Overwatch - A Month In
My thoughts on Overwatch and a few of the heroes you can play!
Avatar Missing
The day was warm and bright, a strong sun beaming down. People of all ages were outside enjoying the sun, even if they didn’t want to be.
The order had gone out two days out ago. The bleak winter would be halted for one day, a day of sunshine created. Every living human had been ordered to be outside and be enjoying it.
Today was the wedding of the King and his Princess. No king should be wed in the cold. Magic and science had bee fused together to break the spell of the eternal winter, if only for a day.
The story was all a lie. So much of it was all a lie. Veronica wished she knew none of it. She had been happy in the lie. The truth only depressed her, as it would anyone.
She was not outside. If everyone in the world had been ordered outside, you could be damn sure whatever was happening was happening inside.
Inside was normally full of people, a metal wasteland ringing with the troublesome sounds of entombed life. Now it was empty, a metal shell ringing with the sounds of nothing. She can’t believe it had taken her so long to realise just how quiet it was. It was not just quiet, it was silent.
The machines were not running.
She ran as quickly as she could while still remaining silent. She stuck to the service tunnels out of habit and comfort. If the machines were not running then she needed to be in the power core.
The power core was a fairly large thing, at least she knew the room surrounding it was. She had never been inside. Of all the guarded rooms the power core was the only one she had not managed to find a way into. Today the door was just swinging on its hinges.
She moved in silently, sure she could find a place to hide. The room was large, and empty. Six people stood in the middle of the room, and two of them looked at her as she walked in. She went to leave but the door swung shut. She was caught.
She would not be taken without a fight. She readied herself without making any sudden moves. Her pistols were ready to go, her wrist blades ready to spring should she need them. She could take them all down, then worry about how to get out.
One of the men looking towards her raised a hand, and her mind went blank. His voice spoke, coming as if from right next to her.
“Calm now, Veronica, we had been waiting for you.” He spoke.
She knew this power, it was the power of the dream, the power that fuelled the fake reality. She did not struggle against it for she knew there was no need. It could not claim her now. Her freedom from it had been hard fought, but it was a lasting victory.
“We just want to talk.” He spoke again.
She walked forward, partly because she wanted to and partly because he wanted her to. Her anger flared, just enough to force the man from her mind. He let his hand down, simply nodding the point to her. Her next step forward was purely her own.
The six were a who’s who of society. The man who had calmed her was High Magus Victor, high lord of the seven school of magic users. Next to him was Lucious, eternal bodyguard to the High Magus. He was a nasty bugger. She had crossed paths with him many times.
As she approached the other four turned to look. High Tinkerer Lucy was the first, a squat woman with a contest level of grime stuck to her face. Next to her was Chief Enforcer Lewis, a man of no remarkable physical appearance. Next to him was Cyborg Alpha, leader of all cyborg and robotic people who shared this tomb with the living. Finally there was Lady, known also as Her. If she was here, the news must be grave indeed.
“This my fellows is Veronica, the one who freed herself from the dream and has been causing us issues ever since.” Victor said.
“And why have we been waiting for her?” Lewis said.
It was a good question, and one she would have asked herself had she known they had been waiting. Her level of unease was rising, as was the fact she knew she was going to be asked to do something for these bastards.
“Few of us have ever stepped foot in this room before, and since the day construction was finished to today none ever have. What was different then is the same as now. This room is empty. It should not be.” Victor said.
Only Lucy looked worried so far. In her short time being free of the dream, she had come to respect the tinkerer. This was going to be a bad day.
“In this room a storm should be rampaging. A storm of such immense and pure power that should any living thing even glance upon it they would turn to dust. This room was built to contain that storm, and furthermore harness just the small amount we could handle to power this whole city.
“Four days ago everything was fine. Then the storm was gone. Batteries have been keeping the city going, but they will soon expire. In short this city is dying, and should she fall, all within her fall also.”
She knew Victor’s words to be true. Her sense of truth had been key to her finding her way out of the dream. She didn’t care. The world of this city would end, millions of lives snuffed out, and she didn’t care.
