"Freedom Forever. WTC 9/11" is scrawled on a beam near the top of the gleaming, 104-story One World Trade Center. "Change is from within" is on a beam on the roof. Another reads: "God Bless the workers & inhabitants of this bldg."
Amazing video of the "things from the heart" scrawled on steel beams being hoisted into the sky to construct One World Trade Center.

STRIKE. Not all students will be affected by the school bus strike that began Wednesday morning. Check this website to see if your child's routine will be changed.
If your route is affected, city officials want you to know the following:
All students who currently receive yellow bus service are eligible to receive a MetroCard. Parents should request a MetroCard from the main office of their child's school.
Parents of pre-school and special education children requiring transportation from their home directly to their school, as well as parents of general education children in grades K through 2, may also request a MetroCard for the parent or guardian to act as the child’s escort to school.

The fact that the Jets would be making big changes this offseason was no secret even before the team officially fell out of playoff contention and they didn't try to build up any suspense.
Jets owner Woody Johnson released a statement a little after 9 a.m. on Monday morning announcing that general manager Mike Tannenbaum would not be returning to the team in 2013. Johnson also announced that Rex Ryan would remain as head coach for a fifth season.

Iconic New Jersey house, split by Sandy, demolished by owner. It appeared on the cover of Newsweek, a symbol of the powerful storm's devastation. But the owners of this Union Beach home say it's too expensive to save. Brian Thompson was there Friday as it was demolished, and spoke to the owner, who vows to rebuild.
Dad of Newtown Student Thanks Hero Teacher. Michael Gargiulo talks to the father of a student who survived the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary. He says her teacher, Kaitlin Roig, saved her life. "We as parents forever owe our gratitude to Ms. Roig," he said.

Welcome to Brooklyn, Mitik! This baby walrus was rescued off the Alaskan coast and is now headed for the New York Aquarium in Coney Island.
"These pictures make me think that she loves me, that she cares about me," said Toby Shi, tears falling freely down his face in the Brooklyn apartment he shares with his grandfather. His mother, Jian Ling Lin, was arrested in Alexandria, Va. during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement sting four months ago but wasn't charged with anything. She remains in a detention center, leaving 10-year-old Toby and his 6-month-old sister, Mia, with their grandfather. The photos provide some comfort for Toby, who cried showing them to NBC 4 New York. "But I miss my mom."
New Jersey special needs students learn with iPads. Brian Thompson filed this remarkable story for our Education Nation series about a school in New Jersey utilizing iPads to help teach students with autism and Down Syndrome. They're also helping the students communicate. Enrique Mendez, 9, a child with Down Syndrome who is unable to speak, was able to use his tablet's synthesized voice to express himself to his mother

#ESB Shooting. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly describes the details of the shootout that erupted outside the Empire State building Friday morning as Mayor Bloomberg offers condolences to the family and friends of the 41-year-old coworker who was shot.
Peacock! We like covering peacock stories around here, but this one is really interesting. The brightly-colored bird's been hanging around Kew Gardens, Queens, stomping around lawns and flying up on roofs. But nobody knows for sure where it came from -- no zoos have reported a missing peacock or peahen, and nobody's tried to claim it.
