Can I just say for a second, how Jonny talked about the Archivist being ace just, really touched me? Like, casual representation is the best kind of representation. The fact that they didn’t expect such a big reaction from Jon being ace so that they could just naturally put it in there is what made all the difference. He’s Asexual! and thats it! there isn’t some deeper meaning or anything thats just an aspect of his character. Thats why the impact was so huge, and honestly thats how i heard of TMA. and im *pretty* sure many other people too, considering the amount of ace people i’ve seen in this fandom relatively too, like, the world, casual gay rep has really started kicking off in the past few years and that is amazing, but most ace rep is usually revolving around being ace and that is just not something that is very appealing to most people. Jonny Sims just thought, I think the Archivist is ace, and proceeded with the rest of the story, not expecting anything. This touches my heart so much more than anything else could have. Simply, considering ace people not as special, but just as, existing.

More thoughts on the initial nerves of “oh no I heard this TMA character was ace but he’s cold and derisive, not ideal...” vs who Jon turned out to be is just. An accidental masterpiece.

It sailed past the danger of the stereotype to land in a viscerally relatable experience for a lot of us, especially those of us near Jon’s age who didn’t learn about asexuality until well into adulthood: Putting on that performance of distance and coldness because intimacy is dangerous and vulnerability invites mockery and shame. Where it’s easier to deflect questions about your relationships with “I don’t have time for it, I only care about work/studying/etc.” The facades that fall into place after years of feeling out of step with the rest of the world, until you defiantly insist you never cared in the first place.

The slow reveal of an ace character who seems to just be a cold workaholic at first to be this deeply caring, fearful, messy, devoted person speaks to me on a level I can’t quite describe.

Wow, this might be my... First TMA reblog??? Not on tumblr a lot but still... Anyways!!! I loved tma for many reasons but I have an especially soft spot for the first ever ace protagonist and main character I’ve ever... heard??

I wish I could just be as excited about Good Omens series 2 as everyone else seems to be, but I just can't stop feeling apprehensive about it because I am aroace and I fucking remember how uncomfortable it was to be aspec and in this fandom when series 1 came out.

Like, I can tell you right now, when that series comes out one of two (2) things is going to happen.

Possibly Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship will be explicitly clarified as romantic and/or sexual. Don't get me wrong, if this happens I will be very happy for mlm (and gay and mspec people in general) for getting representation that they are so often denied, but it will also mean losing what has been a very important source of queerplatonic representation for me personally, so I will likely have mixed feelings about it.

Alternatively, they may choose to keep it ambiguous (or even make them explicitly aroace)— in which case all the aphobic Good Omens fans who had only just quietened down will come squirming back out of the woodwork and start making things uncomfortable for aspec fans again.

I've already seen other aspec fans worrying about Option 2— and considering that the new series was only formally announced today, and I have already seen my first aphobic post that referenced it specifically just while I was scrolling through a related tag— it's not a stupid thing to worry about.

Get ready to be supportive of aspec fans in the run-up to this new series and after it comes out, because there's every chance that we're in for a pretty rough time.
