All this time I thought Steve was being cold, but as this post basically points out his eyes are very much alive. Chris Evans acting is so subtle that I did not notice it at first.

Steve eyes are glassy and full of remorse when Tony demands to be told the truth, and he prepares for the backlash by retreating within himself. By the time Tony punches him he is completely stoic.

This technique is something Steve probably developed during the war and perfected as the leader of The Avengers. He has to push his feelings aside.

Steve knows that the damage is done and no amount of apologies will right it. So instead he prepares himself by Tony’s reaction.

You know the most heartbreaking part of this whole sequence?

- Steve knows he has hurt Tony. He fucking knows that and it’s like he has accepted that he has no chance. No redemption. But he can’t let Tony hurt Bucky and so he fights. Not because he wanted to hurt Tony or because he was angry with Tony. But because he had to become the shield between Tony and Bucky. He literally became the shield.

So no, Steve Rogers was not abandoning Tony. He literally sent him a phone and told him to call him whenever he needed him. A man who was being hunted and should have remained incognito risked his safety just to let Tony know that he isn’t leaving him (in a highly emotionally constipated way, but he did nonetheless). The strangest part is that nobody understands these two broken men and their relationship like they do. They will go at each other’s throats but if the other is in danger, they put everything on the line for them. Tony risked being arrested himself just to help Steve. Steve risked being caught just to let Tony know that he’s still there. So all that bullcrap about them not being friends or shtick? Yeah, nope.