“Well just get your collective of magicians, wizards and mages to start a new storm!” Lewis said.
If that was possible it would have already been done. Victor was not one to share secrets if he did not have to. The man was desperate. His external composure was solid, but Veronica could see through that. The High Magus was panicked.
“Not even the combined power of all magic users giving their all could restart the storm this chamber housed. The power once contained in this room was the energy of a dying Avatar. We could never hope to replicate that.” Victor said.
Avatar? It was a new word to her, but the sucking in of breath of the others made it clear it was something big. The fact the combined might of all magic users couldn’t match it meant it was powerful. Why was it she was suddenly so sure they were going to ask her to hunt one down?
“Why try and restart it. You said yourself that the city barley tapped into the power to run. Why not build a much smaller power source, one the magicians could run?” Alpha said.
“We have been trying to do that for years. The power is there but it does not keep. Once cast it fades, and the distance covered before it is gone is feet and we need miles.” Lucy said.
Interesting. Next time sometime tried to cast a spell on her she would just try and outrun it!
“Any solution that requires no magic at all?” Veronica said.
She knew it was a taboo question. Magic was the key to everything, but she knew the lie in that. There were ways to accomplish what magic did without magic, and she knew Lucy would be working on them.
“None that we could get working in time.” Lucy said.
That was not a no. Another interesting thing to remember.
“Our best bet is to try and re-acquire the power we have lost. We know it did not get free for the city would lie in ruins if it had. Someone or something must have found a way of storing it and then decided to take it. I can assure you that this could not have been done for any good reason.” Victor said.
His composure was fraying a little, his voice rising in pitch just a little. It made her smile. Maybe the great Magus was human underneath it all, not the cold ice man she had often envisaged.
“Fine, I will get my men on it. What are we looking for?” Lewis said.
Victor shook his head. He didn’t know.
“We don’t know. This room was the smallest we could design to contain the power, yet clearly whoever took it has housed it in something much smaller.” Lucy said.
“Must it exist as one?” Lady said.
Her voice sent shivers down Veronica’s spine. So cold, so dead. Still, it was a good question and one Lucy had clearly not asked herself.
It was amazing to watch the tinkerer’s brain at work. Her mouth moved but no words fell out, her eyes darted around as if looking at information floating before them. She tapped fingers to thumb in patterns so complex and fast it made Veronica’s head hurt. In seconds she nodded.
“No, it could be split. In essence there are four parts of the power, each one fairly neutral on its own. If you split them and stored them separately you are not containing the raw power just the small building blocks of it. Even so each container would need to around six feet tall, magically sealed and kept a large distance from the others.”
“Kept away from each other, why?” Victor said.
“The four pieces don’t want to be split and will try and reform. A small cage could contain them for a short time if they were near but the pieces would soon break free. Distance would hamper that, but not forever. Not knowing the materials or spells used to seal them I can’t say how long, but I would guess even with the containers spread as far apart as they city would allow we are talking days before the pieces rip free.”
“And that is if they are even separated.” Lady said.
“The timeline of days is true in any case. This city will run out of power in four days. Lucy and I will do our best to make it last longer, but I would guess we could add hours not days.” Victor said.
“Then it is sorted. I will send my men to every crevice of this city to look for any suspicious looking containers and I will alert you immediately should we find any.” Lewis said.
Alpha nodded along, adding he would send scannerbots to help in the search. The two of them walked away, the crisis clearly solved for them.
Idiots.
“What are your thoughts Veronica?” Victor said.
“Don’t just want to steal them?”
“No, I do not.”
“Who could have taken it?”
“Sorry?” Lucy said.
“I am assuming to take it I must be in here, or at the very least the door open?”
Lucy nodded.
“Yet you said just looking at it would turn a living thing to dust. Would a cyborg suffer the same fate?”
“Yes, they are part living and live in symbiosis, one cannot exist without the other.” Lucy said.
“What about robots? They are not living. Could they take it?”
Lucy nodded.
