Veganism/Vegetarianism, sobriety, and voluntary celibacy/not seeking a relationship all engender a very similar bizarre outsized “reverse-FOMO” response from the general population
Immediately provide a reason why “you could NEVER” (this has not been asked)
Instantly push the boundaries that have been set (do you want to tryyy some??? Are you suuurrrre?)
bring up some Internet personality/celebrity/literally random other guy u know who also has that trait and is a huge bitch abt it
Claim the person is being self-centered and whiny for… saying something about themselves…
traumadump about some specific personal issues you have only tangentially related to the subject
All to like complete strangers… like i’m sorry I said why I haven’t tried the carnitas god
I actually think the real advantage tumblr has over other websites is the ability of "reblogging" to create posts with contributions from multiple users. This allows people to build on others' posts, whether that's derailing them with a terrible joke, drawing the scenario proposed as a comic, answering the question posed originally in lively essay format, or rewriting the previous interaction as a scene in Shakespearean iambic pentameter.
This is also why Tumblr is hard to make profitable. Individual users have relatively little power to create good content. It's interactions between users that actually creates the good content, and therefore, no one involved in the good stuff on Tumblr can really claim to "own" it or be the "creator."
Posts have to navigate through Tumblr to pick up the people that can add to them in a constructive way, and then when users interact, the whole interaction can spread across the website as a new evolution of the content. There's no way to simplify this process.
Theres a whole ecosystem running here. It's not as simple as Creators and Consumers, and you can't simplify it to that. That's not how ART works, let alone posts. There's symbiosis. The users that do the nitrogen fixation aren't the ones photosynthesizing. The detritivores can't also be the predators. The "rappers doing normal shit blog" has a different niche than the person that asks why Lil Wayne has socks on in the jacuzzi, who has a different niche than the person who says "those are his hooves, you bitch!"
It's like bioavailability, you see. The user that responds "Those are his hooves, you bitch" is like a predator on a high trophic level, unable to directly feed on producers, needing primary consumers to convert the post into a form that makes a punch line possible.
[ID: A screenshot of the original post with almost every line fully blacked out. The only letters still visible spell out "cocks." End ID]
Enter THE HOTEL OF THE MINDSCAPE.
HOTEL I think the sole advantage of this place, This hellish, warping, twisted tumbler, Lies buried in collaborative art. When sings again the song, another may The words repeat, and add upon their tale. To make a jest, or illustrate the piece, To answer, mock, or Shakespearificate.
This, too, is why 'tis hard to draw out gold: Thou cannot draw a pail from show'ring rain, Thou cannot catch the desert in a net, And, similar, thou cannot find the source Of so-called "content" when 'tis all around.
When written first, a song begins its life, But not the whole of art it has within -- To breathe the air of life and light and wit It must be shared, improved, attached upon, And then, at last, the multi-headed beast Can reach its full potential in its song.
This place is like a forest, ground to leaf, With bears and fish and bees and trees and worms. 'Tis not the simple "made, and then consumed", For, truly, art 'tis never simply that. There's symbiosis in these darkened woods, There's ebb and flow, the predator and prey: When songs are written of the Little Wayne, And of his hot tub stocking hooves most fine, The gentles here who say "they're hooves, you bitch" Are just as vital as the author's song. Each word in verse is sung by someone new, And in this way, the poem comes to fruit.
For though the wolf who stalks across the heath Takes diff'rent station than the grass beneath, Still, both are needed in this wood we carve, For with no grass for sheep, the wolves would starve.
Enter FALSE PUCHIKO, the CLOWN.
CLOWN 'Tis well and truly said, Madame Hotel, But please consider this riposte: a cock.
This is a old post and I have never seen this addition. Brilliant.
It's very endearing to me how many people are willing to keep an eye on a video feed so they can push a button and let a fish in the Netherlands get to the other side of a dam.
It is genuinely baffling to me, in a very kind and positive way, especially coupled with the local news continually going several shades of 'wtf, this thing is a roaring success again and we don't quite get why'. They've already quadrupled their capacity for simultaneous clicks and it's still nowhere near enough and there's just... Bewilderment.
I think people want to help the environment in small but tangible ways, which is hard right now because of.. well... because of The Horrors. And being able to say 'wow! I helped this creature cross a dam' makes you feel good.
I also think that most people can relate to a small, helpless creature trying to get from one place to another and there's a FUCKIN WALL in the way.
But to come back to point 1- Citizen Science fills a hole in the soul that wanted to go out on adventures and discover things when we were younger, but the study of it was hard or we didn't have the money or our schools were garbage. But you don't have to have a degree to do things like... press a button or download and use an app, or count or transcribe notes.
