âDoes this mean itâs over?â, you whispered, voice trembling with fear, anticipating a negative answer to your question. Iwaizumi shook his head but didnât say anything. He clenched his fist, biting his lip to stop tears of frustration from leaking.
For the last hour, the two of you â a couple of three years - engaged in a heated argument about your future. While some time ago, which seemed like an eternity now, both of you were sure of your feelings, of what you expected from being with each other, that was not the case now. It all changed after Iwaizumi came back from his month-long trip to California with the offer of an internship after graduation. The two of you were too focused on making up for missing each other to even think about what that meant for your relationship, so you have been avoiding talking about it for over a year. That is until Iwa received a text from a friend that he met at UCI saying: âIâll be in Japan this summer, want to show me around?â
You were not the type to get jealous, you felt secure in your relationship and trusted your boyfriend. At least you thought you did. The text made you think about all the stories Iwa told you from his time in the US, about all the people he met, the parties he attended and that made you wonder where your place was overseas. Your doubts grew even stronger when said friend arrived in Tokyo. They took over all his free time, disregarding your position in his life. Iwa reasoned with you that it would only be for two weeks and that youâd have him back after that acquaintance is gone but it did not soothe your unwelcome feelings. The night that friend left Japan, you tried approaching Iwaizumi about his behavior, wanting to speak your mind about your doubts, however he brushed you off claiming he was too tired. That attitude dragged on for weeks until finally your patience ran low. His constant rejection made negative, chaotic feelings well up and you needed relief.
âHajime, we need to talk.â, You said firmly. You stood at the doorway of your shared bedroom, looking at him while he was changing. âWhat is it love?â, he said lazily without turning to look at you. For some reason that upset you a little. Youâd been desperately trying to communicate, to clear up any doubts, but all he was doing was planting more insecurities and you hated that.
âYou havenât been spending much time with me ever since that acquaintance showed up.â
Iwa chuckled at your short, straightforward explanation and said: âI never thought you could be the jealous type.â
You crossed your arms and said sternly: âPlease take this seriously, it has nothing to do with jealousy. Iâve been trying to talk to you about something for a while now, but youâve been completely disregarding my needs.â
Iwaizumi sighed at that: âI had a lot to do baby, I canât always be staying up all night talking, I need to keep my grades up in order to secure that internship at UCI.â
At that you tensed a little. You knew that Iwa was serious about going abroad for a while and you supported his decision, but you were wondering what that meant for the two of you. Would you go with him? Would he want you to go with him? Would you want to go?
âThatâs exactly what we need to talk aboutâ, you mumbled. âCan we do that another day? Iâm really tired from studying and training all day.â your boyfriend said, a little annoyance creeping into his voice.
You shook your head and commented reproachfully: âYou always say that, you always push it to another day, and never come back to it.â
âY/n please, I canât be running after you all the time. I have a future to think about.â, Iwa said, rolling his eyes.
âAm I not part of that future?â, you said quietly.
âThatâs not what I said.â, Iwa turned to look at you now, brows furrowed in annoyance. âBesides how would I know? A lot can happen in a few years.â
That was the last straw.
âIs it always going to be like this from now on?â You raised your voice a little. âYouâve been to California once and suddenly you treat me as if I was not a part of that life youâre building.â
Irritated, Iwa asked: âWhat do you mean?â
âWhat is it going to be like when you actually move overseas? Are you excepting me to come? Or to wait? Did you ever pause to ask me what I needed from this relationship?â, you continued, your mouth spilling all the questions youâve been bottling up unconsciously.
âYou can do whatever the hell you want, I donât expect anything from you. What is this even all about?â, Iwa asked, now furious.
âSo, youâre not counting me in when you plan the next few years?â, you asked, your mouth staying open, expressing disbelief.
âIs this about my friend from California? Are you actually jealous?â, Iwa threw his hands in the air, an exasperated sigh leaving him. âHajime are you even listening to me?â, you raised your voice even more.
The next hours were spent engaging in a screaming match, trading question after question. Accusation after accusation. That is until Iwaizumi exclaimed: âI donât want to be thinking about this kind of stuff, it only creates unnecessary drama. I want to have a good time abroad and not be bothered by doubts and questions.â
The silence that followed was deafening, almost threatening. The couple was staring at each other, panting until you finally put your worst fear into words: âDoes this mean itâs over?â
Iwaizumi let out a deep breath, pinched the bridge of his nose and suggested: âLetâs cool down first, then talk about this when weâre not in this hectic state.â
You scoffed: âThatâs always your solution, cool down, hope we forget about it and move on.â
When your boyfriend looked away, you shook your head and continued: âWe canât keep it up like this. Weâre not avoiding the heartbreak; weâre dragging it on until it gets unbearable and destroys us. If youâre not planning to have a future with me, Iâd rather we end it now.â
Iwaizumi brushed his hands over his face and said: âNo, thatâs not true. I want to be with you, I love you. Iâm sorry, I really am. Iâll try and do better. But please stop talking about breakups.â His eyes started glistening when you lowered yours. âWe were okay until now, werenât we? I love you y/n. I want a future with you.â
âWeâre not okay, we havenât been okay for a while and you ignoring that is part of the problem.â You sat down on the chair at your vanity. Iwaizumi crossed the room to crouch in front of you and took one of your hands in both of his. He brushed his thumb over your knuckles and whispered desperately: âIâll fix it, I promise.â
âHow did you go from screaming at me, making excuses about being too busy for me, to making such a promise? You canât blame me if I find it hard to believe. Look at how trying to talk about our needs escalated.â, a soft sob escaped your lips before you continued, your voice pained: âCanât you see how much has changed? Youâre putting something else first Hajime.â
Iwaizumi stared at you for a while, thoughts in unbearable chaos, then nodded, stood up and turned his back to you. âThen I guess Iâm not able to give you what you need from this relationship.â When you didnât respond he dropped his gaze to the floor and said: âIâm sorry.â
âThis is the end then.â, You said tiredly. Iwa didnât turn to look at you, he couldnât even dare to say anything as he didnât want you to hear the brokenness of his soul. You took a bag out of the closet, filled it up with some essentials all while tears were running down your face. Iwaizumi didnât move the whole time. When you were about to walk past him, you reached out to put a hand on his back. You felt his shoulders tremble ever so slightly, the one thing revealing how he really felt about this turn of events and whispered: âIâll be at a hotel. Iâll come get the rest of my stuff when I find a new place.â You proceeded to walk away, but a strong hand grabbed your wrist, keeping you from disappearing forever for just a moment longer. When you turned to look at your now ex-boyfriend you saw a face streaked with tears, bloodshot eyes and trembling lips.
âI never wanted it to end this way. I want you to know that. Please never forget that.â, he whispered desperately. You gathered the last of your strength and nodded. He then released your arm, letting your walk away. When he heard the front door closing, Iwaizumi knew he had lost you forever. Not only his lover, but his best friend, his best supporter and maybe even the love of his life.
