Let’s just say, episode 9 changed my perspective of episode 5 and 6. It explains Ragatha’s behaviors towards Jax getting close with Pomni and she said “Jax is corrupting her”. I thought corrupting meant Pomni changing for bad, not literally
So she has been trying to protect her, to not let the history repeat
no because if you had to create a system in order to survive i feel like youre basically doing the same as traumagenic systems
even if it wasnt to survive a traumatic situation your system still aids you with day to day tasks no matter how small and that still counts as survival
i really cant understand why endogenic systems are so frowned upon
Hello plural community! We'd like to ramble to you all today about this blogpost by Comfy Sleepy.
We will be quoting the post with indented text and giving our thoughts in regular text. We highly recommend reading it for yourself, but if you can't sit through a very long plural essay, this might be more digestible!
Enjoy!
"There is this theory in psychology known as the Theory of Narrative Thought, which is the idea that consciousness is a story that the brain is telling to itself, in order to make sense of the world around it. Human brains run on stories, and our ability to perform storytelling is one of the things that set us apart from most of the other animals on this planet. It is the basis of how we form culture, but it’s also the basis of how we learn and how we *think.* The brain does not simply intake a raw stream of data and programatically compute it into an output the way, say, a worm might respond predictably to the stimulus of a raindrop falling on its head. It takes this data and interprets it, forms links to other information it’s taken in, and weaves that information into causes and effects, into patterns, into chains of events and predictions of where those chains may go based on archetypes and tropes it’s experienced in the past and that it’s picked up from cultural exchange.
Plurality, too, is a form of story the brain is telling itself."
I'd like to clarify that the last line I'm quoting does NOT mean to say that plurality is fake in the way stories typically are. It's the opposite, actually! Comfy is trying to convey that the way the brain interprets information is by telling itself things. In this analogy, it's telling itself stories to make sense of the world.
Now, I know that might sound confusing. Let me explain!
"Stories" in this context is less about how real something is, and more about how it's perceived and digested by one's brain. For example, news articles are stories. Propaganda posters are stories. Art pieces are stories. And so on! Please don't be put off by the phrasing as Comfy continues, because the point is not about the authenticity of stories, but rather how they affect people.
Moving along, then!
"A lot of people out there really want to convince you that plurality is a horror story. We all live in the shadow of Jekyll and Hyde and the idea of the “evil axe murderer alter ego” and we always have to explain to our loved ones to whom we are brave enough to Come Out To that that’s not what’s fucking happening, first and foremost. But even amongst our peers, amongst our fellow plurals in plural-centric spaces, more people than you realize want to convince you that plurality is a horror story. And if the things that happen in our brain are our brain telling a story to itself… If the brain tells itself that the things its experiencing are supposed to be a horror story, what purpose does it have to disbelieve something its telling itself?"
"When the brain tells itself its own expectations on how it should be acting, when the brain tells itself the things its experiencing are supposed to be a horror story, what purpose does it have to disbelieve itself? To speak of monsters haunting the edge of your mind is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Your mind and your rules after all, as LB Lee says. Is this not giving your Monster exactly the power you’re trying to withhold from it?"
This is by far my favorite part of the essay. It points out a huge problem with the plural community that I and many others have seen time and time again. People in the plural community, whether it be on Tumblr, Discord, or anywhere else-- consider plurality to be an experience that inherently makes those experiencing it suffer. It is, like Comfy said, a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Many pluralfolk base their plurality around the issues it's causing. Their amnesia, their dissociation, their in-fighting, their barriers, their headspace, or what have you. Note that most of these things are exclusive to disordered experiences-- because the plural community in present day is very CDD-centric. Even in pro-endo spaces! I see it all the damn time. People complaining about their plurality and wallowing in self-pity without actually doing anything about it, all because they believe they need to suffer to be plural. That they need to be a living horror story.
Not to say that plurality doesn't come with some struggles. After all, you have other people in your brain and body, that's obviously going to cause conflict every now and then. But my point is: if you believe that you're meant to be unhappy, that you're supposed to be hurting and clawing your way out of a hole... Then you will.
All of this is about perspective, interpretation, and most importantly, self-talk. The "stories your brain tells itself" shape your reality and identity. If you can manage to break the cycle and replace negative self-talk with positive self-talk, you will eventually see a difference. It takes time to break the mold you and an entire community created, but it is possible, I can tell you that much. I know because we did it, and are still doing it now.
"Learned self-helplessness. Internalization of disempowerment. Complicity with your marginalization. Normalization of suffering. These are the real things that spread through language and through thought and burrow into your mind like a worm. And we know these are the Real Mind Viruses because they’re not just exclusive to the plural experience – These are the things all marginalized people battle with – Queer and Trans people, POC people, disabled people, name anything on the list and I can point you to examples – and these are the things that are often weaponized against marginalized people in order to keep them Down. The enemies of the poor do love when the poor play PvP with themselves instead of with the rich. And these are often weapons designed to get you to blame yourself for the way they hurt you, and think they originate from yourself, and think that they are irremovable from the wounds they cause. And get you to spread them to your friends, so they don’t realize where it all Actually comes from. We all live in Jekyll and Hyde’s shadow, and so too do we all live in the shadow of Sybil, baby."
