Right- so where are the Thomas Godolkin/Cipher enthusiasts? He’s one of the best written villains I’ve ever seen. He doesn’t top Hans Landa (Christopher Waltz, ily) ofc, but he definitely comes close.

That final reveal had me jaw-dropped istggggg

Hello beloveds~ Long time no see, right? I miss you all so terribly. And I know I have many asks and DMs still unanswered—I am sorry. I read everything. I want to be there for you but I try to get some time in for writing too, as I believe I need that to be a human person. It's kind of like "save yourself before you save another" kinda situation. I'm only now just starting to write again, after all these unnerving months. I suppose we found the right cocktail of medication...

Today I share with you something I wrote very recently—some of you have heard of it before. The working title is Scars. It is a rewrite of a very old WIP I had to let go. I realize I've been overwhelmed for a long time. I weaved it with other stories that were living in my drafts and in my mind. I still feel awkward writing and it's still extremely difficult, but sitting down and writing the words you are about to read was the most fun I had in a long time. I am happy to share them with you. Thank you all so much to anyone who will read them.

# Scars (working title)

genre: dystopian ; wordcount: ~1k ; no major warnings apply: brief mention of being restrained.

Your boots were a size too big, but at least the leather was supple and the sole was quiet enough on hard surfaces.

Moving at daytime or nighttime made no difference—maybe they could spot you better in daylight but they had nightvision equipment anyway. No, one really had to learn their movements, track daily shipments and security rounds, and figure out their logistics in great detail. This took time. This, sometimes, could take weeks. The stalking and taking notes and circling the perimeter to look for cameras or watchtowers. 

By the time one had acquired the data they needed, it was often too late for whatever endeavor they intended to pursue. Sometimes it was to steal food and gear, other times it was intel they wanted. Other times, though, they wanted to rescue someone from the inside—a loved one who had been taken. Often it was too late. Either the Alliance killed you or they took you further; nothing could be done in either case. 

You had been theirs, once.

Two or three lifetimes ago it felt like. You tried to remember the woman you were back then but found that your memories of her had faded like a photograph left in the sun for too long. You could see there had been something there, only it had no color, no distinct shapes. It was just remnants. An echo.

You were a wraith who had once been something more, but it wasn’t you doing the haunting—there were other ghosts following you everywhere you went.

It was not daytime. It was also not nighttime. It was not even dusk—it was the few minutes around it where the world turned gray and came to a still. The Alliance guys would be switching from day to night gear back at their camp. The birds had retreated. They did so consistently earlier these days, but that was what October was for.

There were a few stray squirrels still about and it was a little windy, so the conditions were just perfect.

You had noticed this Alliance encampment on your way two whole weeks back. Well, twelve days to be more precise. It was one of the biggest ones you had seen—two or three acres surely. They had cut down a sizable portion of the forest for it and to have access to the river. You had done as much recon as you could, but not too much. Just what you needed. You did not take risks with this one.

You could have just walked away. Go further north, where their scouting missions would be much less frequent. But that would mean going off course. And you only had this map. And you only knew this way. Perhaps you would find another map if you went. 

But maybe you would not.

So it was better to invest a week or two and figure out how to get across. For you at least. Maybe someone less foolish would rather go around.

Just. Not you.

You left at the time of the day when the world is holding its breath. All you had were the ghosts in your head and a pair of combat boots that were a little too big for you. You had learned to be quiet in the forest just like outside of it, but the rustling of leaves slowed you down significantly. 

Still, you went. And the sun had already disappeared behind the horizon, leaving just a touch of lavender in a gray sky. The air smelled crisp and fresh, almost like it would snow. It was cold enough that it just might, but at least your coat would keep you warm. The air smelled like decaying leaves and frost. When the wind picked up, the air smelled like the fires burning at the Alliance camp. You could see glimpses of them from afar, their warm amber flames like beacons in the darkening forest, illuminating their surroundings.

It was almost beautiful. You wished you could find it beautiful. This, the faint stain of lavender in the sky, the quiet of the world, the clean air, or anything else. Anything, really.

You were swaying with the room. Left, right, left. Right, left, right. This was what you thought when you came to, or, rather, almost woke up. It wasn’t quite like going up for air—it was more like drifting underwater but never surfacing. Close enough to the other side that you could hear a muffled, distorted version of it. Close enough that you could almost see it. Almost. 

The first time you woke up lasted just a few seconds. You swayed with a room that was moving very fast and went back under. 

Later, you came to again, this time a little closer to the surface. It felt less like drowning and more like swimming, only the waves were still trying to take you away. This time, you could tell the ‘room’ was a vehicle of sorts and that two people were sitting on either side of you. They were still and quiet, and you had just enough consciousness to wonder if they were swimming too, or if they had another purpose. 

It was cold.

You went back to sleep. 

It was still cold when you woke up the third time, and pitch black. This time, you managed to flutter your eyelids, but it had very little impact on the lighting—it went from very dark to dark. And you did not have it in you to do it again. It seemed like you had never been this tired in your entire life. You found yourself wishing to sleep again quickly, but it took a little longer than the other times.

You were not in the same vehicle as earlier but had no recollection of moving or being moved. Yet you felt as though your body was still in motion, faster even than before, yet steadier somehow. An airplane? A boat? You couldn’t tell. It was still cold. Your pulse was slow. It was then that you realized there was something over your eyes that prevented the light from getting in, effectively blinding you. It was tied behind your head, but the fabric was soft. It had not been secured too tightly. It felt, almost, like a pair of warm hands on your eyelids.

The same fabric had been used to tie your hands—they rested on your knees. Just as limp as the rest of your body.

You slept again.

Goodbye note: So... that's just it! It really isn't much but it's all I had. I am working on something else also while "healing" before I'm well enough to return to my regular stories. Does that make sense? I hate the idea of botching those stories in which I poured so much of myself already...

To those who have been here this whole time, whether I post or not, whether I'm enough of a human person or not to respond to asks and DMs: thank you. I owe you a lot, but what I owe you doesn't have words. It's something I carry in my heart. I am grateful in a way that cannot be expressed, and I wish you all only the best. To those I have disappointed and I keep disappointing—I'm sorry.