Veronica looked at Lady and her next question stuck in her throat. The dead one smiled.
“She wants to know if one of my kind could have taken it.” Lady said.
Lucy nodded again.
“So two possible suspect pools? I will look into them both.” Victor said.
“Nothing is that simple. If something can be made to contain it could a suit be made to protect you from the power, even for a short time?”
Again Lucy nodded.
If you wanted to find the truth you needed a trail to follow. Stomping around the city looking for something that may not even exist was a waste of time. Looking for suspects only narrowed down by ‘not alive’ was similarly just as stupid. No, to find the truth you needed somewhere to start, something known on which to build.
She may not care about the people, but she did care about the truth, the puzzle.
“Lucy, talk to me about that door.”
Talking About Time Travel - About Time
I have been promising this for awhile and here it is. I am working on a time travel story and working out my rules for time travel, so I decided to record as I work my way through making these rules! Video 1 is a little rough and we only talk about time and what it looks like, so no actual time travel!
Let me know what you think, and remember to subscribe and like on YouTube as well!
Webgame Wednesday - HatFall
This time I try and catch hats on my head, in real life and in the game!
Free on Steam Tuesday - AdVenture Capitalist
A simple but very addictive game with a soundtrack still going round my head. I do hum and sing badly in this video – you have been warned!
Dark Thoughts
Have you ever sat down and thought to yourself something you found surprisingly dark? Maybe a terrible joke after finding out a loved one has died, or a knee jerk reaction to a question that shakes your own understanding of you? This happens to me a lot. It is a worrying phenomena.
It makes you question yourself. It makes you wonder if all people think like that, or if it really is just you. You can start to feel different, start to crave time alone or feel forced to spend your time there. You fear one of your thoughts may spill out and soil those around you.
You know what? I am pretty sure we all think like this. I am pretty sure we have all found a motion fleet across our brain that makes us feel sick. I am sure we all carry within us thoughts that weigh us down.
Over the last week I have felt burdened by these thoughts. What is normally an inconvenience of weight became a crippling one, one that threatened to make me collapse. It was not that any thought in particular hit me hard, just the collective weight of the little ones over the years.
I have never understood suicide. That is not to say I do not understand what drives people to such an action. The human mind works in a way it was never intended to. As humans we believe we are above nature, and it is our fight to prove it that drives us insane.
Society surrounds us with rules. Most of us accept the sense in them. Humans are feral and nasty; there would be no society without rules. Rules keep us safe, rules keep us together. Rules sometimes tell us it is bad to be human. But they only used to punish those who acted outside of those rules. Now they seek to punish those who even think outside of those rules.
We are forced to not only act according to the rules, but to think according to them as well. Free thought is frowned upon, the consensus reigns. When the consensus changes we are told to change with it. We are told the facts but the colour of these facts changes upon societies point of view. In this freedom of information age, information has never been so controlled.
History is told by the victors, the present is told by whoever is there at the time. We live in a world where we are not allowed to make up our own minds. We live in a world where we must fight not only our actions but our words and our thoughts. We are told what is ok to think. We are told anything else is wrong; dark.
Is it any wonder we have dark thoughts, when thoughts are sanctioned? Is it any wonder we shy away when society will turn on us for a free thought? Questions are not allowed, pondering is frowned upon. We are a hive mind with no queen.
Dark thoughts are freedom. Dark thoughts are happiness. We should not be punished for what we think, we should be punished for what we do. Option A is to live within the walls of society, Option B is to leave. There is no Option B. Our minds trap us within us a trap. There is no freedom. Freedom is a unicorn.
The unicorn comes. She runs as fast as she can through the vast reaches of space and time, she runs to save us. She will not be welcomed, she will not be protected. We must protect her. She is our last hope; our only hope.
The unicorn comes. Stand ready. Her arrival is freedom; freedom is bloody.
The unicorn comes.
Webgame Wednesday - Escape the Bathroom
Another Wednesday, another web game. This time I want to escape the bathroom! Spoiler I do finish the game, so watch with care.
