The S-Classes that I Raised often gets grouped with Omniscent Reader's Viewpoint and Trash of the Count's Family, but there's something distinctly different about Han Yoojin as a protagonist. I think it's that his story really makes you feel how much of a fighter he is. I'm not saying that Kim Dokja and Kim Roksoo aren't fighters exactly, but they tend to come off as schemers first and foremost. Their approach to most problems (from my perspective as someone who's read all of ORV and like a third of TCF) involves leveraging secrets of the world that only they know in order to get the better of their adversaries and achieve their goals. They plan things out a long time in advance, and sure, things don't always go their way, but they feel like chess players when they're confronted with obstacles.
Meanwhile, Han Yoojin feels like a guerilla soldier. He definitely also schemes, but SCTIR makes a dedicated effort to showing that his current knowledge of the future and the world's secrets will only take him so far. He does think ahead and plans for the future whenever he can, but most of his problems are solved by improvising. One of his greatest strengths is that he thinks on his feet and doesn't let himself be fazed by surprises. This ends up making him feel more like someone who has always had to fight desperately for every last scrap of respect and survival he could get his hands on in a way that ORV and TCF don't go for as much (as far as I can tell for TCF as of now). Kim Dokja and Kim Roksoo's plans go "first, I'm going to go to the super secret location to get a weapon that will help me in six months, and then in five weeks, I'm going to recruit an obscure powerhouse to be my spy for the operation I'll do next year..." whereas Han Yoojin's plans are more like "first, I'll get into some shit, and then, I'll figure it out."
It's kind of hard to explain the vibe difference because these characters are all defined by their cleverness, but I guess the best way to put it would be that Kim Dokja and Kim Roksoo seem more... exasperated? with the way they've been wronged in the past, whereas Han Yoojin seems more angry and spiteful about it. The first two mostly seem tired of dealing with the way their lives were going before and just want to be happy, but Han Yoojin gives off the feeling that he doesn't think he can find happiness without biting and clawing his way to it
Yeah- Han Yoojin feels significantly more feral compared to the other two. And honestly, it's probably because compared to Kim Dokja and Kim Rok Soo who've struggled to survive on their own and essentially gave up on themselves, Han Yoojin has always survived for someone else.
Yoojin has always fought for his own survival, but he was also responsible for his brother's survival ever since he was a small child. As a result, Han Yoojin is so much more upfront about his love and so the sheer anger and drive that he has to keep it comes across significantly stronger because he has spent his entire life fighting every sudden turn that threatens it. So- he gets angry at the world and everything because when he's on the brink he can't give up since it would be the same as giving up on loving others. That added responsibility of another life on top of his own is so heavily ingrained in his nature- that he lashes out without a second thought at any threat.
Another thing is that Han Yoojin also feels weaker compared to the other two- like, we know that KRS is technically weak too but his AP are strong and he feels like someone you can't ever catch off guard. HYJ's main skills from the system are almost purely support, and yet, he somehow survived the hellhole that is the hunter world for five years. He's had to get himself out of the shittiest situations and evaded death for so long- it's no surprise that it feels like he's running on pure spite.
That's so well said! In Omniscient Reader, Kim Dokja has always been a schemer, a gambler of sorts capable of analysing a situation without emotions clouding his judgement (thanks to the forth wall). There is always plan, a way out of an disadvantageous situation, as Dokja dedicated a good part of his life reading a webnovel, since said webnovel saved him. Information and tactics are not scarce, and if push comes to shove, he will put his life on the line that will get him and the group to their objectives. Dokja can see the light at the end of the tunnel, he has planned beforehand how to make his companions reach it. The one thing he doesn't plan is if he too will make it, as he is just another expendable card, a stepping stone for others to use.
Cale is a strategy genius, he will have as many hidden cards as he can store. And some are former enemies that came to respect him, or allies coming from unexpected places. By being himself, Cale has made the world his ally, that even if the fight takes a sharp turn, there will be a way out. If he uses himself as a weapon, his companions - his family - will gather all their energy to end the battle as soon as possible.
Dokja and Cale look at their past and numb any pain that comes from it. They see it almost as something insignificant, a point in their lives that they struggled, but doesn't affect them anymore. It is as lycoric3 said, Kim Dokja and Kim Rok Soo were surviving on their own, and as they held themselver in low regard, what happened to them is not important. They gave up on themselves.
Yoojin, however, never gave up on the past. From the very beggining he is fighting tooth and nail for the bare minimum, demanding life to be kinder - not to him, but to those he lives for. He has plans, but they are not a step by step on how to defeat the enemy, they are contingency plans since he knows things never go accordingly. And for that, he is angry. Yoojin's hidden card is not one of his hidden skills, it is his sheer desesperation to pull through.
Animatic for chapter 277 of The S Classes that I Raised novel!
Been wanting to do this for quite some time! Basically 4 minutes of Yoojin suffering....
CW: panic attack, blood, alcohol
For extra Pain Flavor this is the song lyrics that OP chose:
Eu vou deixar ela ir embora Chegou a hora Chegou a hora
Eu não vou mais me fechar pra sempre Daqui pra frente Daqui pra frente
O que começa terá seu final E isso é normal Isso é normal
A dor do fim vem pra purificar Recomeçar Recomeçar
and the translation:
I will let her go It is time It is time
I will not close myself forever Henceforth Henceforth
What begins will have its end And it is normal It is normal
The pain of the end will purify Restart Restart
HI thank you for writing the translation of this song! It's called "Recomeçar" by Tim Bernardes. In English, it means "Start Over"

Been wanting to do this for quite some time! Basically 4 minutes of Yoojin suffering....

