Curiosity 6U8A0051 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: Gentoo penguins have an extremely inquisitive nature. Of all the penguins at York Bay, only the Gentoo seemed truly interested in what we were doing. Each time I would lay down in the sand a handful would come running. The Magellanic penguins did their best to run away, no matter where I was. The few King penguins there, acting regally, seem genuinely aloof and disinterested. I positioned myself for the sunset on the edge of a dune-side colony. The dunes are quite massive and the beach falls into shade long before true sunset. Amicable and curious the Gentoo kept me entertained for most of the rest of that afternoon.

Sea Lion Island: Gentoo penguins make a run for the ocean! Just loved seeing them on the white sand beach and sunshine. The conditions allowed for brief reflections in the wet sand - before disappearing into the sea. Yes, more penguins to come. I’m back to share my favorite photos from a visit to the Falkland Islands in November/December 2018.

The Gentoo Pace C7A2879 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: Keeping up with Gentoo penguins on land isn’t much of an issue but these little buggers are the fastest penguins in the water, outpacing any other penguin species on the planet. Their inquisitive nature makes them a pleasure to watch and photograph. If you lay on the sand at least one or two will come running almost as if they want to make certain that you are not injured. I am intrigued by the prospects of their motivation.

The Long Walk Home 6U8A3504 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: As the sun sets, the beach on the east coast of the Falklands falls into shadow. A lone Gentoo penguin makes the long trek across the beach and climbs up the large dunes that border the beach to the grassy plains above. It’s not alone. They will all move from the beach before dark. But the fastest swimming penguin in the world moves slowly on foot, ascending the incline with purpose and care, watching every step.

Fast and Furious C7A5768 by Daniel D'Auria Via Flickr: Gentoo penguins aren’t known for their size, but they are known for their speed. These medium sized penguins are not only the fastest swimming penguins in the world, they’re actually the fastest swimming “birds” in the world. They are also extremely tolerant, amicable, and distinctively curious. When laying on the sand, it wasn’t unusual to have one or two run fast and furiously up to me to investigate what I was up to.
