a rant about willoughby and ethel
obviously nettles dropped yesterday and its captivating to say the least, but i feel like despite all the traction I've seen about the lyrics, everyone has kind of brushed over the actual concept of the line 'this was all for you'. in all fairness maybe i missed the hype since i've never heard this before its official release/ didnt listen to it on yt/soundcloud (the only unreleased songs i typically listen to are live house in nebraska and punish demo 2, crying during sex and dust bowl- which, by the way, im going to lose my shit when that drops on the new album) but as i was saying all day that line has been on my mind. ALL of it was for him. all of the pain and suffering she went through. being abused, trafficked, abandoned, pimped out, addicted, literally fucking murdered and cannibalised. none of it would've happened if she had willoughby. and yet, she seemingly isnt bitter. theres no sense of resentment only painful pining that almost kills the listener, like in sun bleached flies as she reflects on her life and is reminded of all the trauma she experienced and is still dreaming of their house in nebraska ,even crying out 'oh willoughby' as she lets go of all the suffering she endured. it just completely rips me apart tbh but that is what true true love does to someone. and i am going to be incredibly insufferable on here and irl up until the album release and afterwards cus i got tour tickets mehehhehe
maybe im just super into lesbians but what if ethel cain pushed herself to fall in love with willoughby and built him up as this huge savior in her head without actually considering his needs to fill the inexplicable hole in her heart left by janie as she fell in love with her boyfriend and drifted away from ethel,,,
what if she was like 'well janie finds this relationship with her boyfriend more important so it must mean everything for me to fall in love with a man too' but now without janie shes a hollow shell of herself and obsesses over willoughby to provide meaning to her life. not just willoughby, but any man, as seen in preacher's daughter where she tries to find love after willoughby from more... questionable men (and gets murdered as a result 😭 ).
oh and what if she was admiring holly with not just envy but like. a little bit of... fruitiness.... perhaps..... like a 'do i wanna date her or be her' situation except bc shes in a small conservative town she hasnt even considered the possibility of being gay. do you see my vision
this is 100% not what hayden intended w this album but this is a fun interpretation to consider <3

i find it funny that conservatives try to paint me calling for the death and destruction of multi-billionaire CEOs as some radical "woke liberal" standpoint. as if that even has anything to do with politics, especially in this era of surface level circus politics. the same way they try to politicize the hurricanes or the wildfires destroying parts of america, as if climate change is somehow a red vs. blue issue. it's no secret i'm from a deeply conservative family in the sticks of florida and i still grew up hearing "i fought the law and the law won". the healthcare system has fucked each and every member of my family in a different way at one point or another, as is the case with pretty much every family in this scorched earth nation. remember when country music, the genre currently associated the heaviest with the most conservative faction of america, used to be staunchly anti-government and about sticking it to the man? remember when the coal miners, grandfathers to the "trump-er hillbillies" of appalachia that everyone loves to write off as ignorant, fought tooth and nail for unionization because the companies that were built off their labor didn't give a shit if they lived or died? since when has "upholding traditional values" gone hand in hand with... defending lawmakers and oil tycoons. my family and i complain about the same issues at the dinner table. the men in charge better hope they can keep their digital smokescreens running as long as they can because the moment the rednecks and the hippies lay down their swords long enough to realize they have the same enemy, all hell is gonna break loose.
