8 Words to Seek and Destroy in Your Writing

This may not be what anyone wants to hear during the frenzy of NaNoWriMo, but it’s helpful to remove certain words from your writing vocabulary (with the knowledge that every rule has its exceptions). Filler words dull the impact of a powerful sentence.

1.) Suddenly

“The ceiling caved in around them with a startling crash” instead of “Suddenly, the ceiling caved in around them.”

2.) Then

“She scrambled to her feet and ran for the front door” instead of “She scrambled to her feet and then ran for the front door.”

3.) In order to

“Sarah pulled Jim out of the rubble to save him” instead of “Sarah pulled Jim out of the rubble in order to save him.”

4.) Very and Really

“Sarah was frightened” instead of “Sarah was very scared.”

5.) Is

“Jim clung to life in the hospital” instead of “Jim was clinging to life in the hospital.” (Is it just me, or is ‘clung’ a weird word?)

6.) Started

“Jim moaned from the pain of his injuries” instead of “Jim started moaning from the pain of his injuries.”

7.) That

“I was afraid I couldn’t save you,” instead of “I was afraid that I couldn’t save you.”

8.) Like

“When Jim died, Sarah’s heart shattered” instead of “When Jim died, it was like Sarah’s heart shattered.”

Acts with honor, but don’t care in the slightest for the freedoms and rights of others. Very concerned with self-benefit at times, and will twist rules and codes to favor them.

[ ] Neutral Evil 

Acts extremely selfishly with no problems concerning betraying others at a moment’s notice. They typically make allies just to further themselves.

Acts with no respect for anything except their own desires and selfish goals. They place high value on freedom for the self, but do not care for others’ freedoms. Often associated with chaos and destruction.
