i have a question for my american followers: did you learn about rethorical figures (figures of speech) in school? if so, when? and if so, do you reckon all of your peers learnt them or did you learn them because you took a specific class?

hi! ive been raised most of my life in america so i hope this helps. for some context i do not go to a public school, so my experience may be a little different from others.
1. yes i learned figures of speech in school. the first time they were introduced was sixth grade english (about 11-12 years old for context) but only for the purpose of memorizing these devices as vocabulary terms, not for analyzing anything.
2. my school is extremely small, so my sixth grade class was THE sixth grade class, about 20 people totally. so yes all my peers learned them at once, it wasn’t a specific class.
3. we didn’t start using the devices to analyze until 8th grade (13-14 years old). we practiced analyzing and finding examples of such figures of speech within our reading assignments/poetry selections. our teachers first started pointing them out to us but by the end of the year we were expected to pick up on them ourselves.
4. sophomore and junior year (16-18 years old) was when we were REALLY hit with analyzing. like, that was all we did honestly. so while we “learned” the devices on a very basic scale in middle school, we didn’t truly apply our knowledge of the devices until later in high school.

there’s a big difference between “this show contains things that are morally wrong” and “this show contains things that are morally wrong and frames them in a positive and harmless light and/or shows an amount of [insert x morally wrong thing] to the audience that feels unnecessary, gratuitous, and/or fetishistic” and it’s very very important to remember that distinction when criticizing media
one of the things that amazes me the most is how throughout the first read i loved andrew and neil so much and thought kevin was an annoying b*tch. the second read though? i am only a kevin day stan from now on. andrew and neil??? i dont know who these men are. they could be walking down the street and i wouldnt know a thing.
Neil: hope was a dangerous, disquieting thing, but he thought perhaps he liked it.
Me: ok.
Kevin: *exists*
Me: wOw. holy mother of DAMN. So deep. So exquisite. I have never seen—never. Such PERFECTION. My heart cannot take it. Just can’t. Thank you for your service. My lord and savior. Wow.

does this come with the equivalent of master chef junior where they coach a team of young exy players and are very patient and kind with them?
okay but Neil would be super awkward at first because how does one even interact with a tiny human? He’s received a lengthy pep talk by several of the ex-foxes (plus Wymack, who called him as soon as he found out from Kevin – “Don’t traumatize any of those kids Josten or so help me God”) on how NOT to behave with these kids. So you have Neil tentatively working with them, being even more socially inept than usual (the times he’s had to interact with kids could be counted on one hand + with all those scars he thinks the kids will find him scary and intimidating). But the kids turn out to just be stoked to be around him. To them, he’s not the scary mobster guy who tears reporters apart, he’s Cool Striker Neil Josten who does amazing things on the field and says funny stuff to reporters and just so happens to look like a cool ass pirate. The kids love him. Plus, he’s basically their own height so he doesn’t have to bend and do that “talk down on kids” thing that children hate. And on that note, Neil doesn’t baby-talk them either, he addresses them like he would any other person (with a bit more kindness) and the kids Love It, they feel all grown up and important.
And then there’s Kevin. Kevin who is incredibly kind and encouraging. Who really, genuinely cares about these kids’ performance. Who sees their potential and their great assets. The first thing he does is assess their strengths and re-arrange them to create a new team. The kids are a bit taken aback by this, why would they change their positions? But Kevin doesn’t let out, he encourages them, he pushes them and hypes them up. He compares them to Neil and himself (“Did you know Neil started out as a backliner? Look at him now!” or “I learnt how to play with my right hand after years of playing with my left”) and the kids are SOLD, they can be just like their idols. They start to perform better, they start to feel better about themselves – bolder, happier. They have more fun because the new positions match perfectly with their personalities and abilities! They become so good that Kevin actively compliments them all the time (in one episode, they even bring out Andrew as a bonus-challenge, no one expects them to score on him but one tiny striker does it and Kevin praises him until they have to forcefully shut him up), The kids worship Kevin even more now, he’s not just Exy’s Queen to them: he’s Exy’s God. And he’s kind and charming and cool and they love him.
When the show ends, every kid cries. Each and every one of them. As a gift, they bring them crayon-drawings and they surprise both Kevin and Neil by decorating their Exy sticks with a patchwork of drawings and signatures and just anything really. They’re customized: Neil’s has a lot of foxes decoupaged on it, and pirate hats and fast-themed iconography. Kevin’s has queens and soft-themed drawings. They love it and of course no one expects them to use them in matches (so that they don’t get ruined), but when the official pictures for the new national Olympic Team come out, Neil and Kevin are shown proudly clutching their decorated racquets.
just then, in that moment, the thought of gansey leaving for d.c. without him was unbearable. they had been a two-headed creature for so long, ronan-and-gansey. he couldn’t say it, though. there were a thousand reasons why he couldn’t say it.