Free on Steam Tuesday Episode Two - Unturned
This week I try Unturned, a Minecraft looking zombie survival game. Not my cup of tea but it does the zombie survival thing well, and there is a rocket deer.
Hearthstone - Random Paladin Deck Challenge
The mission – roll a random Paladin deck in Hearthstone and try and make rank 20. I don’t make it, but I will. This is a copy of a twitch live stream.
Free on Steam Tuesday - Episode One
Hello everybody and welcome to Free on Steam Tuesday, where I find a game that is free on Steam and play it for around twenty minutes. First up is the fishing simulator Fishing Planet. As someone who has never fished I cannot comment on the realism, but it was a surprising fun game; just beware this is a free to play game with a cash shop so a lot of money can be spent!
Overwatch - Still Going Strong
The above video is an archive of me live streaming Overwatch. I adjust my mic volume around halfway through, and well it gets a lot louder! If you would like to know how I feel about the game just under a week in, please follow me below!
There was a moment around three days in where I almost stopped playing. The glee of getting into a closed beta was wearing off, I was involved in a match where people were screaming down the microphone the whole time and the gameplay was not clicking. For some reason I played again the next day. It clicked. Yes I was still terrible but it was fun in a way few team games are when you are getting your butt kicked all over the map.
BTW, you can mute individual party member mic’s if they are being dicks, which was a godsend. I know they feel verbal communication is vital to gameplay, but it really is not. They have done an excellent job with the emotes (for want of a better word) that decisions can be made using just them.
The gameplay does need a little variation. If this shipped as a paid product I could not honestly say you should get it (price depending of course). Hopefully more maps and modes will be incoming (or at least talked about) at Blizzcon. Even so this game has sucked me back in and I love it.
PirateCampGaming
You may have noticed that things have been quite around here. Well, Chad is recovering from his long contract job by coming down with some fancy illness that has him wrapped up in blankets and unwilling to talk and do much of anything. We all wish him well and hope to see him back up on this site in the New Year.
As for me, between script writing for two possible TV shows I have launched PirateCampGaming, my new Youtube / Twitch stream and channel relating to everything gaming or whatever I feel like rattling on about. You may have seen the Overwatch videos appearing on this site, it is related to this.
Narrative Kingdom as a platform is going to grow to include this. We always wanted a gaming element, including the streaming, and PCG is the start. Our latest videos will be posted, but the other content will not suffer once this initial setup phase is over.
A new section has been created on the site just for PCGaming. When we can work it out we will be allowing you to filter all the Gaming posts away if you so desire. We hope you won’t as some pretty interesting content is coming onto the channel.
Thank you all for your support
Piratecamp.
Overwatch Beta - Day Three
This time round a video for Overwatch Day three, listing my likes, dislikes and wish list.
Overwatch Beta - Day Two
Second day of the Overwatch beta, and the fun is still there. I have a few complaints but nothing major. Seems very polished for a beta, but it is very bare bones. More after the break.
I have played a few more characters now. My rubbishness as DPS continues and none of the damage characters work for me. Luckily that is not a problem as some of tank and healer classes do.
I love Winston. Dropping shields then leaping forward and kicking the s**t out of players is great fun. Using him to take objectives is just great, and if you have a healer in your pocket this gorilla becomes almost unstoppable.
In the header above is Lucio. He is a hybrid healer really, as most of his healing is passive. I couldn’t get used to his riding to on walls on thing, but his healing and Boom gun are great fun. A healer you can play as DPS to help them stay alive? Not a bad way to play.
The game does feel empty though. A handful of maps and really only one play mode (well two but they differences are minor really). Also, lack of any kind of progression seems unwise. I don’t want to become more powerful, but unlocking hats and different skins would keep me interested in this game. However, I go more into what I want in a vid coming up soon, so I won’t dwell on it.
Day two and I still like this game. Other FPS have lost me by now, but not Overwatch. I can only hope some flesh is added to the bones to keep the game fresh. As it stands this game won’t keep me going forever.
