peace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The message from the stars was very long and complex, but contained instructions how to decode and parse it incrementally.
There was an image, of a very cute furry creature. And a text, which loosely translated said:
"Send cat pics please!'
Language story time
context: some time ago I started to learn Kana simply for the fun of learning a different alphabet and as a way of procrastinate without loosing my sanity (althought I've wanted to seriously learn japanese for a long time but I've always found it intimidating). I dropped it and then went back to it, and well basically I went through every hiragana and just started katakana.
Okay so, not so long ago with my gf we walked past a ramen restaurant named SPECHO, and it made us laugh because it sounds like "se pécho" in french wich is slang meaning "to hook up" (the kissing kind, not the cable management kind). And so we would joke that it would be a funny place for a date and so on, but also I was wondering if it maybe meant something in japanese because why a ramen place would be called s'pécho, y'know?
SO armed with my fresh and little knowledge I went to google translate and tried to type specho and came up with すペしょ AND that's when I understood what was going on because it was translated as SPECIAL, and yeah their logo has スペショー written on it. So the place really is called ~Speciol~
I think it is really funny and cute and another example of how languages are cool, anyway~

Grammar Notebook - How To Say “What if…?” In Spanish
In Spanish if you want to say “what if” to suggest possibilities or hypotheticals, then you are going to use “y si…?”
Let’s look at some examples:
• What if Christopher Columbus never discovered America?
• Y si Cristóbal Colón nunca hubiera descubierto América?
• What if the Titanic never sunk?
• Y si el Titanic nunca se hubiera hundido?
• What if it rains today?
• Y si llueve hoy?
Note: Since we are talking about hypothetical situations then it will trigger the SUBJUNCTIVE tense. *One day I will try to make a post on the subjunctive because it is quite difficult for Spanish learners.

"So, do you have a quest," the witch asked as she finished dressing the last wound, "or doing general adventuring?"
"A quest. I seek a book."
"Ancient tome of forbidden lore?"
"No, one I read as a child."
"And this dragon didn't have it?"
"Alas."
"Have you asked a librarian?"
"They're scary!"
can i get a hell yea if you’re still gonna be wasting your time on this website in 2014
Gaidhlig and Scots become official languages in Scotland today with the Scottish Languages Act coming into force after it was voted on back in June.
Key parts of the legislation includes the right for parents to request Gaelic schools for their local area, and will help with standardisation of language teaching across the board.
Good signs for the future. In the future would be very interested to see parents (and everyone else) getting access to the same learning materials so they can learn alongside their kids.

you could make the argument that it’s foolish that everyone in the world should know what the Odyssey is but if you’re from a western country that literally has Greek history stolen away in your museum then well, really a child left behind.

i saw a post about wikipedia losing site visits to slop generators. some of us are on wikipedia like white on rice but i think it'd be fun to encourage everyone to start reading a random wikipedia article every so often. yknow, help out their metrics. learn random shit. click to get a random article!
what kind of article did you get?
a person (or a group like a band)
some sort of animal, bug, bacteria, etc (viruses can go here)
some sort of plant, fungus, whatever the fuck seaweed is,
a location
an historical event
some sort of device, contraption, vehicle, etc
a company, organization, government, etc
any type of game (board, table top, video, etc)
any type of art form (writing, music, theatre, painting, etc)
a scientific article
something that doesn't fall into any of the above categories???
and if you read it, feel free to expound in the tags on what it was about and if you learned anything!
I got an article about yuebeipotamon, "a species of potamid crab from hill streams and pools in north Guangdong, China." 🦀
websites where the internet still feels fun to me:
