Happy Pride Month! ❤️🌈
the thing that made such an impact on me with all of us strangers is that. okay first of all if you haven't seen the movie you should not read on because it's gonna spoil some things that you're better off being unspoiled for and it's a really beautiful film so you should go and watch it right now.
okay. so the thing is, if you're like andrew scott's character adam, you can get very used to living a life alone. it's not ideal, but eventually you can mostly cut yourself off from craving contact with other people, and then you don't have to risk the pain of those connections not working out. i'm guessing a lot of us on here can relate to this. anyways, a lot of times with these kind of stories, the main thrust is that if you let people into your life, it does make you vulnerable, but it also brings a lot of beautiful things that are worth the risk. and that's a good message! that's what i thought the point of the movie was going to be for like 3/4 of it. you know, adam lets harry in, they fall in love, he realizes it's worth it, etc. and then you get to the ending, and you realize, oh, the point of letting people in is not just that you will get something out of it, but actually that you might have something to offer other people even if you don't know it, and your presence can be a boon to their life. that to deny other people the chance to connect with you is in some ways inherently selfish. adam could have saved harry's life if he invited him that first night, if his own stuff wasn't standing in the way.
a reminder that ursula le guin’s writing schedule was the best writing schedule.
the unholy trinity of piss-poor caretakers, tag yourself:
tomboy, meaning "this child is clearly queer but let's hope it goes away"
sensitive, meaning "clearly neurodivergent and often distressed but let's keep going until they grow numb"
mature, meaning "traumatized but let's ignore that"
quiet, meaning "has been yelled at or ignored a few too many times and now considers all attempts at communicating with others to be pointless"
self-sufficient, meaning "next to zero trust in parental figures' ability in various aspects of parenting"
lazy, meaning "depressed, but expected to preform tasks or actions without positive support or knowledge of how to do things"
Why do they even make apps for ADHD. You want me to use my 24/7 handheld immediate distraction device? To manage my 'gets distracted too easily' disorder? Ooooh we developed the perfect tool for managing your anemia. Its hosted in Dracula's castle. 👍
Picked up my phone to consult my task list for today and now I'm reblogging this instead, case in point
what they dont tell you about adulthood is that it’s startlingly easy to go long periods of time without having any fun at all not even a little bit. btw this causes ur brain to try to kill you with knives and hammers.
Yeah the thing is, when you're a kid, there are often a lot of people going out of their way to make things fun for you: parents, other family members, your friends' parents/families, adults at school and at community places like libraries...and that's on top of your friends your own age, and the general fact that as a kid having fun is one of your top priorities.
And then if you go to college, there aren't quite so many people making things fun for you--although there are RAs, and the student life office, and various clubs and organizations doing activities, etc.--but you're in an environment where your friends are nearby and you all have similar schedules and responsibilities, so a lot fun just kind of arises spontaneously.
But once you're out on your own, in the workforce and whatnot, all that just drops of a cliff. Planned activities for adults exist, but you generally have to seek them out, rather than having them relentlessly advertised to you and/or taking place in locations where you will bump into them on the way to breakfast. And your friends are all spread out, and everyone's busy at different times, so you aren't just bumping into people and getting sucked into whatever adventure they have going on, you have to make arrangements.
It's a big shift! If you have kids, you generally figure out pretty quick that your role is now the Planner Of Fun, but without that big obvious signpost, it can feel like the world just gradually stopped having fun things in it.
But it hasn't; you just have to plan and seek out opportunities for fun yourself, because it's no longer anyone else's job to put them in front of you--it's yours!
TL:DR, when you're an adult you've got to take yourself to the aquarium and pick out a plushie in the gift shop and pay for it with your own credit card; you don't just wake up one day and find out that's happening. (Or that it's a have-dinner-on-a-picnic-blanket-in-the-living-room day, or that you're going to your cousins' house where you can splash around in the creek and look for frogs, or that's it's the day when we put the speakers in the window and let the music echo in the alley down below while we wash the car, or anything!)
well apparently everyone else hates it. i do not. i love it. i love what they did with it, i love that crowley got to choose, i love that he chose humanity, that he did not choose to run away.
because THAT is who he is. he loves his stars and creations, he loves humanity, he loves the messiness, the good and the bad, the ugly and the beautiful, he loves watching them. he showed jesus all the kingdoms of the world to share that love with someone who he knows already felt it.
in the end, they made that choice together. it's a choice they have made before, over and over, saving humanity over themselves. no god, no angels, no demons, no thousands of years of suffering for all the millions of eternal beings.
personally, i choose to believe that god's last gift to them was integrating them into the fabric of the new universe, so they will find each other in every lifetime. but without anyone watching, without any plan behind it, without senseless suffering, without creating stars just to destroy them.
just the two of them, together, always.
