The Sahara sand viper (Cerastes vipera), is a small, venomous viper endemic to the deserts of North Africa and the Sinai Peninsula and it has a very special skill. It can hide itself by burying itself in the sand. They do this in order to wait for prey. They wiggle their tails to attract a potential meal and then lunge out from under the sand to chomp them.

Photographer Zac Herr had the brilliant idea of giving a captive-bred Sahara sand viper the opportunity to show off its special skill in a pool full of rainbow sprinkles instead of sand. pacinthesink provided the snek and jdrrising recorded the results:

Fears Fenrir - Being in the dark without any light sources. Renai - Thunderstorms. Aka - being caged. Nazareth - Failure and needles

Fen:“I’m not really afraid of the darkness itself- in some cases it’s a welcome break from a busy day or the intro to sleep. In that case, it’s a zero. But if, say, there was a potential unwelcome stranger that I was aware of in the darkness, like, a duck, then my anxiety definitely spikes to a seven or eight...”

Renai:“???!!!” (Fen Translation: Renai does not mind the loud noises an lightning- it reminds her of Aka- but she does hate the rain and wind because it makes it difficult for her to fly and generally function. I don’t think she quite understands the danger of storms, so her fear probably only rests at a two or lower.)

Aka:“You dare ask how I feel about being caged? I loathe the thought and will combat anyone who dares try to imprison me again.” (Fen Translation: Aka is never one to admit his fears. Of course, he is afraid of being caged and enslaved again- though it comes out in the form of anger. He’s gotten a bit better, but I would still say his fear lays at around a five or a six.”

Naz:“Needles? Eh, they’re just need- eh... Yeah, no, I don’t like needles or... Stabby sharp things in general. Not to the part of irrationality but I think I’m feeling a solid five on that one. As for failing... That’s something that’s on my mind all the time- it weighs me down and I fear it in more ways than one. FAE has helped me though! I’m not as... Cripplingly afraid of it as I was before, but failure is still something worth fearing. I’d say it lays at about a seven.”

For fears: Naz, drowning; Fini, fire; Renai, water; Fen, that somehow, somewhere, at any time, a duck is watching ouo

Naz:“Drowning? Well... I do find the ocean fascinating- it’s so vast and pretty and full of mysteries, but there’s always something sort of lurking there in the depths... That being said, I think drowning would be an awful way to die- I’m not particularly afraid of swimming, but drowning... Maybe a 7 or 8 ish?”

Fini:“Fire isss bad.” (Naz Translation: They’re not really afraid of fire- in general it’s hard for Fini to feel fear since they thrive off the stuff. If anything, they mostly feel irritation and anger, so I’d have to say it’s a zero.

Renai:“!!!!!” (Fen Translation: Renai doesn’t have anything against water- she can appreciate but generally she dislikes getting wet because it makes it hard to fly and she gets cold. Perhaps it would be about a 3, for her.)

Fen:“You know, I never considered this fear, but now that you put this thought in my mind I feel much less secure and will now have the lurking suspicion that something, somewhere (regardless of whether it’s a duck or not), is watching, and that does not sit right with me at all. The idea is anxiety inducing and now I’m not sure I’ll be able to sleep peacefully tonight.” (That would put him at a 7-9 ish xD)
