most stable profession and it's very difficult to make a living doing it and I'm too practical to think you should just skip college to do basketball. But Augar should also follow his dream if he can.
I like all the characters
But I really like Augar. He says the things I wish Neung would. The way he told Achi that he only studied cause he wanted to make him happy and how he likes that Achi worries a for him.
How he simultaneously came out and admitted his crush on Neung. How he was kind of the first to feel the distance growing between him and Neung when Song showed up
And more often than not he’s the voice of reason when Neung comes to him
Aren't you mad at me? WHEN ORANGES FALL Episode 11
it really does hurt—koko being so brutal to one another, but boy is it a satisfying resolution to a storyline that’s been so meaningfully laid from the absolute beginning. like. for as stable as his family is, ko’s debilitating fear of abandonment is one he’s had, it seems, all of his life, or at most, from the moment he first befriends augar. and for some reason that fear is manyfold greater regarding the boy he met mere months before. and, staggering, is a fear he both registers and admits to. you feel it the moment ko song goes missing the day of the test—the boisterous and brash ko going all subdued and somber. the manifestation of that fear to a shift to unabashed anger as the boy does the same—but more deliberate—about the kiss. ko is going so genuinely mad, his missing for ko song so great that he’s seeing the boy there by his side and at moments that he’s so far. and that to no mention of the 120 minutes of the day that he sulks he’ll be absent from his sight.
it’s understandable for ko’s age—more as he holds others as dear as he does. BUT it’s made it so that his dream of his life ahead IS ko song and ko song alone. so that he assumes if ko song doesn’t feel the same, if he doesn’t remain—that that must mean he doesn’t fit the future he desires to make. so, yes, the kos are both going to bangkok and so the angst may seem meaningless. but ko’s fears, at this stage, had to be addressed and assuaged. so that if one day he’s really made to be miles and miles from ko song, or ko song from he, he’ll be able to do it, for both the other’s sake and for that of his self and his dream.
I like that they all acknowledge that he is not the same person as he was before. It's interesting to see where they will take this.
