the thing is that two years later we still don’t really understand why they did it. they didn’t have to

like the reason it feels so jarringly insane is because it is not part of a coherent final season narrative, it’s a big glaring loose thread that is never mentioned again. you can tell misha kind of thought it was “good representation” but it obviously isn’t and was handled in the most insane homophobic way possible. so like we must assume it happened because a) robert berens wanted to strike a final blow in a years-long fight in the writers’ room which he couldn’t fully win and b) destiel is an occult and powerful force beyond the understanding and control of tv executives