You know what's so bitter about Yoohyun leaving Yoojin in order to protect him? The fact that he never really understood the social implications of it.
We know that Han Yoohyun doesn't care for social cues, laws and regulations, all mannerisms and behaviour towards people are done simply to please his brother. And so- he doesn't realise that by denouncing Yoojin, as a highly praised and popular S-class, he has condemned him in society. Yoohyun leaves as soon as he can, publicly announces that he's a burden, and the media is having a field day where Yoojin is made a villain.
Unfortunately, it's only made worse by Yoojin's lost desperation to find out why his brother, his child, who he has raised all his life has left him behind. Has spit in his face and is so cold, and that maybe Yoojin has failed him all this time. His desperation in trying to get to talk to Yoohyun at least once, to give him a birthday cake, to awaken so that maybe he can reach him. It only ends up adding to this manic, ungrateful and spiteful image that the world views him as.
Yoojin is condemned by society. Yoohyun gets mad that he's a hunter but Yoojin has no other option. He can't get a regular job because his reputation has been dragged through the mud and because the constant public attention is too burdensome for any employers. Seok Simyeong has constantly berated Yoojin, fucking up his mental state and as the 'spokesperson' of Yoohyun, Yoojin must think its true.
Yoohyun tries to protect him from hunters through this instinctual thought of predators and prey, but society is far too nuanced and he doesn't understand. By trying to leave him out of the dungeons, he left him to the world.
Oh Han Yoohyun, you've doomed him.
YES EXACTLY! Yoohyun operates based on primal instincts of protection, keeping Yoojin away from dangers that could threaten his life. However, Yoohyun does not consider what kind of life Yoojin would be living under this 'protection'. It is understandable, since Yoohyun is not exactly human and has only learned to live in society based on his hyung teachings. But there was no worse way to protect Yoojin than this. By denouncing all the love and time Yoojin took to raise Yoohyun, the two are left with nothing on their lives.
What makes them doomed is how the two view protection. For Yoohyun, it's locking Yoojin away from anything that Yoohyun can't control, like keeping a fragile animal on a cage. For Yoojin, it is using any means (including his own health) to maintain what he believes is best for Yoohyun (dating, making friends, getting into a good college). The two are not speaking the same language, but the love is still there. That's what makes their separation sting so much.
The Han brothers give up everything for the sake of the other, not knowing it hurts the other by doing so. And society takes full advantage of that.
Since the beggining, there was no way they would escape Diarma's attack with both alive.
SPOILERS FOR SCTIR FOR +CH 200
CW: (possibly) Eating disorder ED, depression
Something that keeps me awake at night: at the beggining of the story, Yoohyun's death isn't so painful for the viewers, because we only see what is on the surface of the Han brothers' life. It's through memories and flashbacks that we get to learn 3 facts: Yoojin dedicated his entire life to Yoohyun, they parted ways and in the end they reunited, only for one of them die. That's the introduction of SCTIR for us. Moreover, Yoojin is desesperate to leave the past behind, so he doesn't linger on his traumatic memories for too long, hence why the pain of reading SCTIR isn't instant.
It is gradual.
Yoojin and we learn that the past was never erased. It still happened, and exists in the form of Yoohyun's body out in the cold. Gradually, it becomes more apparent how Yoojin is still so affected by his previous life, despite his fear resistance skill. It starts with small things like him avoiding eating unless someone tells him to do so, always occupying himself with tasks that could be handled by someone else, negative thoughts about himself for every single action he takes and so on. I love, with all my heart, the manhwa, but the novel makes it so much more apparent how Yoojin loathes himself, to the point he keeps wishing he wasn't a human being, rather an item for his brother to use. It's so messed up to want to abandon all your humanity, feelings and concept of self just so you can be of help.
SCTIR is fun to read, but even more so with the unreliable narrator that is Yoojin. He sees what he does as nothing impressive, considering the people he is surrounded with, despite running the kisengsu facility, negotiating with the hair loss company to develop a new product, managing Seok Hayan's research team, mantaining diplomatic ties with Japan, training and helping other hunters and, most importantly, caring for all the S classes. He worries for their well-being because it's only natural for him to do so, as the Perfect Caregiver.
And, in the middle of it all, the only thing Yoojin spares for himself is hate. He doesn't want to live long for himself, but rather for Yoohyun, even though Yoojin already has been through the pain of loss. When Yoojin died in chapter 241, the first thing that he thought was Yoohyun. He didn't even think about how much it hurted dying (with a freaking shot on the head)! He just wanted to reunite and soothe Yoohyun that he was okay.
Speaking of which, in Sigma's arc, as Yoojin was alone, he really stopped caring for his well-being, so Sung Hyunjae took that role and did everything he could to help Yoojin. But, for him to even have to create a quest just so Yoojin could eat is what sparked my lizard brain to write this post.
My point is, there isn't an arc dedicated for recovery (at least until the chapter I have read that is like, ~300) and that is beautiful, because Yoojin is still processing what he went through, and we get to see that. Yoojin has such an interesting character arc as he begins wanting to forget the past, as it is too painful, to start running after it. He can't let go of it, because letting it go means letting his little brother go too. Which is why he says he will never be okay again in chapter 278.