Anyways- here's some Citizen Science links if the Fish Doorbell makes you feel happy and you yearn for more ways to help scientists do stuff:
Foldit (folding proteins)
Fathomverse (sea animals)
Project Monarch (butterflies)
Bioblitz, an event where citizens identify as many species in an area within a period of time
Species Watch (animal species)
BOINC’s Compute for Science
Zooniverse is a website that hosts information on many citizen science projects
Label trees in aerial photos
Count cells in fossils and modern leaves
Digitize Atmospheric Data
Count penguins
US-based Citizen Science Database
eBird (bird identification)
Merlin (bird identification by sound)
iNaturalist (nature identification)
MapSwipe (collaboration between several Red Cross organizations and Doctors Without Borders, update vital geospatial data)

Burning fossil fuels is widely accepted as the leading cause of global warming, but a peer-reviewed study concludes that animal agriculture is actually the primary driver of climate change, responsible for 53% of global average temperature rise and 87% of total climate change. 🌊🌎🔥
at least 80% of people who say "i'd rather eat local meat/dairy than unethical imported vegan products!" don't actually do that and just eat unethical and imported meat and dairy
And even when they are being honest, it is utterly meaningless. Transport is a small contributor to emissions. For most food products, it accounts for less than 10%, and it’s much smaller for the largest GHG emitters. In beef from beef herds, it’s 0.5%. You can read about this in detail here, but the headline is that in terms of emissions, what you eat is far more important than where it is from.
As George Monbiot points out in his book Regenesis (an excellent and very well researched book on this topic): ‘You would have to ship a kilo of dried peas roughly one hundred times around the world before it’s greenhouse gases matched those of a kilo of local beef.’ Local food has other advantages in terms of food security, supporting local businesses etc. but the climate impact is negligible.
In terms of ethics, the comparison is even worse. How close an animal was to your house when they had their throat slit is of no moral relevance whatsoever. There is this strange sort of geographical bias where people assume that all the real cruelty must be happening somewhere else, inflicted by foreigners who don’t know or don’t care about how to treat their animals properly.
Almost everyone I ever speak to from any country thinks that their country’s animal agriculture system is less cruel than everyone else’s. Unless you have personally visited the farm and the slaughterhouse, you have absolutely no reason to assume that a cow raised and slaughtered locally was treated or killed more humanely than a cow killed somewhere else. The assumption that local is always better is purely wishful thinking.
propaganda I'm not falling for:
every human being needs to eat meat in order to survive, and the amount of meat needed to be consumed is an entirely individual and personal choice
the only way to obtain this necessary meat is by force-breeding, imprisoning and industrially slaughtering billions of animals every year
animal agriculture can be "regenerative" and "environmentally sustainable"
animals exist to be resources that we can exploit/products that we can buy & sell
this is funnier the earlier in march you reblog it it
✨ it’s march ✨

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are feeling the wrath of constituents as their phone lines light up with complaints, worries and confusion over Elon Musk's efforts to gut government programs and fire longtime civil servants.
Good. Kill him.
americans are born with guns in our hands and you MISS????? what is this country coming to
Source
Begging everyone to stop asking this rhetorical question and, instead, demand our elected officials do something about it
begging everyone to stop expecting politicians to give a shit and to start making a plan to blow up a pipeline
begging everyone to act like they're gonna go blow up pipelines or something else radical to save the earth when they can't even go vegan
You expect a revolution but you won't even change your breakfast
Sure, you can care about being kind to animals! But only if your ideas of kindness fit neatly within and preserve the current systems. Sure, you can question animal ethics, but don't you dare come to any conclusions that threaten capital! Or threaten people's freedom to drink milkshakes and watch rodeos and race horses and breed cute little wiener puppies. Sure you can love animals! Aww, we all love animals! But don't you dare let your love go deeper than aesthetic appreciation and wholesome-ified exploitation. Don't let your love radicalize you into questioning things too deeply. Don't let your love become a threat to what is normal. /s
Furthermore, unless you actually care about animal rights, and are vegan/vegetarian etc., then shut the fuck up and stop bawling about PETA killing a few animals because you’re in no position to attack them when you’re probably paying for billions of animals to be slaughtered just so you can have chicken wings for lunch. Also, most of those ‘PETA Kills’ articles were actually set up by a guy called Richard Bermane, a wealthy tobacco, alcohol and meat industry lobbyist who is literally paid to slander groups that threaten certain industries. Tumblr: not checking its sources, critically thinking or being ethically consistent since 2007.
‘Noo sorry indigenous/disabled/black/poor vegan commenting on my post about how veganism is for rich, able-bodied white people. I wanted to use your group as pawns in my anti-vegan arguments but I didn’t actually want to hear from any of you...'
non-vegans are genuinely so ignorant about what goes into meat production. pretending that worker's rights abuses don't happen. that non-human animals don't eat more plants than humans do. every single critique of plant ag applies to the meat industry as well. animal ag just has the added addition of government sanctioned animal abuse.
