What to do when you’re having a poor executive function day/been sitting in front of your computer for a few hours wondering why you can’t do your work:
1. Take a deep breath - Let out all that anxiety over the project you’re doing so you can think clearly
2. Pull up a clean sheet of paper and something to write with - You can use a fresh word doc, new page in your journal or planner or whatever else works for you, the idea is that after this you will have a physical list to look at to help keep you on task.
3. Identify your obstacles (i.e. What is keeping you from doing this task?) - For example: Is it scary? If so, why? Does it feel too hard? Is there something else that you feel needs to be done first? Write these down!
4. Plan how to overcome your obstacles - This can take some creativity and some thinking to best figure out how to overcome the obstacle. I’ve included examples below for potential plans.
Example 1:
Obstacle: I don’t know the best way to approach this task.
Plan: Brainstorm on paper ways that you might be able to approach this task. Google ways to accomplish this task. Review lecture notes or example homework problems on how to accomplish this task. Ask a friend/coworker/classmate how they might start the task. Write down everything you feel might be relevant until you feel like you know where to start and where to go.
Example 2:
Obstacle: This feels too big and overwhelming so I don’t want to do it.
Plan: Break down the tasks into smaller, tiny tasks. Make them as small as you need to make them feel manageable. Write down all these tasks check them off as you go.
Example 3:
Obstacle: I’m waiting for someone to get back to me with comments on this project but they’re taking too long.
Plan: Follow up with this person and identify what you can do without their comments. For example, if you’re waiting for someone to sent you a section of a project or paper, write your section to the best of your ability. Can you have someone else review this project and still get good feedback. Or tell yourself you’ll revise/edit your project and integrate their comments later when you get to them. Often when I identify what feels out of order, I can move past it or put it farther down my list so I’m no longer just stuck waiting.
5. Encourage yourself and commend yourself for filling in the gaps actively that your brain couldn’t do on it’s own today. - You’re doing a great job!
Sincerely,
A Graduate Student with Adult ADHD
💡🇫🇷 Ça rentre par une oreille, ça ressort par l’autre
lit.: It goes in by one ear, it goes out by the other (ear)
→ When someone forgets an information immediatly after hearing it or beeing told.
Ex : Il est terrible cet enfant : tu peux lui dire tout ce que tu veux, ça rentre par une oreille et ça ressort par l’autre !
go out and understand even if it is not aesthetically pleasing, read ebooks on your phone, learn languages that some seem to deem irrelevant, study a field people tell you is useless, take ugly notes, curse when you explain concepts back to yourself, study sitting at the kitchen table, make wonky flashcards, read things that interest you, eat takeout between study sessions, wear sneakers instead of oxfords, sweatpants when you’re sitting on the library floor, draw diagrams in cheap ballpoint pen, learn ‘imperfectly’.
it never matters like that.
would you prefer to learn French or Italian before you die?

Organising a Notebook:
I was looking at methods of keeping notebooks organised and I came across a really interesting blog post (source) that I want to share with you all. All of the pictures in this post come directly from the original blog post.
Make your entry into your notebook. In the example photographs, they have recorded a Chinese recipe.
Go to the back of the notebook and add a tag or title, e.g. “Chinese” on the left edge of the page.
Go back to the first page where the entry was, and on the same line number as you wrote “Chinese” make a black mark on the edge. You make this mark so that even when the notebook is closed, the mark is visible. After repeating this for various recipes, you now have various tags visible on the notebooks edge.
If you ever wanted to find a Chinese recipe, you simply look at the index, locate the label, and look along the visible edge which has been tagged as Chinese. Then just flick to each marked page.
You’re not limited to one tag per page. You could tag a page 2 or 3 times. So if you jot down a chicken stir fry you could tag it as “Chicken” and “Chinese”.
This could be very useful for organizing an Inspiration journal! Tag ideas for names, plots, titles, character bios, etc.!
For those who keep their grimoire or book of shadows in a notebook, this might be a useful organizational tip!

etymologeek.com shows you the origin of every word in just about any language you want. It provides a detailed description for the word with how it evolved throughout the years, along with graphs to show which words or languages it came from. As of right now, only some languages have the detailed descriptions, but the word origin graphs are available for all languages.
I found this VERY helpful when it came to memorizing French words that look and sound nothing like their English counterparts, because understanding the history helped me create a connection in my brain. I also found it really fascinating as someone who’s into linguistics, so even if you’re not necessarily looking for a way to memorize vocabulary lists, knowing the etymology of a word is pretty interesting.

Learning French on YouTube
Hey guys, here are some of my favorite channels on youtube for learning French.
Francais avec Pierre - great channel if you want to know more about grammar rules and expressions, how to sound really French and natural. He also makes videos about the DELF/DALF exams…
Comme une Française - also very good if you are confused about certain things… you can learn a lot about used expressions and words you would not find in a book
1 jour, 1 question - the main purpose of this channel is to explain things to kids, but in a fun way. It’s animated and short, but it’s great for obtaining a wide range of vocabulary, because the themes go from politics, geography and history to something like animals and food. Also might be good for learning about some history things, and interesting new facts, not just learning French.
Learn French with FrenchPod101.com - again… grammar, expressions, vocabulary channel
Cyprien - this is the only channel that is just a normal channel, not meant for learning French (but I am sure everyone knows Cyprien anyway). I just really enjoy his videos and it’s very useful for learning new words and of course for some listening practice.
.
I am sure there are many more channels like these… but I just wanted to write down my favorite ones for you guys
