Pocan Wins
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- State Assemblyman Mark Pocan has won the U.S. House race for Wisconsin's 2nd District, keeping the Madison-area seat with Democrats.
The seat was held by Tammy Baldwin for seven terms, but she gave it up to run for the U.S. Senate.
Pocan defeated Republican challenger Chad Lee on Tuesday. But the election outcome wasn't all that surprising because the district, which covers Madison and its surrounding areas, is reliably Democratic.
Like Baldwin, Pocan is openly gay and has championed greater rights for gays and women. He has also served as a co-chairman of the Assembly's Joint Finance Committee, which he credits for giving him valuable experience in writing budgets.
Baldwin had held the seat since 1998.

We continue to follow breaking news out of Madison this morning. Emergency crews are investigating a home explosion that occurred around 4:45 a.m. at 413 S. Midvale Blvd. We are told at least 2 people (adult children) have been taken to UW Hospital. Four people were in the home at the time of the explosion (father, mother & two adult sons). The father and mother have been taken to the hospital by Madison police to be with their children. NBC15 reporter Tim Elliott says there was a smell of natural gas in the area when he arrived at the scene. (Note: natural gas normally is odorless. But a scent is often added to the gas so people will recognize it immediately). There is no word yet on the victim's injuries, or any estimate of damage to the home. MG&E crews have arrived on the scene to evaluated the situation.
Thanks to Mark Hussong who sent us this photo from this morning's hotel fire in Wisconsin Dells. Details: Firefighters battled an early morning fire at the Carousel Inn and Suites. Multiple fire departments were called to the 1000 block of Wisconsin Dells Parkway just after 2:00 a.m. The Carousel Inn & Suites is located on the strip -- directly across the street from Noah's Ark. Everyone got out safely. There were no reports of injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation this morning.
We've posted a list of firework displays across southern Wisconsin at NBC15.com.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: There is a shortage of Good Humor ice cream
The beer and brat cookout at the Governor's mansion is now underway. Governor Walker pledged to hold the event the evening he won the recall election as a way to bring Republicans and Democrats together. The event is closed to the media. Protesters have gathered outside the gate. Here's a photo from the scene.
Plenty of Wisconsin food and beverages will be on the menu today when Gov. Scott Walker hosts his so-called "brat summit." He's invited members from both political parties to join him at a cookout --- hoping the event will help him mend some fences.
GOP's Moulton tops Dexter in Wis. Senate recall
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican state Sen. Terry Moulton has defeated Democrat Kristen Dexter in Tuesday's recall elections. Democrats angry with Republican Gov. Scott Walker's contentious plan that all but ended most public workers' union rights forced the governor, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, Fitzgerald and two other GOP senators into recalls. They also were trying to capture an open seat in Tuesday's elections. Walker claimed the plan was needed to control the state budget, but many public workers opposed erosion of their bargaining rights. Dexter was making a bid to rejoin the Legislature after losing her state Assembly seat in the 2010 elections. Moulton, from Chippewa Falls, was first elected to the Senate that same year.