In my humble opinion, the source of the problem is the medical field. Now, hold on-- I'm not discrediting all medicine or achievements made with it. But I think (or at least hope) that everyone knows about the medical field's inherent bias. Sexism in the medical field is especially common, as seen with things like neurodivergency, where those with typical male organs and hormones are studied and prioritized more often than those with typical female organs and hormones.
If you've ever read a medical paper on DID, or even papers from back when it was called MPD, you might have read some questionable things. This is because it is (or-- was) incredibly easy to get medical studies published-- and even easier to insert bias, discrimination, and even just straight up bigotry or incorrect facts into it. And doctors who study CDDs often claim to be fascinated by the condition. They treat their patients like spectacles to be picked apart and cured, because that's what the medical field is about. Curing disease.
But plurality isn't a disease. It isn't a problem, either. There are issues that can come with it, sure, but those are almost always related to something else, or just interpersonal issues between headmates-- which again can be tied to different things.
Plurality is a state of being: the state of being more than one. Again, not a disease. But wow do doctors love to treat it like it is! Final fusion is still the primary treatment for CDDs, and functional multiplicity has its numerous amounts of flaws in the medical context. Plurality is continuously treated as something to study and then kill. It's saneism all over again.
All of this to say: the plural community needs to open its eyes and stop giving in to the oppressors. The medical field wants pluralfolk to think they have a disease. They want them to believe they can be cured, that they can be fixed, and then everything will be sunshine and rainbows. That right there is a false promise.
We're not necessarily against the medical field in its entirely, for clarification. Some amazing things have been done with advancements in that department. But god is it a flawed system full of hatred and lies. Anyone who's faced medical malpractice would know, I'm sure!
So, this is your wake-up call. Please stop using negative self-talk about your plurality. Focus on the good in your experience and work towards a better future! Expectations shape reality, as they say, and it feels like everyone's expectations are that they need to suffer and feel depressed for as long as they're plural.
I'm not saying that your problems will vanish if you use positive self-talk, but I can guarantee that it will at least make a difference.
Let me tell a quick story:
Back in 2023, our hopeverse was chaotic and unstable. One of our gatekeepers had recently grown fed up with everyone. Their solution was to bomb our headspace with meteors over and over again to get out their frustration, and it seemed like no one could stop them because of how much power they had.
Shortly after this event, the entire layer this took place on collapsed. Maybe of our spiralmates went dormant that day, and we were left with nothing but a dark void.
Why did this happen? Our expectations shaped our reality, and our brain told itself a story where that gatekeeper was unstoppable. If we had the internal structure that we do now back then, they wouldn't have had a chance to start anything at all.
How come? I'm glad you asked. Our current hopeverse functions off of a simple principle: we're all equal. Some of us take the helm when it comes to certain internal tasks, sure, but at the end of the day, no one is all-powerful. This only works for us because expectations shape reality.
We actually got this idea from TADC-- but that's a ramble for another day.
Anyway, if we had that way of thinking in 2023 when that event occurred, nothing would have happened-- besides maybe a collaborative discussion or something along those lines.
The point I'm trying to make is that everything you think and believe will influence your plurality. From roles to switching to headspace, all of it is affected by what ideas you consume. And I don't just mean in the formation way. You still have time to reshape your brain's beliefs and create a better future for yourself! In fact, I'd say you have your whole life to do so, if you so wish.
That's the end of my little ramble about Comfy Sleepy's essay. Again, I highly recommend reading it for yourself! She's incredibly smart and well-informed about the plural experience.
if you’re a little or middle, you still deserve a voice. you deserve to be treated how you want to be treated, without people defaulting to babying you without your consent. you are capable, you are loved, and you are an important part of your collective and the plural community as a whole. I’m sorry if anyone has ever diminished your impact.
A headmate pack in which the headmate is better at tolerating heat in comparison to other members within their own system. They tend to know how to take care of the shared body during the heat, but that is not inherent to the role.
This term has no DNI, anyone can use this and/or take inspiration for their own terms. Anyone can make a flag for this. We consent to this term being uploaded to pluralpedia.
people always describe the system experience as either the host makes all the decisions with input from their headmates, or the headmates vote and come to a collective decision, but what i experience is more closer to a dictatorship where whoever’s fronting at the moment does whatever the fuck they want until they leave and then it repeats with the next fronter and the one after that too.
HI MOOTIE!!!! Just had a quick question.. Is it okay to dm you? (^_^;) If not that's okay!!! We were just thinking about trying to interact with our moots sum more.. :p