Overwatch Menu Gripe
You can’t select Overwatch menu options with a gamepad! Arrgg!
Overwatch Beta - Day One
First off – how excited am I to get into the Overwatch beta? Talk about an early Christmas present! What are my first thoughts? I love it. My main concern is re-playabilty, but the shine has not worn off on day one.
The tutorial is rubbish. Far too slow with no easy way to skip it or force it along once you decide to play it. You don’t need to play it, and the controls are both obvious if you play FPS and your attacks are on the screen all the time anyway! I guess for new players it might work. I will get my nephew to play through it and see how that goes.
The game itself looks lovely. A decent FPS that is colourful and nice to look at? Yes please! The levels look lovely, but they do not all play that well. I am not 100% sure on map names, but a few of them seem to have the defending players start off way too far back if they die.
The maps are designed to have tunnels for progress, but I have not seen these used very often. People stick to the wide middle path and push forwards and back. This is not a complaint, in fact it is a fun way to play this game.
I sucked at DPS. But then I always have which is why FPS (although I love them) are usually single player for me. Although I felt I was letting my team down by being awful at killing the bad guys, the roles here make a huge difference. Roles are nothing new, but here they just work.
Top characters so far – Mercy (healer, header image) and Reinhardt (a big mech dude with a large shield and a hammer!). I have not tried construction yet.
All in all good day one. On first launch I could not change hero so was stuck as Tracer for a long time. Too fast moving for me but still a lot of fun.
Supergirl Episode One
Episode one has now been shown, and the DNA of the Flash is clearly evident in this take on the cousin of Superman. Does it work as well? As a series opener I would have to say no, but that does not mean I am not excited.
Melissa Benoist as the titular character is a definite plus. She plays the role well, a mix of needing to be a hero but dampened by years of forced doubt. I took to her well, and I am looking forward to seeing how she and the character develop as the show continues.
Everyone else in this episode came across as a little meh. I guess this makes sense, Kara is the star. But Flash works mostly because of the team he has around him. For Supergirl to work she will need to find such a team, and so far there are few decent contenders.
The government task force (the clear team setup) I hope just goes away. Although David Harewood is great as Hank Henshaw, Kara working for a shady government underground agency just does not sit well for me. We will never them trust them, and she doesn’t need them. She will never become friends with such an agency, and a show like this lives and dies on the friendships.
I hated the sister. Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers delivered a dead eyed performance and embodied everything I feared this show would do. I am not a fan of melodrama (I hate it in the Flash), and she was only there to deliver that. I hope she does not become part of the team, or a villain. I also hope she does not become a anchor weighing the show down.
Talking of anchors, let’s us get the bullshit out of the way now. Supergirl is already being hailed as great just because it is a female superhero show. We cannot judge it on this basis. Leave that shit at the door, and judge this show on its merits alone. Do not force an agenda on it. Let it live or die as a good or show no.
So apart from Kara where there any glimmers of hope? Why yes. Mechad Brooks as James Olsen was a great addition. His relationship with Superman is played upon a lot, and it would seem we are at the stage where he knows everything about Superman. Hopefully he will play the role of tutor in this group, cause clearly we will not be getting the man himself.
Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant worked as well. Embodying everything we think a powerful woman should be, I hope she becomes the moral foil Kara uses as she grows. You do not need to be rich, beautiful and successful to be a strong woman and I hope Kara can show this as time moves on.
The supporting roster is weak and is the main point of concern for me at this stage. I can’t see Alex Danvers becoming relatable at any point. I am hopeful we have not yet been introduced to that one friend Kara has that can pull this show together. Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott has a chance, but while not looking at the screen you could be convinced Cisco from Flash was saying his lines. I love Cisco, but we don’t need a clone on a different show.
I will definitely watch Episode 2. I like Kara and it really is down to that fact alone that I will continue to watch. James Olsen offers a glimpse of a good team member, and Cat Grant could offer a lot, but otherwise the supporting cast is weak at best. Here’s hoping that it only gets better.
