CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WTVC) — One family says their 5-year-old son with autism is being punished for giving his classmate a hug. East Ridge Elementary leaders say the boy overstepped his boundaries. But, his family says the whole thing is a big misunderstanding.

Nathan is a 5-year-old boy kindergartner at East Ridge Elementary. The principal says the school staff has talked with him several times. His guardian says the school has filed a report with the state.

Debi Amick, Nathan’s grandmother, posted in a private Facebook post:

“What do you do when a 5 year child is being labeled a sexual predator and accused of sexual harassment by the school system? It was disclosed that it will go in his record for the rest of his life that he is a sex offender. This child is austic, he comprehends and functions very different than your typical 5 year. What do you do? Who do you turn to for help when the school will not even listen to the child’s doctor when he explains the child’s difficulties in his comprehension of simple things such as boundaries. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is why the current lifestyle we're having is currently flawed so much that a kid not only being 5 years old is also autistic gets slapped with being a sex offender making him in the future unable to get into college, get a job or even likely travel outside of his own country!! I just can not believe that such a thing is even possible and is allowed to happen when it's only a fecking hug!! A HUG!!! In my years of being here.. I may be going onto 29 years but when I was 5 being a kid giving fellow classmates a hug was perfectly acceptable as it builds friendships and connections with your school friends.. but now seeing this.. This generation is gonna be fucked in the ass because of stupid shit like this happening! I hope this gets reversed and the boys parents sue the school for these actions!

Two parents in Washington state have been found guilty of murder after following the abusive parenting techniques advocated in the parenting book “To Train Up a Child”

MAJOR TRIGGER WARNING 

Some of the discipline techniques the Pearls teach include:

Using plastic tubing to beat children, since it hurts a lot but leaves fewer marks to alert authorities

Wearing the plastic tubing around the parent’s neck as a constant reminder to obey

“Swatting” babies as young as six months old with instruments such as “a 12-inch willowy branch,” thinner plastic tubing or a wooden spoon

“Blanket training” babies by hitting them with an instrument if they try to crawl off a blanket on the floor

Beating older children with rulers, paddles, belts and larger tree branches

“Training” children with pain before they even disobey, in order to teach total obedience

Giving cold water baths, putting children outside in cold weather and withholding meals as discipline

Hosing off children who have potty training accidents

Inflicting punishment until a child is “without breath to complain.”

My parents had this book. They used glue gun sticks instead of tubing or branches. The first time I saw glue stick in an art class (at about 6 years old), I got scared, because I didn’t know they had any use other than punishment.
