After 3 months in a coma followed by a slow recovery process that has been going on a year and a half Simon finally feels more confident about his mutations, he doesn't try to self mutilate anymore(they just grow back), of course he doesn't love the damn things but he barely thinks of it in his daily life between taking care of the greenhouse and his studies and Grace's movie nights.

That's when Grace asks about his gills with a weird glint in his eyes.

"Nope" says simon "I'm not a lab rat for you to experiment on"

"Come on Sy, is just a few swabs maybe a tiny little sample" Grace says with puppy eyes and all that "For me? For science?"

"Yeah, still a solid no. For the last tree sake, go study your rock buddies Ry!" At this point Simon returns his attention to his growing beans on the trellis.

"Sy, I swear, I'm not that much of a mad scientist to dissect the man I love for science. It's just a few samples"

"The man you what?"

"I... What?"

Anyways winged!au Grace has wings... or had they got clipped when he was caught midst flight trying to escape, wings would take too much space and generally are hard to keep. They didn't have the proper eva suits for winged people and they didn't have the time to develop it. So they just cut it out.

Grace has a hard time at first he doesn't know why walking was so difficult, then he notices the scars and turns out he was overcompensating for a weight that wasn't there anymore. Somehow remembering his wings was worse it opened the door for phantom pains, and instincts that he couldn't satiate.

Winged people all got taken with the quiet rapture they were already a minority and most didn't like being in enclosed spaces so none where in ships or stations when it happened. Simon's mother however always told him of his grandpa who loved taking her to fly when she was a little girl. Simons dreams of it open skies, wind in his hair, the idea of wind is almost foreign to him he was so little and Mars only had a few terraformed plains with simulated wind.

After the mutations caused by the blood Simon starts to develop leathery wings like those of a bat or a demon, it's gory and painful he is barely conscious through it, by the time he somehow finds himself floating in SM13 in space and is found by the erid's spacial team, he already has them fully developed.

At first simon hates the appearance of the wings, but grace makes him see the beauty in it, grace wants to teach simon to fly but he is having a hard time balancing so Grace and Rocky start making him a prosthetic arm. Until this point Simon was a little pissed off by grace weird obsession with his wings and flying simon felt like he was being either treated like a science experiment or like a pet.

I see two paths this could go(i don't know who is going to get this reference either) but I see two paths. One Simon goes off and has a heated discussion with Grace lots of swearing, only to say something that really triggers Grace who then takes of his shirt shows him his scars and marchs of to lock himself in the lab or his room.

Two Simon gets a glimpse of the scars and finds graces medical files on the mary it is heart breaking and he is enraged and sad.

Simon goes to adrian and rocky and talk. Not sure what happens after this, but eventually Simon gets rocky to make prosthetic wings for grace and both learn to fly together.

Rocky and Adrian and the other eridians learn a lot about winged humans after that. Nesting habits, preening(which is not quite the same with graces prosthetics and simon's fleshy wings), mating flights, mating singing and dancing...

Anyone is welcome to take this and develop further.

A little PHM headcanon about Grace's assets and compensation.

Anyone who read the book knows if was there any talk of monetary compensation to the families of the astronauts in PHM?

Like, I know they were willing to die for their families and friends, to try to save earth, because they say it in the movie, but there's no way they aren't getting paid and it's not like themselves are going to receive it right?

So... What about Grace's? "He doesn't have family, friends not even a dog (ouch)", I don't think his "work" would have gone without compensation.

Since earlier today this little though of Stratt doing all the math of what old be Grace's payment and distributing it as donations for schools and STEM projects and writing it down, so Grace would find it with Grace's belongings. Like the other members of the crew had pictures and letters.

(I just realized that in the movie he finds the belongings of his crewmates but very little of himself and with his amnesia what kind of depressing thoughts he might have had on why he didn't have as many personal things as they had)

TL;DR. I just don't like the idea of Grace's (unwilling) sacrifice being "free"
